bipolarber -> McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/11/2008 9:08:58 PM)

Okay, they've been pushing this one all day. It features John McCain and his mother talking about when he was born. John asks his Mom:
"I was born on a Friday, right Mom?"
"No, it was a Staurday."
"Oh, I thought it was during happy hour."
"No it was a Saturday. I remember THE CLUB was nearby, and there were 27 bottle of scotch given to you as presents."

Okay, so... John McCain thought that maybe his mother went into labor during happy hour... (while she was drinking in her last trimester.)

Also, they belonged to a country club that was near a hospital. Considering the time this must've been, it most likely was a "whites only" country club. And the men there had no problem giving bottle of hard liqour to a baby....

Oh, no... remember, Barrak Obama is the eletist here, right?

Has anyone else found themselves a little bothered by the repeated viewings of this ad?

Alumbrado -> RE: McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/11/2008 9:58:06 PM)

For those who have been in the military, the juxtaposition of hospital and 'The Club' might suggest the 'O' club, given who his parents were, and the location being the Panama Canal Zone.

Gotta love all the conclusions you are leaping to here, Bipo.  Way to flip out the race card too.  Perhaps you'd care to comment on his time as a P.O.W. as well?

You mean McCains Far East vacation being waited upon hand and foot by a dedicated staff of employees at the spa resort? [:D]

TheHeretic -> RE: McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/11/2008 10:57:26 PM)

I hadn't heard that bit of spin yet, Alum.  I'm sure there are more than a few Dems just gnawing at the muzzle over McCain saying a lot more than "name-rank-service number" during his stay in Hanoi.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/11/2008 11:22:41 PM)

I've never seen this add, but why would it bother me?  As others have said, you are really jumping to some outrageous conclusions.  I don't know where you dreamt up this all white country club connection, but I find it ironic coming from you.  You live in one of the whitest towns in the state.

Alum, you are absolutely 100% correct... John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone at NAS Coco Solo. HARDLY an "all whites country club" as the OP suggested - and for the edification of the OP an Officer's Club, particularly in a third world facility like the Canal Zone, Cubi Pt, etc is hardly the lap of luxury. We are talking govt issue SeaBee construction here not mahogany wainscotting and gold plated fixtures. For those who have been in the Navy - three of the most popular dishes in the wardroom ("elite" officers dining facility - also desegregated since Truman)  were called "Sliders", "Bug Juice", and "AutoDog"... Oh and FYI officers PAY for food. We settle up our wardroom bill every month...

Oh and regarding the POW issue - McCain's actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the Naval Service and in full compliance with the "Code of Conduct" instructions taught in SERE. He brought no dishonor to anyone, least of all the Navy. The say nothing but Name, Rank, and Service number is a myth! Article V of the code of conduct says what info you have to provide and then "I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability." Article III says  "I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy." and McCain upheld that when he refused release on the basis of who his father was (CINPACNAVAIR - Commander In Chief Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet)... EVERYONE can be broken, and if you dont think you can - join up and go through a SERE class. I spent 11 days in the hospital after mine, needed rabies shots, and lost 23 pounds in a week... Thats TRAINING, McCain had the real deal...

I'm used to TV ads being repeated so often that I can recite them in my sleep, so that didn't bother me.  That's the way it's done these days.  I saw the McCain ad probably 3 times yesterday.  I'm sure I saw the Cialis ad more often than that.

As far as the ad itself goes, I thought that it was a pretty smart move on the part of the McCain team.  I'll bet that the Clinton and Obama teams are kicking themselves for not thinking of this.  It was completely positive and upbeat, and Mom McCain was charming.  His age is going to be an issue, and putting him out there with his mom made him seem younger, or at least not *that* old.  It also made him look like a real sweetie, which may help some voters believe that the reports of his nasty temper are overblown.

I'll bet that we'll be seeing this kind of ad every election year Mother's Day from now on, and I'm sure that Father's Day will be similarly befouled.

orfunboi -> RE: McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/12/2008 5:21:52 AM)

The ad didn't bother me a bit. Of course, I am not sitting around, trying to come up with something, anything, to bitch about.

The zero's were always welcome to come down and eat what the enlisted had no choice but to eat if they disliked their food so much. Whatever the wardroom served you can sure the enlisted galley served worse.

