......too bad it wasn't being held by one a them there terrorists......

Give the kid a break.....he volunteered to put his life on the line to go into a combat zone.....so a 19 year old in a highly stressful situation did something really dumb........If he walked into to the bar in my hometown he'd be given a standing ovation....

I think that is the real problem of a war. People not directly involved sometimes feel more hatred then the ones involved.
Such things are food to continue wars.

This guy was a Civil War historian?  I don't know anyone who believes that.  Even the best disciplined army has those who break the rules and rape, robbery and murder are all too common events in war.

If he wasn't a Civil War historian, then his opinion doesn't matter much as specialization is the curse of academia.  For example, a chemist may be just as ignorant as anyone regarding psychology.  Heck, you should see the brawls between the qualitative and the quantitative sociologists.

That was my point about him in the first place.  He is supposed to be a college educated history major with extensive knowledge of the civil war ... his claim, not mine.  Like so many supposed experts, he had learned only the barest of the subject.  I have no degree but am a history fanatic.  It fascinates me and I will sit for hours reading what my nieces in high school call "boring history books."

If we forget history, we are doomed to repeat it.  I have firmly believed that quote since I first read it as a child.

I don't think anyone with a knowledge of history and living in today's world would dispute it.

One of the older buildings on the campus at FSU has Augustine Birrell's maxim that 'history is a pageant, not a philosophy...' unfortunately agitprop has seeped even into the study of history.
