Pet owners typically fall into one of two categories. Dog people or cat people.

Dogs are loyal, loving companions but at a price. Dogs are high maintenance. They need to be bathed, walked, and they require constant attention and discipline. They will come when called and sit at your feet, waiting to be petted. They will take a lot of abuse and mistreatment and still keep coming back, always looking at you with those big puppy dog eyes, begging for love.

Cats are affectionate but on their own terms. They are the low maintenance pet. They don't need bathing, or walking. They rarely come when called (unless its accompanied by the sound of their food container being rattled). They won't tolerate as much abuse, and become wary if mistreated. A content cat, however, will come to settle on your lap after a day of adventures, rewarding your attention with a hearty purr.

Despite their fundamental differences, the one thing that cats and dogs do have in common is that they both require loving owners to be happy.

I wonder, are most Dominants dog people?  Are most submissives dog type personalities, that is if they were to be likened to an animal in their traits would they identify closest with a dog... loyal, dependable, trusting, always desiring to please?

I think about my cat, currently wandering across my lap, rubbing against me, trying to gain my attention, purring loudly. For a cat he is quite placid, and will tolerate being picked up and carried around for the most part, but if he really does not want to be petted he will get out the claws and protest till I put him down.

Is it possible for a cat type personality, independant, self reliant, and fussy about when they get attention... can these type of personalities successfully be submissives?

Strange...

My cat comes when called. Cats do very well with bathing. She seems to require much attention given the head-bumpings I receive.

I am a male Dom and a cat owner. I like pets that deliver both for me and themselves. Some autonomy is highly desirable as I haven't the time nor the inclination to micromanage everything someone else is doing.

But when I say jump, I expect to see some jumping. If I don't get what I want when I want it, there had better be some fucking amazingly charming reason why not.

Hope that helps...

i have cat-like traits.

i'm fussy because i have the right to choose the best of the best for me ...i'm self-reliant and independent ...i tend to bestow my affections on those who deserve it ...dare to abuse me and i shall fight back with claws. however, i'm definitely not low maintenance. though it takes Daddy very little to maintain this black pussy, He certainly knows how to keep her purring for more.

Well Master is usually a cat person, but he has a dog now that is great.  I have some cat and dog like traits Master knows how to make me purr and i do like a lot of attention.  Try to abuse me however i will become a wildcat fighting back with teeth and claws.

Even though this was not asked i would have to say i am a dog person.

I am Dominant and I have dogs....and a cat. My submissive has two cats. I like both animals, well I like most animals actually. But I am more inclined to like dogs better, whereas my sub is a true cat person. Oh he likes dogs well enough, he'd just rather be around cats.

Is he a  good submissive? Yes he is but he doesn't have a cat like personality. He enjoys pleasing, being given instruction and following those instructions very well, something most cats don't enjoy. He doesn't like making decisions at all.

I on the other hand have no desire to take instruction, I like making the decisions and feel that I do it quite well. I like leading the relationship and am very independent.

So no I don't think your pet choice mirrors your own personality, I think its just a preference.

My Sir is a dog person and I'm a cat person. If I was into being a pet I would definitely be a cat.....a very spoiled cat.

I doubt that they are any more so than any given sample of a population.

From reading the replies I guess I wasnt as clear as I had hoped I would be.

I wasnt asking whether a dog lover is more likely to be a submissive, or a cat person more likely to be a dominant, or whether pet preference had any bearing whatsoever on your dominance or submissive nature.  Despite the title this has nothing to do with real life pets and your choices or preferences.  It was merely an analogy, a way to make a comparison that most people will understand, between the different personalities between cats and dogs, and our enjoyment of ownership of them.  Now try to apply that analogy to the ownership a dominant has of their submissive.

It seems to me that the ideal submissive is a "dog".  Pleasing, loyal, loving, affectionate, easy to train and discipline.

