This story reminds me of a battle of my own. When I got my driver's license in Florida I had to fight to get the license issued in first-initial-middle-name. It seems that the Florida DMV does not believe in women using their middle names. But, because they could not produce a written rule, law, or policy to substantiate the claim, I got my license the way I wanted - the way that matches my SS card, checking account, and credit cards.

And then there are those entities who don't want anyone to use their middle names - those applications (including the I-9 form, BTW) that ask for first name and middle initial.

What bureaucratic idiocy have you run into regarding using your name the way you and/or your parents want it to be used?

pip, never liked my first name, dropped it in high school

None so far. Then again I've never cared much for my name in general. So no need to use the first or middle.
It's all the same to me..so whatever people want they get.
It isn't worth the time nor effort to me to change it all.

See everyone I knew just got thier Names Reversed Legally and fixed the whole issue.

My UM has a Strange First name and a Common Middle Name if he hates his name when he turns 18 he can pay to have it legally changed however I will still call him by the name I gave him.

personal issues/marriage/divorce can be a reason for a name change.

all my id's have my first, middle and last name.

of which i just changed from my birth name although i kept my original last name.

I've always gone by my middle name. So did my mom and grandmother. So does my husband and son. We try to make things confusing whenever possible.

I'll be honest and say I've gotten a lot of grief for it, though. At the bank, on taxes, at work, whenever someone goes to match my debit card to my driver's license. Blegh.

I've had my name legally changed to one of my middle names when i was young, after a nervous breakdown in school.

I was looking forward to my first standardized test, which would decide what kind of classes i could go into the next year in Jr. High. Being relatively intelligent and exceptional in academics, i studied for months on just about every possible subject that was given in the study guides i bought. Needless to say, i put alot of pressure on myself for this upcoming test.

Here's where the problem came in. My full name at birth was loaded. Here are the initials NSOFDS with the added IV or NSOFDSIV, meaning 3 previous generations of men in my family suffered with this heavy name.

So, i have my no. 2 pencils and had a good breakfast and even managed to sleep the night before. The proctor tells us to fill in the little gridboxes at the top of our answer sheet.

Ok, last name first. It has 9 spaces to fill in, which is perfect because my last name has 9 letters. Ok

No room for the title, but i was told not to expect that; the same with all the Junior's in my small town elementary school.

First name next. It also has 9 spaces, they must have known i was coming; my first name also has 9 letters. Great.

Things are smooth, nothing could go wrong.

M.I. or Middle Initials and it gives me 2 spaces. Perfect, once again i happen to have two *brain crashed somewhere about here* Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!! I have 4 middle names!!! How do i decide?!?! I now know that i could have just used the first two and been ok, but i was a 12 year old boy thinking his whole academic future was riding on this one test; and there was plenty of pressure on me, most of which i placed there myself. I just plain got STUCK at this point and, as i was told later, went catatonic for the next 9 hours and was relatively unresponsive for the next few days.

So i ended up dropping my first two names (and thus the title of The Fourth), changing my name from NSOFDSIV to OFDS; and life has been much simpler since. Also, i've never had an issue with having all of my legal names fully spelled out on a license or identification card.

ps: On retaking the test, i aced it and scored within the top 1 percentile.

I didn't have any problems till I got married. This is crazy but I'll tell ya. I wanted a hyphenated name because an old wives tale is that when you take on someone else's family name be prepared to take on their family problems. If you have ever studied names and meanings and first versus last you have seen this before. My thinking was, and BTW using the same wisdom with which I decided to get married, I shall have a hyphen because I know my own family and I can keep your dysfunctions a hyphen away. I was surprised when I found out that I actually had to put in the divorce that I wanted my own name back. Otherwise, I would have to go to court again to ask for my own name back. Then I had to go to the SS office to prove that the court allowed me to have my own name back.

I love my first name and would never think of not using it. I was named after my dad. It's unusual enough that it's not heard everyday, but not so unique that people don't know how to say it.

Everything has my first, middle and married surname.When I got divorced I was soooo ready to drop his last name and go back to the one I grew up with until I found out I had to contact the State Police and get fingerprinted so that I could take back the maiden name. I have not, nor will I be fingerprinted.That means I'm stuck with a weird Dutch surname instead of my own weird unknown heritage surname!Dammit. When I decided recently to use my middle as first name I just began to sign everything 'first name initial then full middle name'.Example, M Jane Smith instead of Mary J Smith.Now my bank checks all have M Jane Smith which makes me happy, cept for that last name crap (which of course is not Smith.. I would love to be a 'Smith'!!)

I had had an account left over in my maiden name. Had them change it to match my soc sec card; first, maiden, married. That's what all the accounts now say. Except the IRS refused to accept this. They asked for a new soc sec card to be issued. Soc sec said they weren't issuing a name changed card with no name change. Took two years to figure out what form they wanted filled out. For no reason at all it turned out to be a W-9 which is what independent contractors file. WTF?

Anyway because they've been holding money all this time, now they have to give it back with lots of interest.

Oh yeah and during all this, I accidentally signed a tax form without the maiden name and they sent me some snotty letter demanding a reason for this error. I told them "senior moment".

i plan on changing my name. i LOATHE my given name. i dont care for my middle name that much either. i'm gonna have to learn to spell TheEngineer's last name....its unique enough that he may be the last person in the US with that last name.

he knows i want to change my name, too. fun fun fun.
