Ok, I knew it was getting bad in the airline industry but this really caught my eye. I mean, if you're flying on a plane, obviously you're flying far enough to usually need at least one bag. So you're screwed in more than one way with them......

Layoffs, flight reductions, charging for baggage, it's all bad. Yet in this day and age, with the way we're now accustomed to travel, in a short period of time, we need the airlines. Sooooooo - do we paint large targets on our rear ends? Or try to find alternative means of transportation? I know that I have travel plans scheduled for next week (not on American) that have 2 connections and I'm being charged for my second bag. Which I'm not going to complain about, all things considered. I'll just be happy to reach Canada on time with my luggage! *grins*

Maybe "deregulation" was good for some things but that's still questionable.
However, I really don't think the Airlines should have *ever* been deregulated.
Service just keeps getting worse in all areas.

Travelers such as myself will simply decide that the $15 premium that American Airlines charges will be a determining factor on whether or not they receive my travel dollars....for me, the answer is NO.

It was because of the charge for the second bag (at the time I booked my flight, Delta didn't charge for the 2nd bag and United did) that I went with Delta. However, efective this month, Delta added the charge and it applies to everyone, regardless of when you got your ticket. As someone who has traveled a bit, both domestically and internationally, it's the service and the service charges that I'll be looking for that determine who gets my business. Sometimes, they're hidden too - not revealed until after you get your ticket. I'd say "buyer beware" but in the case of air tickets, a lot of times you're stuck if they're non-refundable.

I know a lot of people (myself included) who have started to take nothing more than a carry-on on board. It's becoming too much of shag to check anything in... They're having a laugh.

I wish market competition kicked in, but once again travellers are at the mercy of those kind enough to take their money.

I don't mind taking just a carry on for most times but jeez sometimes I want to travel with toys or skin moisturizer dang it!Even with the extra charge for a checked bag I bet a lot use it, it is awfully expensive to travel for a few days and have to buy all new deodorent (sp??), toothpaste and other sundries. If it weren't for the liquid restriction I would only do a carryon.

Yep, travelling's always required a minimum of organisation, if only just to book and board and go, but now it's like a military campaign.

I wonder whether they're simply not trying to put most people off? Airlines are overdeveloping their business class and first class and slowly eroding coach and cheap deals.

What do we want flying anyway, proles that we are  ?

The irony is that when the military flies, they carry their rifles with them. And yet we can't have more than 3 ounces of shampoo.

My carry on is now my car. I have no need or desire to fly anywhere. I'd rather drive. $120 in gas for a 900 mile trip beats a few hundred for a plane ticket.

I know what you mean, those security measures are bordering on ridiculous, especially since so much stuff filters through... they can't possibly check everyone that thoroughly, although have you heard of this new scanner ? Next they'll find a way to get us to travel completely in the buff.

It's great for exhibitionnists, I suppose  .

As for car travel, if you have to go to the other side of the Pond on a regular basis you're pretty much at the mercy of the airlines :-(. Once over there, it's relatively easy to travel by train (the infrastructure of European trains is fantastic), but... you know what I mean  .

How've you been, old bean, anyway ?

I've been alright, I suppose. Though you did make me smile, callin' me old bean.

The good thing about traveling on the miliary's dime is that you only have to deal with the headache, not the money. So there's that. THough the security stuff is sometimes rather retarded. I had a coworker once flying home in her military UNIFORM and they still made her remove her shoes and such at the checkpoint (back when they didn't make everyone do the shoe bit). It was so dumb.

I've heard of the new scanners. Personally I liked the ones from the movie "Total Recall" where you walk on one side of a wall and on the other side, the workers see a skeleton walking by. Then, if you're packin' a gun, the screen zeroes in on it and an alarm sounds. I'm fine with that. I'm not worried about my naked skeleton appearing on the net anywhere. I'm not "big-boned."

Naah, just had to register it as a lustful weapon.

If you'd like to inspect it, I'm sure a mutually beneficial treaty could be reached.

The real problem that I see is that the airlines often lie about what you can carry on the plane. I have two or three cases that all match airline/website descriptions of what will fit in overhead compartments and they are always wrong and I always have to check them in instead - especially with flights to smaller cities that are subcontracted out to smaller airlines.

I don't care about this rule if the guidelines weren't misleading. As is, you may have the constant surprise of having to check-in what should be allowed onto the plane as per the guidelines stated on their websites.

It's going to be like being mugged for an extra few bits every time they fuck you over on the guidelines for width, length, depth, weight, whatever...!

I never check baggage on a flight.  I always carry on, but I don't ever take much on trips.  I take a few changes of clothes, and I buy any hygeine products when I get to where I'm going.  If I want to bring something back I bought, I just ship it.
