How come, if as the ad says "its all in the database" as to who has and who hasnt got a TV licence, I get yet another dork at my door today, asking to see my TV licence and getting all hot and bothered when I tell him I'm busy working and he should leave me alone, get on his phone and check the database?

He's getting hot and bothered either because he feels wonderfully frustrated, or horribly frustrated, that you are preventing him from seeing your license by quoting the stupid ad.

Perhaps Kitten, but I cant help but think that its because he thinks he's some superior being vested with the full authority of the Queen who ought to be authorised to have me shot for so much as looking him in the eye.

If its "all in the database", how come they visit twice in such a short time in the poorest postcode in this town I wonder? Answer - because everyone in this postcode is a good for nothing layabout scrounger or criminal of course.

Whats amazing is, that I pay by monthly direct debit for my licence - and presumably thats "in the database" too.

Now, if I didnt work from home - would I now be on a suspect list as I hadnt been checked? Or am I already on the suspect list for not kowtowing to this bespectacled little geek jumped up would be Bavarian corporal?

well, all us transgender types have to have a TV licence DA.

a black and white one is cheaper, but then you have to wear polka dot dresses all the time, so most get a colour licence which allows you to wear whatever.

Do you remember a few years ago, the advert on television was of a white van sharking around peaceful neighbourhood at nights, equipped with a special television detecting radar, so that non-payers could be circumvented?

The TV Licensing Authority is still using the same scare tactics it used twenty years ago: it's laughable :-). Don't let the bastards get you down, you're doing the right thing. Right on, LadyE  .

Labor should campaign on getting rid of that stupid tax. It would make them immensely popular.

Thats the thing though Kitten - they expect to come here I bet, and find
a) the ignorant and the elderly, who they can scare the wits out of for kicks
b) the aggressive and violent, who they can show their "authoritah" on

And when they find someone out of place here, like me, they get all confused and their day is ruined.

Labour are bringing in more unpopular taxes than the TV license. Stealth taxes seems to be the name of the game with Gordon.

Ellen, as funny as the comment above is, and as amusing as it would be to see you in black and white polkadots- esp with a matching slip, seriously - what the hell is a TV license? Ya'll need a license to own a television set? Is there a background check? Fingerprinting? Five day waiting period? I mean shit, I can buy a handgun at a flea market - you need a TV permit?

You get charged a tax (per TV I believe); they go around sniffing the LOs with their fancy van.

Its an annual fee DA, for having "any equipment capable of receiving television pictures" (meaning a lot more than a TV set)! The money raised funds the BBC, allegedly.

If you dont pay then you get a fine and a criminal prosecution along the lines of a felony in the US, including jail time (if they can find any room to put you).

You only pay once, regardless of whether you have one or two hundred sets of equipment. And no, no background check or waiting period - but when you buy a TV here, the store takes your details and passed them to the authorities.

Does the money go to the government or to the BBC?

To the Glorious Leaders of course, who by wise consideration and compassionate dispensation decide what the BBC will be granted.

If the store passes on your details Lady E, then why are these guys being paid to go door to door as opposed to already having your address in their database?

And what happens if you move, and take your equipment with you? How do you reregister your license?