Sugarmycharro, have you taught your cat to jump yet? ;)

Do you see the point there?  Cat's will for the most part do as they please.  They are entirely different to dogs, entirely, but we can gain pleasure from owning both.

So if people had to be likened in their personality to either a cat or a dog, could someone who is much like a cat, be a "good" submissive?

LW, this is a favorite joke of mine, which i think does a very good job of describing what you are trying to say.

You know the difference between dogs and cats?

With a dog, you feed them, water them, brush them, take them outside, take them for walks, take them to the park, take them to the vet-
And the dog looks at you and says, 'Obviously, this person is a GOD!'

With a cat, you feed it, water it, brush it, clean it's litter box, take it to the vet -
The cat looks at you and says, 'Obviously, I am a God.'

I'm a total cat person. My cats love me. I have stories that would make any pet lover tear up to prove it. And, EVERY time I come in the door, Lucky (my BIG 20 lb boy) is ALWAYS at the door to greet me. Neither one of my husbands EVER did that.

AND...he's kinky. He has a plastic bag fetish. Honest. See for yourself.

in a short answer - yes ...and Daddy would say the same. my cat-like personality wouldn't be compatible to most however it fits perfectly with Him since He's cat type too.

Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw somewhere...
"Dogs have Masters...

Cats have SLAVES"

Me - I see my self more as a dog...loyal, obediant, loving, caring, comes when called, fetches things. I have always had dogs in my home - from birth until now.

Mine isn't.  He has always been a cat lover and has never cared much for dogs or their common traits.

Master would say that those are admirable traits to a point.  He doesn't like dogs who are just "dumb animals," following whomever has the food and will pet them occasionally.  He doesn't like submissives or slaves who are that way either.  He thinks loyalty and dependability are grand but being so trusting as to be gullible or being so desirous of pleasing no matter what the cost without any thinking entering in He considers just as displeasing in people as in dogs.
quote:

Of course they can and many are.  Some would say they make the most satisfactory and pleasing submissives.  If I hadn't been independent and self-reliant, Master would have never given me a second thought in the first place.  Perhaps there are others such as myself who are a pleasing blend of the traits of both animals................luci

I have cats that are wrapped around my little finger. My slave, while he has his eager puppy qualities, is more cat than dog. Yes, a more cat-like individual can make a great submissive, if that's what he or she chooses.

The first time he stayed at my house it took just one fricking word from him to keep Mickey the Wonderdog off the bed! Sweet (evil) tiny and ancient (yayyy her 20th bday is this week) BarneyCat halted her chronic all night howling for every night he was here. He is dom, hear him whisper which somehow translates into a roar. Moments after he left both critters returned to their normal behaviour.... apparently I'm just not alpha enough for either of them.

i am a cat-type...suprise, suprise, and i can be very submissive...and trained very well....there is a trick to training cats - you convince the cat it is their idea to do what ever it is that you want them to do...much easier with the human variety as they speak the same language as you...the feline variety you have to use hand signals and treats and such...

oh and my owner is a reluctant cat-lover...he's much more of a big dog, lets romp and play, type person...but he still loves cats...and doesn't understand when i get jealous of him petting other female cats...even when they are the feline variety....

Im Definatly a cat person, to quote greedy, I am owned and operated by her. And I am not afraid to admit Ill listen to her before a Potential owner. (She doesnt like him, it doesnt last very long) As for How I am, I am one of those greedy little lap cats, I adore attention, I always seem to be bothering you for it, and usually get it because Im just to cute to stay No to half the time. If my owner wanted a dog type, he could go out and buy one for 50 bucks at spca. Personally while I understand dogs are great for "obedience" blind following of orders no matter how stupid, just seems like a waste of a good human to me.

I answered your question based on the assumption this is what you were asking. It appears, to me at least, that others did as well.

Why do you assume an independent / "cat personality" person wouldn't make for a good sub? A fair amount of Doms prefer it.
