I'd like to thank everyone for their replies. I will say I'm a bit surprised not to have been deluged by tales of forced conversions, though it is possible those converted aren't answering.

My own issue- some may see this as intolerant, but I don't think so. I was raised Catholic, and, even as a kid, I didn't really buy it. So, to me it always seems natural to question one's beliefs, and this is hardwired into me. I simply can not understand one sticking to a worldview, unquestioned, simply because one's family accepts it as a "gospel truth".

I don't believe that one's politics, religion, or even car preference (I have encountered Ford families before), should be hereditary. If I met somebody that was very religious, but had reached that state after exploring various religions and philosophies, I would respect their decision, p[artially because they had actually made a decision.

Perhaps my question wasn't really about religion- it's about respecting the thought processes of the person you are with. I don't think anyone has any worthwile future with someone they don't respect.

Interesting thread.

If anything, when one aspires to follow a religion as strictly as possible, as I try to do myself (and no I'm not christian) it naturally leads to major diffculty in finding a suitable partner willing to convert or already of that religion. I haven't found her yet in any case ;) .

I do feel however that it establishes a limit which much more absolute than the 'hard limits' we talk about in a bdsm sense. It is something which both dom and sub know they will both never (wish to) engage in. You may realise that such a thing is difficult when christianity is under discussion as there are a 1001 different interpretations of their rulings, but this is less so in my own religion.

I've been involved with a couple of dominants that are staunch atheists, while I'm quite spiritual. ( I wouldn't call myself "religious" though). It HAS, in the past, been a breaking point in each relationship. One in particular has 4 UMs at home and when I asked if he stood in their way of being spiritual, he said "when they turn 18 and are out of my home, they can explore anything they want. However, while they are living under my roof, they will not believe in the "little man in the sky"."

He and I still talk from time to time, but as for a relationship, that was too harsh for me.

Sir and I share the same beliefs.  In my opinion, it enhances our relationship.

I am a Protestant and Master is a Catholic we disagree on certain points but we both basically believe the same thing.  I don't agree with all the Catholic church dotricne.

However master would nerver try to make me convert because i would not.    If master was an athiest it would never work between i could not be with somon who did

not believe bsically woth my beliefs

See...now that guy is an obnoxious and intolerant Athiest. I have my opinions and my views and I will gladly share them in the proper forum of discussion (the Internet mainly). In real time, I usually tend to warn people that if they ask me why I don't follow a particular "spirituality", my answers will probably offend them. I also tend to tell people upfront that I am just generally incapable of understanding religous beliefs.

However, I realize that's what I think and what I beleive and everyone has to come to their own conclusions.

The only real difference between being an Athiest and being spiritual is that I get my morals, values, and understanding of the world from philosophy which is fueled by logic and religious people get theirs from whatever mystical thinking that someone pulled out of thin air one day and wrote a book about it.

It's not a big secert that I think my way is the best (which is why I chose it), but if you find some semblance of truth and enlightment in mystical thinking, then I won't stand in your way and probably support you in your endeavors.

Amen!  Former Catholic now Protestant....seeking to serve in more ways than one ;-)  Very open minded as well and constantly questioning, too.
