“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
~~Nelson Mandela

Language:
a systematic means of communicating by the use of sounds or conventional symbols; "he taught foreign languages"; "the language introduced is ...”
terminology: a system of words used to name things in a particular discipline; "legal terminology"; "biological nomenclature"; "the language of sociology"
linguistic process: the cognitive processes involved in producing and understanding linguistic communication; "he didn't have the language to express his feelings"
~~wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

So are my questions written above in text lingo language? They communicate, but are they systematic in their communication? Most of us can ultimately understand them, but does that mean they are linguistic or “of language?”

Here’s my shame: I’m an English major, the value of which is probably pretty obvious ("you want fries with that?"). I feel like an old bitter lady yelling at kids to get off her lawn, but this is all over CM now. Should I go put on my housecoat and slippers and sit in my Lazyboy waiting for some children to arbitrarily yell at? Is it unfair of me to wish for words?

I require complete sentences when someone emails me. If they fail to do such without leetspeak or lolcats references done in a fashion not meant to be ironic and funny, they are blocked. I don't suffer fools gladly unless I know that they're joking.

Misspellings are also a big pet peeve of mine, and I frequently find myself having to bite my tongue while on 'THE INTARWEB!!1' to avoid getting spammed with viruses and the like. Nobody likes a grammar/spelling nazi, but dammit I am. To an extent.

and for fuck's sake: TYPE. THE. WHOLE. DAMN. WORD.

it takes like two extra seconds, if that, and proves that you know how to spell simple shit like 'you' 'see' 'whatever' 'for' 'to/too/two'

The only reason I can see anything deviating from these simple grammatical rules of 'spell correctly, and speak correctly' can be MAYBE taking notes on a lecture in class, where you're going to be deciphering them later on for studies anyway.

AAAAARGHHH!!! DAMMIT TEE! Now I'm all ranty and stabbity... Where's Asher!? :(

language is dynamic. A 100 year ago they would have laughed at how we talk now.
We might dislike it, but we can't stop it beeing the language of the youth.

I ignore emails that are done so lazily. I have a journal entry about it, its one thing to abbreviate a long word but if you really cant take the time to type out 2 extra letters then your not interested enough to deserve a response. I dont like having to work to understand a post. I dont type well, o misspelling i cna handle. Accidental misspelling happens, but outright, intentional and aject laziness while typing is another story. And those who use shorthand consistantly to the point where they dont know HOW to speak without it... well, they just annoy me.

It's true. The dialects of now are mere shades of what the root languages were even fifty years ago... Slang is introduced on a daily basis, and with the inception of the internet comes a near-constant rain of new slang formed from either hilarious typos, or just stupid spellings of things. And we don't just get it from one country, it's world-wide now, so not only the English majors are shaking their heads in shame at the language of today, but pretty much everyone is.

Damn you, Internet. Damn you right to HELL!

I agree with you both. There is nothing static about any language that I know of. Still, is this language? Is it systematic? Will it become so? Wadya tnk? (tee hee)

I've been known to text back my kids when they send a text speak asking them to translate it. One sent me CUL8R and I asked why she sent the word "culture". They've given up on me ever being cool, assuming that word is still used.

Sadly, Tee, with the introduction of new slang comes a new form of dialect. Remember when Ebonics was officially accepted and considered an American dialect? Dear Gods, I got so trashed that day to keep from destroying a third-world country. It was a sad day in the history of language, and unfortunately it sets a precedent for other 'slang' dialects to be accepted as official ones later on down the road.

But long story short, I am sad to say that while it isn't something anyone with half a brain wishes, the shorthanded typing of today may later be accepted as normal tomorrow. :(
