I have my own definition of what it is to apprentice under a dom/domme, but I was wondering what other peoples are.
Am I comepletely on my ownin my definition? What would you want from your apprentice?
Anyway, I'd appreciate any input I can get on this.

I'm going to say that a slave apprenticeship, irrespective how experienced she is, with me in my home, is her mandatory 30 days minimum probationary period. In this time she learns about us (the good, the bad and the horrendous ~ like confronting a grizzly without his teeth before he has 3 cupsd of coffee in the morning). It's a time of both parties assessing each other before a final decision is made.

A Dominant Apprentiiceship is probably closer to an entensive mentoring program. I'd assume thet the apprentice is already a Dominant and was born thataway, so his apprenticeship mostly pertains in the basics about finding, choosing and training/dealing with a sub/slave. Added to that, there is all the interesting BDSM topics he may be trained in and their safety requirements.

I'm going to be interested to also see what transpires on this thread.

It would be kinda helpful if you gave us your definition of apprentice.

For me an apprentice is someone taken under to learn a skill or trade or way of life, usually a process that takes years or decades. It's not a mentorship in that it's more directly tutoring and teaching on a practical level.

OscarHargraves -> RE: apprentice (10/24/2005 7:09:32 AM)

In my opinion an apprentice is someone who is 'learning the skills of the trade'. That means that an apprentice Dom is being taught the skills of being a good Dom. He learns safety, equipment, courtesies and respect. He would learn how to handle a Sub and when to listen to the Sub too. He should be taught this by a Dom he knows and respects. He would also learn what it is that he personally is seeking in his Submissive and many of the tricks to bring these things out in her.

A Sub on the other hand could apprentice under either another Sub or a Dom or both. Again this should be someone that she knows and trusts.

(The use of gender in my examples is my own preferance and does not mean to exclude other gender matches.)

Odd, I instantly thought somebody has been watching too much television.

Usually an "apprentice" sort of thing is a small contract. Most I know use them for 60-90 days then say goodbye forever, unless of course both parties then want to pursue a relationship that is more mental.

thanx for the input.

My def is this:
The apprentice enters into an agreement that the master will teach him/her the trade. In return for the teachings, the apprentice basically becomes a slave to the master. The master is free to abuse this relationship as he/she sees fit. The apprentice obeys in all things. No question. In return, he/she learns the trade.
This is my understanding of the old school guild style apprenticeships. Apprentices were never treated well. They had been given a great privelege in being taught by a master in the trade, and were not allowed to forget it.

Other than the "becomes a slave to the master" part it sounds fine to me. A master/slave relationship is very different than a master/apprentice relationship.

Heh, I've been resisting the temptation to say "YOU'RE FIRED!". oops ;-)

(I'm not directing that at you sub4hire just quoting you for point of reference)

All apprenticeship programs basically consist of formal theoretical instruction (classroom, etc.) along with practical experience under the supervision of a mentor or journeyworker. The formal instruction can be from an outside source, or a specific planned teaching time by the same journeyworker.

The exact details based on industry or trade, and from employer to employer. The basic premise is the same though and would apply.

One of the cornerstones of all apprenticeships is it is tailored specifically to the needs of the employer - ie: Master/Dom/Domme.

If Em you are basing this on a conventional trade apprenticeship, you are right. However I rarely relate to the mundane world unless it is necessary. My apprenticeships are very much like an intence mentoring, and in fact aprenticeships in the world or magick/sorcery includes years of mentoring after the aprentice has been pased worthy for journeymanship. And no I do not refer to computer games I refer to life and the lifestyle I live in this area.

Archer -> RE: apprentice (10/25/2005 6:32:38 AM)

Well an apprentice would be different from a slave in the begining in that the goal of the training is different. and the service given and recieved is not a personal thing but tuition for the learning.

My new boi is really in the apprentice catagory, eventually my boi will become a Daddy and then will no longer be as directly in my service. However, the relationship that is formed will continue in a different form, much like the shift in relationship between a parent and a child shifts when the child becomes an adult.
