Ha ha! This made me laugh. Ironically, I text with the cell and my daughter types the whole thing out. She can type like a stenographer on speed.

it is already old...but this is how it started.
When I first met "such" people..I thought...what the fuck..later I thought  wtf....lol. Couldn't read a word if what they said. But you get used to it.

There are certain 'textspeak' things I don't mind.. thx, lol and it's variations (I see them as text emoticons) and things in that vein.  It's the 2, r, u, etc that drive me batshit. I don't see it as a language, I see it as an indication of laziness. in the days when cell text messaging was new, I believe it cost per character, so in that case it would make sense to abbreviate as much as possible (but most of the kids who use this txtspk now weren't even born then...). Now, when it's cheap to text (I think it's .05 p/ msg AFTER I've used my allotted freebies, which I have yet to do) there's no excuse for it, other than laziness..

Just my NSHO *grin*

well ive been using mirc since 1994 when mp3 first came out.  they were not talking like this at that time.  hackers came out 1995.  i would say i didnt first see a wide usage of this language until about 1997-98.  but thats my  experience as i have never used a bbs where it officially started.

I saw it on mIRC. I guess it has to do with what you look for there. I looked for mmm things there..lol..and wat later I found the bdsm rooms there.
It has so many different servers..soom only known by certain groups.

You're right we do accept this, and I know it wasn't always popular to do so. We have to accept some of this shit, like the fact that the word, "bootylicious" is in the dictionary. DAMN. IT.
I just wonder how ritN n dis wA will become systematized. Will it affect our linguistics? Will there be dialects? Colloquialisms? Text-bonics...woah..
