There's been many reports over the last few years of the Bush Administration trying to stop Israel from making peace.

Of course we all know that John McCain does not believe in negotiating for peace .

Israel and Syria acknowledged today holding indirect talks for more than a year under the sponsorship of Turkey with the aim of reaching a peace agreement, their governments said.

``The two sides have declared their intentions to hold the talks in good faith and with an open mind,'' Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office said today on its Web site. The dialogue will be pursued in ``a serious and continuous way in order to achieve the goal of comprehensive peace,'' the government added.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Looks like the neo-cons dream(our nightmare) of perpetual war, is losing popularity.
Weird not. He wants the Palestine question solved (fits in his plans to look good) but not the Syrian problem (axes of evil story).
This really could be a major break through. Hopefully the talks will succeed, the fact they have made this announcement points towards progress.
I have said it before, Syria does not want a war with Israel.  Syria does not like Hezbollah because Hezbollah wants the land, that if returned, would belong to Syria.  Hezbollah is a common enemy. McCain has repeatedly said that he would go the same direction that Bush has.  By the same token, Obama is being naive in thinking that one more sanction is going to alter the mindset of Iran.  They have been doing without for so damn long, one more sanction will not change a thing. In fact, there have been several attempts from Iran to aid the US.   Ahmadinejad is a vet of one of the most devestating wars.  That right there does mean something.  I would still favor Obama for at least being able and willing to talk to Iran.
At any rate, I wish Israel and Syria would not include the US in any of the talks. The US has not backed Israel enough times that it should not matter.  They will get a hell of a lot farther without the US being involved. They can focus on really important things, like water, for instance.
I think what irks me most is, and I think that it stems from the media being in the pocket of the White House, is the pretense that the US is the only "other" country involved. Iran doesn't seem to have a problem with Russia or China. Syria does not seem to have a problem and in fact is a "buddy" of Russia. This is one of the primary resons that the US won't back that.  So this whole, Iran/Syria/buddy/terrorist crap is exactly that, crap.  This is  another act on the stage of the much larger countries at war over the world's scarcest resources.
It also distracts the eye from Olmert's corruption investigations rather neatly.   The main stumbling block is that promising to return the Golan Heights is one thing, actually getting the settlers there to leave may be quite another.
I agree.  However, Israel has ousted settlers before and they can do it again.
why is it crap?
btw  Most of Israels water comes from the Gollan heights. So they won't "just" give it back.
They propably will ask Syria to stop the Hezbollah.
For starters, the focus is on two countries and by themselves Iran and Syria have a tentative relationship at best.  The only common feature that they have ever shared is being outcasts.  Rather than this tunnel vision on "terrorism" there needs to be a focus on trade agreements made between Iran and China, Iran and Russia, India and Iran, Syria and Russia. What will be found is the same game being played over and over again of outside agendas at stake.
Iran needs cash. This is a country that has been looking at the possibility of war with the US since the invasion of Iraq.  This country has not been pumping out the volume of oil that it used to. This is also a country that has the firm belief that if the US is going to refuse to deal with them than they will  wheel and deal with other countries.   They have.
Hezbollah, at one time ,was exclusively controlled by Iran. Hezbollah, wanted independence and to act for their own agenda therefore there major funding is coming from somewhere else. Syria has been trying to control Lebanon forever and have usually had a great amount of success at the cost of Sunni and Shiites. Lebanon has always paid the price. Syria likes Lebanon to be controlled by the "Christians".
At this very moment in time, there is this need to create an enemy that gives ligitimate reasoning for us to stay at war. In doing so, a collective amnesia takes place of proxy wars.  That is where the focus needs to be.
Hey, you edited while I was busy writing.
So, Israel cutting off electricity and bulldozing the housing like they have before won't work?
