Copyright deal could toughen rules governing info on iPods, computers http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=541740 OTTAWA -- The federal government is secretly negotiating an agreement to revamp international copyright laws which could make the information on Canadian iPods, laptop computers or other personal electronic devices illegal and greatly increase the difficulty of travelling with such devices. ----- Taking your laptop into the US? Be sure to hide all your data first http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/may/15/computing.security Last month a US court ruled that border agents can search your laptop, or any other electronic device, when you're entering the country. They can take your computer and download its entire contents, or keep it for several days. Customs and Border Patrol has not published any rules regarding this practice, and I and others have written a letter to Congress urging it to investigate and regulate this practice. But the US is not alone. British customs agents search laptops for pornography. And there are reports on the internet of this sort of thing happening at other borders, too. You might not like it, but it's a fact. So how do you protect yourself? ----- This is some pretty scary shit. Seriously! I can think of dozens of cases in which I would not want some schmuck agent to have access to all the data I may be carrying. The most obvious cases are trade secrets, personal journals, and other private texts. But I may also have other data too - stuff like mp3s I ripped myself, some nude pics of my slave, etc. Some things are data of a nature that I just don't need millions of eyes gazing upon it. And who will protect me from the misuse of my data by said schmuck agent for the government? Uh huh! Well, be warned... [8|]
