The League of Nations which was more of a talking shop evolved into the UN after WW2 as a way of helping to rebuild many shattered countries, if it hadn't of been for Woodrow Wilson's foresight, the framework for the UN would not of been in place. The guy is a hero as far as I am concerned and he richly deserved the Noble peace prize. So the US was there from the beginning and continues today.

Jesus fucking christ [8|] ... You talk on behalf of an entire nation and say that 'Burma hates us anyway': when were you elected as spokesperson for the Burmese people? Who is this 'us' you refer to?

People like you who talk in nothing else than generalities as if they owned the universal truth astound me...

"Us" would be the Americans. If you disagree with my statement - hop on an airliner and go over there to help. Be sure to announce that you are an American. See what happens and then report back.... LOL There is a reason there are State Dept travel warnings, embassy evacuations of all non essential personells, A probibition on US investment since 1997, a freeze on Burmeese assets and financial institutions, a designation as a Country of Particular Concern, a Tier 3 human trafficic rating, and various sanctions. including a ban on all imports from Burma. Could have something to do with the genocide? Or maybe the million refugees who fled the country? Or the rape and beheading of the Vatican delegation? (Yep nothing says "welcome" like raping and beheading nuns!) Or the aducted and murdered "doctors without borders" workers? Or the UN Mine Action Program humanitarian deminers who had their arms chopped off?  But yes by all means - head on over to Burma and see if Im wrong about them.

... Seriosuly though, screw Burma. We dont need them, they dont like us anyway....

But therein lies the problem DA - to judge the Burmese people as hateful because of the hateful attitudes of their unelected leaders.

Its a similar association which drives hatred against ordinary citizens of the US (and UK) on the grounds of the hateful attitudes of our leaders - except that we get to elect our leaders I understand

True Lady E,

It`s the same neurosis at play on both sides and from both perspectives.A trench mentality of sorts, full of boogie men and scary monsters.

I don`t want to be associated with Bush or the asshats who defend/support him.But as an American,I am.

I would like our foreign policy to be a little more sophisticated than that.

The willingness to rise above the pettiness of our enemies is what separates the men from the boys and is what leadership is about.

I am not an American - far from it. It's a reason to be grateful that not all Americans think like you either: perhaps you should declare secession, and create your own country  [8|] ?

FAST REPLY:

Here's a pretty good program about the problems in Burma, and it illustrates why neither the British, French, or the Americans can necessarily take the moral high ground on the problems there.  We all have major corporations doing business there, and there are strong implications that those corporations have profited from forced labor.

Anyway here it is.  It's in 5 parts:

Slaveboy, you intrigue me.
Speaking from a UK perspective one does not associate Southern states of the US with an espousal of Liberal causes .
What happened to you lol. Can you safely walk the streets he he he he he

I believe Dispatches is a UK TV documentary programme.

Hey Seeks,

I am moderate on most issues.  But, I do have far-right and leftist views on other issues.  I think there are a lot of misconceptions about the South.  You'll find that most people in this region are more populist than right wing.  Yes, there are some social issues that some of the biggest loud mouths get a lot of attention for.  But, most of us aren't bible-thumping nutjobs.

When we discussed the Tibet issue, I was against us meddling.  While I do see the Chinese for what they are..a communist regime, they are at least making progress.  The Chinese aren't starving the Tibetans to death or committing genocide.

The Burmese Junta isn't making progress, they are starving their own people, and they are committing genocide.  Honestly, they are just a bunch of bastards.  I am not for military intervention there or in any country that isn't attacking us.  But I always think we should help people in a humanitarian crisis.  It's the decent thing to do.  We should never just stand idly by and watch people suffer like that.  I am all for us air dropping in food and supplies, and ignoring the protests of the Junta.  I think we have a right to do it under international law.  Unfortunately I believe the hesitance from both my government and your own lies in the fact that some of our corporations are scared of losing their golden goose there. Yeah, dispatches is a UK program.  I found that particular program the other day, and I thought it was interesting.

LE,

I understand that but you also have to realize that I sat on a ship watching the corpse of an American helicopter pilot being dragged, by the intestines, through the streets of a country by the very people we were helping to feed.

They mutilated and desecrated the corpses of Army Rangers who went there to feed their sorry asses, during a famine in which over 200,000 of them died. As they slaughtered our men, Hillary's husband got head and wouldnt let us go fly air support...

Yep, anything Clinton wanted to do overseas was immediately tagged as "Wagging the Dog".  Including lofting some cruise missiles at Saddam.  Remember the town hall meetings about that?  Folks were practically in hysterics about us bombing Iraq.

Times change....especially after the Clinton admin said "no going in with force unless you have an exit strategy." (1996)
