JulieorSarah -> RE: Tax inspector (5/18/2008 4:32:48 PM)

Hello all
i posted this.  to me it is having a shot at bureaucracy, officialdom and Any tax office.  I found it mildly amusing as I work in accounts and regualarly deal with the Australian Taxation Office.  While many are reasonable there are quite a few 'complete dicks' in that organisation.

It's a joke if you find it amusing great, if you don't take it in the spirit in which it was meant.  Replace the rabbi with a parish priest, a synod secretary, the head witch in a coven, etc, the story only changes in detail.  for that matter, change the detail to a brothel, candles, alchohol, and condoms ... it still applies as an attack on the tedium of detail that Tax offices make us all do.

So if you work for any tax office and have taken offence at this, I apologise.

If they work in a tax office, they may know the guy!

See I didn't see this as a Jew Joke. I saw this as an IRS Joke.

The Humor is that the Rabbi put the Auditor in his place by giving him very rational and plausable answers to his questions.

I think anyone who tries to make it personal is someone who can't take a joke. Of all the things to get your panties in a bunch over a Joke certainly shouldn't be one of them.

In this day and age there are certainly many more things to come to arms over.

I think those who get upset at jokes take themselves too seriously

Remember folks Don't take life so seriously cause no one ever gets out alive.

The real humour to me lay in the defence squad that rushed to the rescue of the joke [:D] .

What rather than running to the Joke Bashing and rediculas concept that it was an attack?

Humor can be found in both corners

What I find odd is you seem to only enjoy yourself at the expence of another as you have shown in this and other threads. I'm wondering if you even care or were you just bored?

Now that is funny because I didn't see it as defense. You were unable to see what the humor in the joke was about, and people tried to explain. I thought it was a joke about the IRS and actually I thought it was cute.

I thought it was funny because he was calling the guy a complete dick to his face without actually saying, "you know, you're a complete dick."

I wish I had a clever way of saying that to someone! (I don't want to use foreskins as my visual aid though hehe)

SteelofUtah -> RE: Tax inspector (5/19/2008 12:13:00 PM)

I just tell people the remind me of my closest friend.

People who know me get the joke those who don't well it's kinda lost on them.

Fast reply.

Why does anyone care about my objection to the joke, if it's only humour? The reactions to my reaction have been bordering on virulent. This is why...

Humour isn't all that benign. It's a revelatory agent for many things that it would otherwise be taboo to voice. That's why sexual humour invariably has people in a stitch. Or scatological humour: it makes children laugh because they know it's 'dirty'. The same goes for any brand of humour: if you missed on the subversive nature of the joke in question, all the better for you. I envy your innocence. [8|]

SteelofUtah -> RE: Tax inspector (5/19/2008 12:42:13 PM)

I believe the subversive nature is being speculated on because as the OP posted in a reply you could change the context to anything and the joke still works remove all the Titles of people and just use X and Y and the joke is still funny.

I think perhaps those who look for something to complain about will always find one.

It's a Joke and nothing more sure if you want to disect it you can, I tend to enjoy comedy and just like to laugh. Sure we laugh about some very harsh issues but I find there is a reason that timing makes something funny and that is because often we are laughing at the situation not the people involved in the joke. I didn't find the joke Funny because it was a Rabbi or because it was an Auditor I found it funny because someone called someone a dick in a rather pofessional manner.

I am sure you can take it and twist it and spin it and make it into direct anti-semitism or perhaps anti-government or hell call it Pro Circumsision or an anti-tax joke but in the end someone found it funny and you didn't.

To speculate that perhaps those who find it funny have an alterior motive seems to me to insight simply the idea that either one you judge people very stongly over something so small or you just like to stir the muck.

I cannot possible see another reason to take such an obtuse view of something as silly as this joke and make it somehow Dark and insidious. I just don't see what your point would be.

kittinSol -> RE: Tax inspector (5/19/2008 1:01:51 PM)

My point is this: there is meaning in everything, including in a seemingly innocent 'joke'. A joke can be taken at many levels: yes, the punch line is reasonably amusing(there's no arguing over taste, I suppose) . Yes, there are many other levels at which it can be interpreted, which I choose to see, and to comment upon. I see nothing wrong with it. With a great sense of humour such as yours, don't you think you're taking this a little too seriously?

As far as I'm concerned, the subject's closed.

Termyn8or -> RE: Tax inspector (5/19/2008 6:09:40 PM)

I'm all for dropping it, but the question now is - will they let us ?
