asked and answered on a similar thread titled "needs" and reprinted here:

without anything more specific, this slave thought about her "needs" and the things that Master provides for her.....
If something was wrong with the plumbing and this slave had no water to drink?
call the plumber.
If we ran out of food and the cupboards were bare?
go to the store.
If the house burned down without us in it?
get another one.
If this slave ran out of medicine?
go buy it.
the only other need this slave has is to serve, and Master gives her ample opportunity for that.

pretty much everything else can be considered a want and expendable.

Those Webster's definitions are very strange.

At one time 'want' had a very clear meaning, but it has gradually come closer and closer to 'need'.

'Want' meant something you didn't have. So you could say 'I want hair on my head' or 'he wants common courtesy'.

'Need' meant something you required for a purpose. 'I need a ticket to be able to see that show' or 'I need food to survive'.

So it was possible to want something you needed. Or indeed, to want something you *didn't* need.

It's a shame the definitions have become so confused.

Ahhh but that is just evolution. I can remember when the word naughty had a diifferent common acceptance than it does now. It used to mean that some one was breaking the rules. Now it tends to have sexual commotations. I also remember when people had a gay time and were said to me gay as in happy and not homosexual.... Have a good wander through Will Shakespear and you'll find a great many changes in how words are now perceived. These days I find it often a help to add small explanations or examples of the usage of some words which people in other countries may find confusing. (At least untill they get used to the way I write).

NEED = What I require to survive and if desired, to improve my quality of life (Like being finally pain free).

I've had to relegate this to a "want"... I've discovered that I can still function with a relatively high level of chronic pain, and I -have- to function with that level of pain, so the "need" got downgraded. *chuckles* Don't get me wrong... if I can find someone or something to give me some relief for a while, I'll take it in a blink... but I've figured out that I can survive, and even thrive, under the duress of pain, so I've decided that, for me, freedom from pain is a luxury. As my mom used to say "if wishes were horses, beggers would ride".

Wishing you the best in your search for freedom from pain.

Yes, that is true. But I always find it sad when useful distinctions are lost, which often seems to happen.

NEED = What I require to survive and if desired, to improve my quality of life (Like being finally pain free).

WANT = Specific things I desire and are attainable but may not have figured out the best and most effecient method of getting yet. ( I see - I want - I will have).

DESIRE = Things I like. things I see and can fantasise about but are not essentials, things or people who I want to get to know for what ever reason. People who leave me with a raging hard on but are mostly unattainable (at the moment) but are great fantasy material (Like having Angelina Jolie kneeling naked before me or leading her in a shirik only in public on my leash ~ great ego bosting but not practical). These are things which mostly fit into the realm of impossible dreams but are damned good when you are fighting extreme pain and trying to keep on going)

When you are done with angelina my friend send her this way I will take seconds

I need oxygen,
I want the world to be a better place,
I desire someone who gives themself to me from the heart.

RiotGirl -> RE: needs wants desires (10/22/2005 10:49:45 PM)

things i dont need = )

clothes, i'm perfectly happy walking around naked (yup been with out it)

Shoes - i try and go with out them

interaction with other ppl - i got enough in my head (no seriously i can entertain myself) (yup been with out it)

food - and i could do with ALOT less of what Master shoves down my throat! (yup been with out it)

water - dont really drink it (yup been with out it)

shelter - playing in the rain and laying on the grass looking up in the sky do well for me (yup been with out it)

tv - dont watch it really (yup been with out it)

books - like em, but eh dont need em (yup been with out it)

phone - dont really use it (yup been with out it)

electricity - find a pong cool off! (yup been with out it)

hmmmmm what else could there possibly be, that has to be listed as a need?

Warmth? does a tank top in 40 degree weather nil that out? Heat and cold is like something your body simply has to adjust too. Embrace the cold i always told myself as i froze. ((yup been with out it))

partying - dont need it.

And of course there is ALOT of things i love doing. Things i like to participate in them. <shrugs> But if they arent there i'm not gonna fall apart crying about it.

<grins> Hell i've sat in an isolated solitary cell 24/7 for 2 weeks straight. Yup that concrete was cold and um boring. But guess what i did? i learned how to crack every joint in my body! And i played in my head.

i've walked through DC in the winter, with little coverage on my feet. What'd i do? Sat down and kept rubbing frostbite out of my toes!

You people dont realise, you dont NEED this stuff you think you need. You WANT it. God's sake, do you think the explorers of the new land that used to be our country NEEDED half the stuff you think you do? i'm quite sure they didnt go out of their minds because their life wasnt filled with cable, message boards and ect.

you honestly dont need half the crap you think you do. BUT if its what you want to think, then by all means, why do i care?

swtnsparkling -> RE: needs wants desires (10/23/2005 6:17:09 AM)

You may of been without food or water for certain time periods but i'd like to see just how long you can go without it and still survive.
No food, no water, no shelter, and of course your bare assed in Alaska.
should we take bets on survial LOL
i do believe those things are needs
i was not there at the time of the explorers but i'd bet they didnt head out to explore with out those things either.

Need - something that one must have to survive.
Want-Something that an individual would like to have but does not really feel that it is a necessity
Desire - Something that you crave and yearn for. Something that you need quenched...like an extreme thirst.

ppaddleman -> RE: needs wants desires (10/24/2005 7:08:24 AM)

Physical needs are just food and water and such.

Emotional NEEDS are thsoe needs which must be met in order to allow you to effectively function as a normal human be it a need to love or a need to serve.

Desires are those things which make life more fulfilling but which you can still function without.

So, for instance, the need to serve can be a need or it can be a desire, depending on you. If you find life is worthless without a dom to serve then it may be a need. If life is just more satisfying if you have adom then its a desire..

I'd say that to me a need is something that I cannot live without and I *literally* cannot function in a relationship without. Not something I'll be hurt and pout over but just cannot function without.

A want is something I want but can absolutely live without.

A desire is a fleeting longing for something. Like a craving for chocolate.

Noooooooooooo not in Alaska! Dontcha know they gots big Mosiquitos there????? i'd get my bare frozen butt bitten.

True you cant go with out food or water indefinetly. But ya can go a looooong time on little food next to none. Especially starting out as one of us over fed americans. Having a healthy well fed body and then cutting off the food supply to it, usually throws your body into what they call "starvation mode" Which means everything gets burned slower, much slower. It'd prolly take longer then a month to wither away at my size. (and i'm pretty little from what i hear)

Point is, look around you. You dont need it.
