I was going to ask this in the "songs you hate" thread, but didn't want to hijack so I created this new thread. I'm curious as the why it's such a hated song.  Personally, I love it, it helped me when I lost my favorite uncle suddenly. I called the radio stations to play it, but they wouldn't. Even the Oldies stations said that they don't play that song anymore. What 'da dealio??

Cat Stevens - Seasons in the Sun lyrics:

goodbye to you my trusted friend
we´ve known each other since we
were nine or ten
together we´ve climbed hills and trees
learned of love and abc´s
skinned our hearts and
skinned our knees

goodbye my friend it´s hard to die
when all the birds are singing
in the sky
now that spring is in the air
pretty girls are everywhere
think of me and i´ll be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climbed were
just seasons out of time

goodbye papa please pray for me
i was the black sheep of the family
you tried to teach me right from wrong
too much wine and too much song
wonder how i got along

goodbye papa it´s hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky
now that the spring is in the air
little children everywhere
when you see them i´ll be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone
we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like
the seasons have all gone, yeah

goodbye michelle my little one
you gave me love and helped
me find the sun
and every time that i was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on
the ground

goodbye michelle it´s hard to die
when all the birds are singing in
the sky
now that the spring is in the air
with the flowers everywhere
i wish that we could both be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the stars we could reach
were just starfish on the beach

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the stars we could reach
were just starfish on the beach

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone

all our lives we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climb
were just seasons out of time

Awww... girls, take joy in the little things.  Like sunshine and rainbows, stray kitties that give you unconditional affection, laughing babies, and the fact that you have an internet connection that lets you meet up with good friends, even if you've never met face to face.

Uhhhh.... Cat Stevens?   He had NOTHING to do with this mess of a song (sorry ladies) except maybe have the bad taste to record it.   It was written by Rod McKuen (which see under:  Horribly bad American Poets), and based on a Jacque Brel (which see under:  Hugely overrated French mawkish songwriters) song called "The Dying Man".  It was recorded by The Kingston Trio in 1963 but was a commercial failure, and recorded again by the Beach Boys in 1965.  Thanks to God's ever-provident hand, this recording was never released.  Terry Jacks, a back-up singer for the Beach Boys, rewrote some of the lyrics and recorded it in the version that, in 1974, was released and became one of the greatest one-hit wonders of all time (#30 on the MTV OHW list).

The lyrics that Jacks rewrote took out Brel's references to suicide (leaving the death of the singer ambiguous) and references to failed marriages, infidelity and drug use (oh those French are SO MUCH FUN!)  Instead we get lines like "starfish on the beach" and "seasons = hills" (how, exactly, does THAT work?).

I hate this damn song.   The fact that in certain circumstances it gets me all blubbery I hate even more.

"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?"
Pooh nodded thoughtfully.
"It's the same thing," he said.

OMG HATE!!  Like HATE is not a strong enough term for my stratospheric HATE of this song, and the g-d Terry Jacks lyrics that are going through my head AT THIS MOMENT.

And I will happily get all weepy over a Jacques Brel song, so there!

I think it was the song playing in the background when Dr. Kevorkian was advertising his euthanasia 'death counseling' practice on TV in Michigan. Based upon marketing studies  conducted at the time, the campaign generated a 28.5%  increase in clients; 92%  of which cited this song as reason.

Thanks, Potty, now I won't be able to get the gd thing out of my head.

ok ok.. here's the KIngston Trio version:

Rod McKuen/Jacques Brel

Adieu, Emile, my trusted friend, we've known each other since we were nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills and trees, learned of love and A B Cs, skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Adieu, Emile, it's hard to die when all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that the Spring is in the air
Pretty girls are ev'rywhere. Think of me and I'll be there.

Chorus:
We had joy. We had sun. We had seasons in the sun, but the hills we would climb were just seasons out of time.

Adieu, Papa, please pray for me. I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong. Too much wine and too much song, wonder how we got along.
Adieu, Papa, it's hard to die when all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that the Spring is in the air
Little children ev'rywhere. When you see them, I'll be there.

(Chorus)

Adieu, Francoise, my trusted wife, without you I'd have had a lonely life.
You cheated lots of times but then, I forgave you in the end though your lover was my friend.
Adieu, Francoise, it's hard to die when all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that spring is in the air
With your lovers ev'rywhere; just be careful, I'll be there.

All our lives we had fun. We had seasons in the sun, but the hills we would climb were just season out of time.

Adieu, Emile. Adieu, Papa. Adieu, Francoise.

All our lives, we had fun. We had seasons in the sun, but the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time.
All our lives, we had fun. We had seasons in the sun, but the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach.
