You can have the majority of the top of the bench pad covered with a layer of 2 inches of foam and just add another inch of thickness layered up by the head. Vinyl stretches so its not really an issue. It might just look a little odd.

Heh, i haven't actually sewn anything since Home Ec in seventh grade or so... i'd just figure out a way to rivet that sumbitch! [:D]
Actually, i'd either stretch the vinyl over it as suggested, or upholster it as two separate pieces, depending on how large a difference there was between the two thicknesses.

Still haven't thought of that other thing. Anything's possible in the mornings... it may have been related to one of my own projects instead.

Phin,
i discovered my passion for making my own toys a few years ago and i encourage anyone interested to give it a shot. im actually drawing up plans for a spanking bench myself. anyway, since your not near too many stores id say your best bet is to google woodworking supplies or something like that, and request several catalogs. hell the catalogs have a much wider variety of tools, hardware, books, etc than any store will have in stock, and moreover the prices are a hell of alot lower. try checking out fine woodworking magazine or their site; they have great articles and ads for catalogs in the back.

When i made mine, To add extra padding for the head area , i took the foam pad and cut it 6 inches short of the end of the bench. Attahed the vinyl covering with long tacks. Then folded the vinyl back, like you would a bed spread. Took 2 pieces of foam on top of each other, then took the vinyl and went over them to the end and tacked it.

I use marine grade vinyl as it is thicker the standard vinyl and much more durable. I cut my foam so it is slightly larger then the base piece of wood that it rests on. I use heavy duty staples to attach my vinyl to the wood base on one side of the bottom and then compress the foam as I attach the other side with staples. Shape the foam before you cover it with the vinyl because if you use slightly rounded edges, it will give the finished cushion a nicer and more "professional looking" shape.

Here is a link to some of the padding detail. The tacks were used just for decoration.
