Its an annual fee DA, for having "any equipment capable of receiving television pictures" (meaning a lot more than a TV set)! The money raised funds the BBC, allegedly. If you dont pay then you get a fine and a criminal prosecution along the lines of a felony in the US, including jail time (if they can find any room to put you). You only pay once, regardless of whether you have one or two hundred sets of equipment. And no, no background check or waiting period - but when you buy a TV here, the store takes your details and passed them to the authorities. E
