For those who don't know, the game is similar to spades or 66 but uses a special deck and is a few orders of magnitude more complex.
It all started in a basement room in Brookpark, Ohio. The sons went off and got married, but they always came back. Grampa and I had the workshop, but it was time for something else. And this actually started before the workshop thing. When I got big enough to even play cards at all I was bade to join the 'Men'.
One of my Uncles taught me how to arrainge my cards so I know how much meld I have. And if you put it back together right it helps on not reneging.
I was going to say trhat after four plays Grampa would know what is in everybody's hand, but the is not entirely accurate. Once he saw all four suits played he knew. I am not all that good, but I will accept a challenge.
Last time I played this game with any severity it was with a family. Mom and I would be on one team and the kids on the other. Y'know even when they got like 80 meld we whooped theire ass. I don't think there was one time that me and the olady could not finesse the last trick. That's two points.
In the freezout version, if you don't take in 20 in tricks (in double deck) you lose your meld. See meld is like rummy, you got your marriages, runs, kings or queens whatever around but that does not necessarily make for good playing cards.
Grampa was a trip. the only time he ever raised his voice to me was after a hand of pinochle. Nobody can say shit as long as the hand is in play. That is called board talk by some, and it is undesirable, and against the basic rules of the game.
But after the hand "Why did you plat the fucking queen, plat a king dammit, he didn't have any aces (speaking of the person sitting to my left). And then you lost the point in the next trick !" He was good, I would have to say a master at it.
It works best with four people using a double deck. But we have played it with six, it's just three partnerships. We have (not the family) actually played it with seven. We figured it out, and these people were psychopaths, that the low bidder was 'bought' by the high bidder.
Last person I introduced to this game in the beggining was like "Umm OK" and within an hour he said "Cmon, it's your deal, deal".
