Two guys are walking down a dark alley when a mugger approaches them and demands their money. They both grudgingly pull out their wallets and begin taking out their cash. Just then, one guy turns to the other, hands him a bill, and says, "Hey, here's that $20 I owe you."

If you lend someone $20 and you never see them again it was probably worth it

Then, technically, that would be an investment.  Besides, if you go a lifetime without seeing someone (who you thought was really annoying) after you loaned then $20, that is a hell of a lot better than loaning them $20 for gas...they won't get to far then!
