Lawrence, had no sex in it at all that i could see. Picked up some interesting ideas from "Valley of the Dolls" by Jacqueline Susann. LOL.

i do hope that you got a bit more out of the books that you read other than the sex scenes. d.h. lawrence had much to share in his books, and while ayn rand is overly capitalistic, she did tell her ideas very thoroughly. shakespeare can be quite amusing as well as enlightening; perhaps you might give him another try.

as to the power of the book at the time, in february 1955, "Histoire d'O" won the literary prize Prix des Deux Magots. it was also published simultaneously in french and american (the latter with many translations errors due to the rushed publication). so while one book may not be your book, it was considered important in the literary world. it has also never been out of print in over 50 years, sellling millions of copies.

yes, it was written as a sort of scherizade like continuation of writing to ensure the longevity of her affair with a man who had expressed an affinity for marquis de sade. she denied writing it until she was near death. the author was Dominique Aury.

Look harder

It caused quite a stir when it first came out, but by today's standards I'll agree it's very mild. Harlequin romances are practically anatomy-textbook explicit by comparison.

LCL wasn't Lawrence's *best* work in my opinion ("Sons and Lovers" was much more 'typical' of him, as well as his short stories), but I'm still fond of it. My only disappointment was that Connie and Mellors didn't get the clean-cut happy ending; I finished the book feeling sorry for them, rather than satisfied. I've always heard that Lawrence only wrote the book because he was dying of tuberculosis and needed the money, but I don't know if there's truth to that.

Not to hijack this thread, but i have loved Anais Nin's erotica for many years.....anyone else read it? The story is, she was in Paris with Hemingway et al and needed money; and was paid something like $25 a story. She's best known for her Diaries but her erotica was my 1st taste of the "forbidden".

Anaïs Nin. Yes, yes, yes! I loved "Delta of Venus," and "Little Birds" (I think that was her) was good too. I had copies of both when I was in college, but they and my textbooks went the way of the used-book store afterward because I was poor after four years at a private school...

I want to say that there was an essay or preface or something in one of the copies I had that stated she got paid a dollar a page? Something like that. It made me think that for that rate, since magazines usually pay cents-per-word, I'd write smut too.

I liked the movie OK, as the women were very attractive (isn't that a real plus?). Also, the bdsm was nice to watch.

What I didn't like was the fact that O was not a consensual slave; she seemed to be 'broken' so her lover could make her into a slave.

On another note, I enjoyed parts of 'Exit to Eden'. Being a male slave, I enjoyed the parts where the male slave is stripped, whipped, and paraded nude before female owners. I also enjoyed the parts where the slave was punished.

I'll stop before I get too aroused...

I never saw the movie version but I heard it was horrible, made into a comedy?

I thought Exit to Eden the book was a ridiculous amount of romanticized fluff (yet another tale of a woman being a dominant because that's the only way she can relate to a male when she really just wants to be loved for who she is).

The movie I thought WAS very funny and the kink aspect to it was just part of the amusement. It added a quirky sensuality and fantasy aspect. As long as you don't try and make bdsm into something that always has to be serious and "hard core" then I think you will like it.

I read the story of O years ago and I was so unimpressed at the time I couldn't begin to tell you wehat the story was about. However with the light of additional years and experience in kinky and other liofe areas I'm going to read it again and see if it makes sence to me now.

I must admit LuckyAlbatross is correct. However, certain parts of the book are quite erotic, and I enjoyed reading those parts. Anne Rice is certainly a fine writer in many ways.

I might try to find the movie and see if it is as funny as you say.

The same here, I didn't find it that impressive. I actually enjoyed a novel I read about pony girl training more. I should find my hard cover "Story of O" and give it another read though. Perhaps I'll change my mind. I think it's sitting in my closet somewhere.

i thoroughly enjoyed Memoirs of Geisha and Raise the Red Lantern (book and film). i found it very difficult to sit through the of The Secretary but i know many are way into this movie. Quills had some merit but alot can also be said for the message in Last Tango in Paris.

What are thoughts from others about favorite books or movies?