Archer -> RE: McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/12/2008 5:58:52 AM)

Bipolar I've gotta add my jabs at your ignorant by definition assumptions.
The Officer's Club explains the mention of "The Club" drinking during the last trimester bit, assumes she was drinking alcohol, The Officer's Club on many bases offers meals, party rooms, fund raising rental rooms, Sunday Brunch, etc they are not just Alcohol Drinking Establishments. The Officer's Wives Auxillary often hold charity events on Saturdays to raise money for people who need help.

They belonged to a country club that was near a hospital, ????????????
No they belonged to the Officer's club on a military base and as on almost all bases that means it's going to be near the Base Hospital. Most Likely White Only????????????? Military bases were desegrigated before the rest of the country. (Turman)
McCain was likely raised in a more racially tollerant area (military bases), than anyone else during that time.

But keep right on making up bullcrap lies out of a lack of information to suit your predisposed dislike for the man.

Having a mom how is alive and sharp as a tack mentally also will help alieve the minds of voters about a possible repeat of Regan's alzhiemers.

What about McCain`s "senior moments"(google those words) where he seems to have no grasp on the facts or events.

On his last trip to Iraq(and other times),he has needed Joe Lieberman to come up behind him,tap McCain on the shoulder(during a press conference) and whisper into his ear the correct answer or fact.

Doesn`t make the guy look all that sharp.

We need someone in office a bit sharper.

The add was standard mom and pop,feel-good gooey-sticky fun stuff.

But a very cleaver way to make McCain not look so old.

Put a 90 y/o next to a 70 y/o and the 70 year old is going to seem younger.

Grampa is still behind both democrats in most leading polls.

MladyHathor -> RE: McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/12/2008 8:58:51 AM)

I don't care what the behinbd the scenes meanings are--it was stupid--it  had nothing to do with his ability to lead a country. Waste of air time.

Right.... because caring about correcting misinformation is sooooo 2000

Actually I said it partly in jest. Bug Juice was pretty good and it sure did a nice job shining buckles and buttons. LOL For those who dont know - bug juice is "navy koolaid" and the color bears no relation to the flavor. Ie the purple one may be orange, the orange one may be cherry etc...  It actually wasnt bad but it did make a hell of a cleaner / metal polish. Yeah McCain was really raised with a silver spoon in his mouth - one shined in bug juice with a big ol glob of AutoDog on it LOL

Well IMHO, his age won't show till we see who is running mate is---if its someone we could live with in the event of a debilitating illness--then he won't look so old, if its someone we can't stand, his age will look really old really fast.

popeye1250 -> RE: McCains Mother's Day Ad (5/12/2008 11:08:59 AM)

McCain went to The Naval Academy.
Of course his grandfather and father were *Admirals* but *of course* that had nothing to do with him getting in right?
Also, he was what they call "a reverse ace."
That means he crashed 5 planes not shot down 5 planes.
Anyone else who's grandfather and father wearn't Admirals would have been gone at 3.
He finished 3rd from the bottom of his class.
He liked hanging around the Officer's Club drinking beer more than he did hanging around the hangers.
Hardly an "eliteist." More like a fuckup.
Now Alabama went to "Hah-vard."
And he's been described as "brilliant." "A brilliant legal scholar."
(Of course all lawyers who pass the bar are, "brilliant legal scholars.")
And he just recently took up "beer drinking" with the hoi poloi.
Now who's the eliteist, a beer swilling, plane-crashing, fuck up who crashed 5 planes, graduated almost at the bottom of his class and got shot down over N.Vietnam or the guy who went to "Hah-vard" and has no military experience?

Actually I said it partly in jest.

I knew you were saying it in jest. That is what annoyed me so much. zero's got their own kitchen and a disproportionate cut of the food budget but still bitched and moaned about food in the wardroom. Did you guys ever even wonder how truly awful the food in the enlisted galley was?

As to McCain, he was a naval aviator mostly due to his ancestry. That doesn't earn him any points in my book. He did distinguish himself while in captivity and nothing can change that. However he lost my vote after the way he knuckled under to GWB and Rove after 2000 and the final nail was cozying up to Robertson, Hagee and Parsley.

His inability to keep basic facts straight about his supposed area of expertise and his own admission that he knows nothing about the economy or economics just confirms I won't be voting for him.

But I hope everyone stays away from criticizing his military record or his behaviour as a POW.
