MzMia -> Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 7:23:07 PM)

Yes, another MzMia gas price thread.
It is my lot in life to start gas price threads, probably forever.

Gas prices in my area are averaging about $3.69 or so.
I am fairly certain it will be $4.00 by Memorial Day.
How much is gas in your area?
Has anyone considered riding a bicycle or moped to work?
I just read that mopeds average over 90 miles per gallon of gas, I think the sales and
prices of mopeds will go up.
I only work 15 minutes from work and I don't have to get on any major highways, so a moped would be doable when things get worse.

How much have you cut down on driving?

i'm not sure what the exact prices are today, but yes i'm trying to run all my errands at once and cut back on driving.  work just moved about 20 miles further away and that isnt' helping either.

The school I attend is probably about 12 miles away. (HM says) and that is over highway roads most of the way. There is no way I could do that.

lol, christine...

Thanks for the chuckle about the rolling pin..

Gas prices here went down to about $3.50 today. As i spent the last 2 years working 40 hours a week and going to nursing school (on average, i drove about 300-400 miles a week), i bought a motorcycle. At 60-70 mpg, it REALLY saved on gas. That being said, living in Michigan presents lots of weather challenges for a motorcycle... lol And, as i wrecked it 2 weeks ago, i'm waiting to get it back from the repair shop. But, with gas prices looking to go back up, i need to use it as often as possible. Especially as the new job is 35 miles away (the old one was 11 miles). i don't know about the moped thing but my lil Buell Blast is fantastic!

Be careful riding your Buell Blast, but it sounds like a lot of fun.
I think I am a tad too old for a moped, maybe a small motorcycle is something
I need to think about.
Does it have room on it for bags and packages?
Could I ride it to the grocery store and carry bags on it?

Quivver -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 8:09:08 PM)

With 50+ miles one way so I can keep my rural and emotional status about all I can do is reduce days.
Thank God this is my slow time of year, but then again by Labor Day who know's what it might be.
Right now it's 15.00 a day round trip.  Then again it's my choice to drive a truck.

Hummm, maybe a lil Harley is in my future.  [sm=flash.gif]

Not changing my life really. Though I have noticed one thing....

Seems to me the gas price 'crisis' just might do the one thing that the government refused to do.

Yeah, i'm usually SUPER careful but i totally zoned out and wasn't paying attention... i'm sure i'll never make that mistake again. i'm just glad i basically walked away (ok, so i limped away:)
i love my Blast - but i'm not totally sure they even make that model anymore. It's made by Harley but i think they phased the Blast out for different models. i checked this website http://www.buell.com/en_us/home.asp and the Blast is still there. But i have a medium set of saddlebags (i carried school books, lunch, etc. in them). They're not big enough to go full-out grocery shopping - but you can fit a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread :)
Good luck if you decide to ride... i LOVE it!! (yes, even after a decent crash:)

***edited cuz i misspoke the first time around***

petdave -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 8:47:32 PM)

Hell, i started changing my behavior when gas hit $2/gallon...

You can get motorcycle saddlebags and trunks in pretty large sizes... i've carried a variety of stupid things on my bike (a five-foot-long plushie shark, for example), and regularly pick up groceries with it.

apiercedkitty -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 8:51:06 PM)

The Blast is quite a bit smaller than most bikes - so the bags that are made for it are the biggest i would want to use as i wouldn't want them hanging down where they might get snagged on the back wheel - but that's just my preference.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 9:31:07 PM)

I have a brother who now buys tobaco and paper to make ciggarets rather than buying packs.

So is the price of gas changing my life? No, but the price of Baby Formula has.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 9:35:17 PM)

I am not worried about gasoline prices at all. The price of oil at close to $120.00 a barrel is a bubble that is beyond false and it will soon pop. Even in the worst case scenario, crude oil should be between $55 and $60 a barrel and that is with a weak dollar. The $120 price is poor speculation. gasoline prices will be back around $2.00 buy January 2009. Of course for some reason this will drive the democrat party and many leftists insane but what can you do???

Nope, my driving habits are not changing. It is my American right to drive anywhere I well please and I will.

Now maybe the dems and the lefties should get real and start supporting nuke technology if they are so freaking worried about oil.

I agree. And once we have it, I also support phasing out and banning internal combustion engines. Except for military uses and airlines. Make everything else electric.

Real_Trouble -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 9:53:59 PM)

Man, how much do you people drive?

I have a car that gets roughly 30 mpg, and put roughly 12k on it per year.

That's 400 gallons of gas per year, at $1,400 in spending if gas is $3.50.

Even if gas goes up to $5 a gallon, that's only an extra $600 per year.  This is not a big issue compared to how it's going to take a bit out of shipping, air travel, and trucking.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 10:02:20 PM)

I drive on average 25,000 miles a year.

There is plenty of oil, it's not running out in 100 generations.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 10:04:31 PM)

Yes, great post.  Have you guys been paying attention to prices in grocery stores lately?  They've really gone up.

They have been coming down for several weeks now and when gas gets back to reasonable market prices after the crude bubble pops the will go down furthur

Lordandmaster -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 10:18:23 PM)

We'll see, but I don't think the price of groceries is coming down anytime soon.  There's no economic reason to anticipate that.

But everyone's an expert.

Leatherist -> RE: Is the price of gas changing your life yet? (5/4/2008 10:23:39 PM)

Prices tend to stay up once they go up. I'm starting a garden.
