Ethics or guilt; how do you decide?

If you decide prior to do something whether or not it is ethical, then obviously it is a question of ethics. If you only begin to think about it afterwards, then guilt is being brought into the matter.

I can see that guilt could be a reason to reassess, but do you think that retrospect is always due to guilt? I think that some may also use ethics in retrospect, in order to try to justify an action, but I am doubtful either is limited to one or the other. I’ve been trying to think of an example to use, that wouldn’t cause a detour from the main topic; as of yet, it’s not happening.
