I don't share your degree of cynicism. If we look at the eight (8) year reigns of Clinton and Reagan, two enormously popular presidents, you at least see two men who accomplished certain policy goals and who exercised reasonably good judgment in Foreign policy.

OK, so we got Grenada and Bosnia, instead of Vietnam and Iraq.

And Libya, and the Marine barracks in Lebanon.  And Haiti, and Somalia.  And the first WTC bombing, and the USS Cole, and the attacks against the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the Khobar towers bombings.    And oil-for-food.  And cruise missile strikes against aspirin factories in the Sudan and empty tents in Afghanistan.  And don't forget Jimmy Carter's masterpiece of free-lance diplomacy on behalf of President Clinton, the "Agreed Framework".

And we think a new set of actors in the White House will overcome the group think, and other built in obstacles to common sense, how?

Was that a rhetorical question?  Cuz I'm basically agreeing with you.  Kinda.

Alumbrado -> RE: Lies repeated and repeated and repeated... (5/28/2008 11:22:14 PM)

Totally rhetorical, I appreciate that you got my point.

Yeah, and Gas cost a buck a gallon.

Because the dollar wasn't worthless.

The 1st WTC bombing is probably not the best example, either, as the culprits have been caught, put on trial, and imprisoned with due process and equal protection of the law, which makes you wonder why Bush isn't able to do the same thing with the 9/11 planners and attackers, and needs to violate the law himself.

Torture is a crime.

Spying on people without a warrant is a crime.

Between Criminal Spying and Criminal Torture and a Worthless Dollar, and Bill Clinton?

Overall, I preferred Clinton.

You faithless bastard.....

Surely you haven't adopted the position that the US Executive can't be upgraded over GWB?

Alumbrado -> RE: Lies repeated and repeated and repeated... (5/29/2008 8:35:27 AM)

A lot of our problems aren't going to be solved until we get better people.... trouble is, none of them want the job.[;)]

Irishknight -> RE: Lies repeated and repeated and repeated... (5/29/2008 10:18:09 AM)

Wasn't it Mark Twain who said something to the effect that anyone qualified for the job was smart enough not to want it?

I like Vonnegut's better...

Sanity -> RE: Lies repeated and repeated and repeated... (5/29/2008 4:18:58 PM)

Look at all the current anti-Bush threads as to the whys of that one. The Clintons weren't liked much more than W and there were probably as many wild conspiracy theories surrounding them...

Who in their right mind would want that freaking job. Keep us safe and keep the energy running etc while pleasing all the nutjobs, and Congress too.

Yeah... fuck that.

I don't think you're following the argument very well.

On the question of whether he can be upgraded or not, let's just say I'm prepared to be disappointed.

farglebargle -> RE: Lies repeated and repeated and repeated... (5/29/2008 6:11:59 PM)

I think it's clear evidence that the Republic is failed, and we should fall back to our States' Constitutions.

Think of all the money we'll save not paying Federal Employees!

Clinton left office with an approval rating at 65%, the highest end of office rating of any President since World War II.

Sorry, but your facts are off.

Irishknight -> RE: Lies repeated and repeated and repeated... (5/29/2008 7:42:28 PM)

I think that is slightly missated.  It should be that 65% approved of Clinton leaving office.  Seriously, polls are flawed.  The best president, not this one, could have approval ratings of 15 in polls and the worst could have 80%.  It just says that they asked the right people to get the result they want.
My brother and I were both approached by poll takers during the early part of the war.  They asked, "Do you support the war?"  Both of us are exmilitary and we answered yes.  The poll takers put away their pads and said "We can't use your answers."  The funny thing is, we were living in different states at the time.  Since then, I don't listen to polls.

Sanity -> RE: Lies repeated and repeated and repeated... (5/29/2008 8:44:02 PM)

That's not quite the whole truth. From your link:

quote:

As he was leaving office, a CNN/USA TODAY/Gallup poll revealed only 45% said they'd miss him. While 55% thought he "would have something worthwhile to contribute and should remain active in public life", 68% thought he'd be remembered for his "involvement in personal scandal", and 58% answered "No" to the question "Do you generally think Bill Clinton is honest and trustworthy?". 47% of the respondents identified themselves as being Clinton supporters. 47% said he would be remembered as either "outstanding" or "above average" as a president while 22% said he would be remembered as "below average" or "poor".

The Gallup Organization published a poll in February 2007 asking respondents to name the greatest president in U.S. history; Clinton came in fourth place, capturing 13% of the vote. In a 2006 Quinnipiac University poll asking respondents to name the best president since World War II, Clinton ranked 3% behind Ronald Reagan to place second with 25% of the vote. However, in the same poll, when respondents were asked to name the worst president since World War II, Clinton placed 1% behind Nixon and 18% behind George W. Bush to come in third with 16% of the vote.

Besides, if the Clintons had really been as popular as you believe it wouldn't even be a contest for them today, it would be a cake walk.

You are missing the point, probably b/c you don't want to see it.
