I'm watching Law & Order : Criminal Intent tonight, and a chick is murdered by strangulation while tied up with jute, shibari style.

My younger sister who found out a few weeks ago about my .... interests in this lifestyle, is watching with me ... and freaking out, saying things like "See, this is why I am worried for you...."

hmmmm ....

Pyrrsefanie -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/10/2008 8:11:27 PM)

Law & Order SVU is filled with "BDSM" murders, same with CSI: Vegas.  I'm in love with Lady Heather, I think.  [:D]

and i'm not even bi.

bipolarber -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/11/2008 6:09:01 AM)

BDSM murders and other alternative sexuality killings as well. They are doing their part, probably unintentionally, to keep the herd fearful of possibly trying anything new. (Like anything that involves the lights being on, or other than the missionary position.) You have to wonder if there isn't a cumulative attitude that comes from watching these types of shows... "We should put a stop to this, because obviously these people are putting themselves in danger."

TheHungryTiger -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/11/2008 7:29:30 AM)

Ya do realise that its not just bdsm. EVERY demographic is misrepresented on television.

I know more than a few lawers that get pissed watching the same shows. Screaming at the screen 'why dosent oposing councel object' or 'no real judge would ever allow that evedience'.  I would even argue that an inaccurate view of the legal system is more damaging than an inaccurate view of bdsm. People who think that a courtroom in real life is the same as what they see on tv are the people who serve on jurries.

Why is it that whenever you see people on television playing chess its always because they are cold-hearted scheeming manipulative people who are forever using others for their own gain. Im not like that. Most people I play chess againt are not like that. Heck, I would be happy if I could see people playing chess on tv where the board is set up corectly.

Go visit a facial hair forum/newsgroup sometime and see how many people whine and bitch that the villian always has a goetee.

Or how about this one? Whenever you see a fundementalist christian it always winds up in the end that they are a homophobic bigioted hypocrite who is secretly doing the very thing they are so vocal againt. And not just fiction either. How often to reports paint Eliot Spitzer as a bible thumping biggot even though he is jewish? Larry Craig focused his entire carrer on veterian benifits and agraculture funding yet the media pains him as a religious zealot too. How many people in this very thread are going to respond back saying 'but thats difrent, all christians realy ARE hatemongers'

When I can watch a sci-fi program and have explotions in space not makeing noise, then I will start to worry about how kink is never shown right.

SteelofUtah -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/11/2008 8:54:29 AM)

See this is why I think I would like to start workshops on Positive D/s Connections to give even us in the lifestyle a more positive twist on some of the things we do. I understand that all relationships in BDSM are not always emotion based and so not all of BDSM would be represented but if even just one part could be represented in a Positive way that would be great.

Um... you never watched "Firefly" did you? All their space scenes were shot silent. and um... BSG generally does the same, although they sometimes add stuff that implies what the people inside the ships are hearing.

Sure TV gets it wrong. It has to in order to generate a dramatic story in under an hour. It's the friggin' stereotyped cliches that are causing harm. Your examples about how christians are portrayed as evil hypocrites is apt. They are the largest religion in the US, but they take the rap for the actions of a very (highly visible) few.

Just once, I'd like to tune in to Law & Order or CSI, or any of those other shows, and see them come across a couple of straight white christians who have killed each other by just doing drugs or something... and not because they were playing kinky sex games.

hlen5 -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/11/2008 1:19:19 PM)

bipoarber,

I  don't believe your first comment about keeping the masses safe, it's about selling soap and new and improved whatever on tv. You're right I think that stereotypes are just easy to latch onto for a 48 minute story. I think it says something about the general public being curious about bdsm (even if they never try it themselves) that it is an easy hook to get people to watch a program.

I found out about cm because of the CSI Ms Heather storyline. I agree she is totally hot. Thank You CSI!!

Huntertn -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/11/2008 6:30:08 PM)

Has anyone seen the latest one on Miss Heather where her daugther is killed by a serial killer ?  Miss Heather graps him right out from under the CSI police and takes him out into the deseart..and is beating the crap out of him till the head  guy figures it out and comes to find them. He finds her stripping the fleash of his back with a bullwhip . Point was she was stopped by him..but the guy killer her only daugther like that....but that was Not real!
In real life, people make mistakes..while others are true preditors...and hurt or kill even.  All You have to go on is your own training and instinks that you have built up over the years..Just because your now into the kinky lifestyle doesn't mean you stop thinking... and you need to tell her that!!

I did like the CSI where a woman was strangled and they immediately suspected her sexual partner as being the killer after they found handcuffs and floggers in the bedside table. He was cleared after he told them he was the submissive and the killer turned out to be someone else.

Alumbrado -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/24/2008 1:07:42 PM)

If its on prime time as a plot device that often, then it is about as mainstream as Fonzi's leather jacket.

In all fairness, they also portray the resturant business, banking, insurance sales and high school field trips pretty negitivly too...

I had to go dig up this quote because I think it is priceless and always think of it when I see a thread about Law and Order

Tips her hat to Topcat...thanks for the smile that just keeps returning [:D]

BlackPhx -> RE: Law & Order CI (5/28/2008 12:06:41 PM)

In that one unlike real life they were willing to entertain the possibility that it was not the lover or husband etc. Statistics point to the fact that you are more likely to die at the hand of someone you know than a stranger.

Now here's the kicker. Shows like CSI have done a lot to get juries to expect DNA evidence, forensics etc. that most counties don't have the funds for, cannot get done in the amount of time displayed and are not equipted to do thyemselves. They also condition people to think that the CSI people are the ones investigating and  solving the crimes instead of just collecting the evidence and processing it. Ever notice how little the Detectives are involved in solving the cases? Same goes for the shows like Shark..where are the Cops? At least Law and Order gives you a little of both, but if you are every arrested don't expect to go to trial in a couple of weeks. By the time your lawyer and the prosecutor have done depositions, discovery, filed and exhausted motions and delays, you will have already spent at least 1 year if not more waiting to come to trial in lockup if you can't post or no bail is given. You can demand a speedy trial, but even that depends on the court calendar having an opening and few but the most complicated high profile cases take more than a day or two to resolve once it is in court.

Sit in on a murder trial and you will soon figure out why things are so dramatic on TV..the reality is often very cut and dried and boring, even for the jury. Perry Mason or Law and Order it aint'
