Can anyone tell me what section of the public library I would look in to find books on BDsM ? Self help section? I haven't come acrosss even one novel on the subject in the romantic fiction section, unless I just don't know what I'm looking for......I've even looked it up on the library computer and come up with nothing, not sure what I'm doing wrong.....

Books on bdsm are unfortunately on the most frequently stolen list even if your library has any.  You may have to  buy some.  If money is tight, at least some fiction considered to be Ds classics can be found in used book stores, Anne Rice's bdsm erotica for instance.   There is always ebay for more expensive hardcover books.  Good luck.

Beyond psychology books, I'm doubtful that many libraries offer the books written by those who practice BDSM in their meatlives. And yet there are a ton of these available today.

Some organizations have lending libraries for their members and when I was still part of a local community I also had a private lending library that I let folks I grew to trust use. I collected names, addresses, phones numbers, and all that stuff just in case someone took a book. I could do that because I have fairly good library since I'm a book reviewer.

Ellsa -> RE: BDsM books...... (5/19/2008 10:51:50 AM)

Try the wierd little used book stores, that's where I found John Norman's 1st book and Anais Nin, also other bdsm "manuals". I go to those places for fun, and if I am looking for a specific title I go to Amazon on the net.
If you are stuck with the library, see Anne Rolequare(Ann Rice's pen name) the "Beauty" trilogy. The do-it-yourself/ woodwork/metalwork sections will contain plenty of ideas for toy building.

azropedntied -> RE: BDsM books...... (5/19/2008 10:56:13 AM)

Also the sailing and nautical sections for rope knots .

SimplyMichael -> RE: BDsM books...... (5/19/2008 1:27:27 PM)

For a search to work, they have to have added the term "BDSM" to the book's list of related terms and they won't do that for fiction and many won't have non fiction bdsm books.  You might try searching "sadomasochism" as a search term.

Search for the more common authors
Dossie Easton
Midori
Jay Wiseman

Thank you for the responses, especially you, ellsa, I went back to the library and did find a couple of books by Ann Rice. The one I just started reading is " Exit to Eden". I'm off work the next three days and was looking for a good read... I can tell by the first chapter I'm gonna have a good book to curl up with....I didn't realize she wrote under a different name either... so, thank you.. I have also found quite a few books/novels I can buy online.. thanks to everybody for their advice.....

In my community BDSM books are hidden in peoples basements like contraband! Good luck ever finding them on a public bookshelf!

Online is a great place to find titles you want, then if your library is merely one branch of a larger organization, you could request the titles you like to be brought in for you.

She's used two for erotica:

There is a large BDSM Book List thread with links to amazon.com so you can see readers' reviews.

Because of court decisions banning the restriction of minor to certain areas of the library, librarians are reluctant to purchase explicit books, particularly explicit nonfiction books.  In fact, in my early days as an author I made a point of offering my new books to local libraries as a donation.  Without exception, they were returned... often with a nice note explaining the situation.

You're better off buying books. Book stores, and in particular online book stores, are more open to such material.

Another place to try is your local GLBT center. They often have lending libraries and cater to alternative lifestyles reading selections.

Try looking for specific titles. Some non-fiction stuff is listed in my signature.

Unless your library enforces free speech or your area has liberal views, you're unlikely to find anything there. Many libraries impose "rules" about what it and isn't an acceptable book...usually these are moral rules that fit in with the colloquial beliefs of the area. Book banning is still alive and well.

Chances are, your library is part of a computer connected network that will allow you to borrow books from around your region.  I live in Podunk, Illinois, but I can get millions of books, usually in just a few days.  It's free, and it's sort of like searching Google for something.

I would find some titles on Amazon, then plug Author names into the search at the library.  Also, you might try the all of the search terms, i.e. BDSM, Kink, Bondage, etc, and see if any titles pop out for you.  Also, librarians are smart people.  They breathe book dust all day.  [:D]  They know things.  Screw up your courage and ask.  It might surprise you what kinds of people like kink, and they do know the best books, after all.

Even though I have erotica published, I can't even slightly suggest that someone looking for BDSM information turn to a fiction book. Fiction should be for fun or after you have some basics down. I'm a snob but I prefer even my fiction be written by someone who is actually in the scene.

JANAAZ1 -> RE: BDsM books...... (5/20/2008 7:10:43 PM)

Thank you all. Thanks to ResidentSadist for that link...

bipolarber -> RE: BDsM books...... (5/20/2008 7:23:00 PM)

Also, check to see if your local library has CARL. If so, you can do a card library search by author, title, or subject. After that, it's just being able to use the Dewy Decimal System to track them down on the shelves. And remember, when you finally have found that stack of BDSM books... get in the line with the cutest librarian... you never know, s/he may look at you differently, when scanning the books...
