I am building a spanking bench, I got everything together to do the actual build, but I cant figure out how to upholster it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Phin

With padding, leather and upholstery tacks.  Or was there more to your question?  Check out your local fabric store that has an upholstery section and see if they have books to browse through.

Norm Abram did a window bench, I believe there's an online video here for ideas.

sorry didnt realize I was being vague...

I am more looking for a step by step explanation... never did any upholstering before. all the sites I check they want an arm and a leg for foam, like $80 for enough to do the bench

Here is a page with a lot of mini-courses on upholstery.  Scroll down past the advertising.

After you read some of the articles on the basics on that page, here is one for upholstering an ottoman, which may come close.

Vinyl is easy to clean and you can pick it by the yard at most larger fabric shops.  I know leather is the preferred but this is much easier to keep clean.  Get some Monel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monel) staples for your staple gun and go to town.

Seriously Phin, any sewing/fabric stores near you?  The ones around here have at least a fourth of the store devoted to upholstery and supplies.

I dont even have a Micheal's within 45 miles and with gas prices the way that they are, I cant just run up to Raleigh on a whim. I was up there this weekend, but I took care of the items that I knew the deal with....

this town is deprived...

Not sure if this will help or not... My Daddy made a spanking bench recently and covered it with a black faux fur... probably not the easiest for clean up but certainly comfortable for me when I'm on it for a bit. Don't have to worry about getting sweaty and sticking to it.

The padding he used was simple foam batting. Probably could be thicker, but it's not terrible. I would say though that having better padding would be the one thing I would like to see improved on it.

As for "upholstery" really all we did was pull the fabric tight and secure it with a staple gun. Nothing fancy.

Good luck to you.

Fake fur makes a lot of people break out in a rash (including yours truly).  How much foam do you need Phin?  By the way, I'm sure you've thought of it, but make sure you knock off the sharp edges of the wood pieces before upholstering, perhaps with a router fit with a round-over bit.

Here is a piece of foam, "dense foam batting", 22 x 36 x 4 inches, for $17.  I don't know what the compression on that is like (there's a video on that page in the description section), but you could cut it in half and get two pieces of 11x36x4, double it up, and get one 8inch thick piece.  If it has 50% compression, then you would end up with padding 4 inches thick.

Good quality high density foam is pricey. Cheap out on that item and you'll probably end up regretting it. Well... you might not but your bottom's knees and elbows might.

I use marine grade vinyl as it is thicker the standard vinyl and much more durable. I cut my foam so it is slightly larger then the base piece of wood that it rests on. I use heavy duty staples to attach my vinyl to the wood base on one side of the bottom and then compress the foam as I attach the other side with staples. Shape the foam before you cover it with the vinyl because if you use slightly rounded edges, it will give the finished cushion a nicer and more "professional looking" shape.

And I used to cover my base unit with a velcro attached cloth cover. Loop side on the cloth-so it would not ball up in the washing machine.

Are you anywhere near Mooresville? There's a company there called Ritchie Foam & Mattress that i've done business with before... seemed like they had fair prices, and a much larger selection than any craft store.

What kind of design are you using? That will have a major impact on how you upholster it.

Some people like upholstery tacks; personally i prefer to staple-gun the material to the underside of the piece wherever possible; sometimes this requires using captive bolts to put it together.

Short version is that you never want to see the edge of the material- it should always be folded back on itself, or folded over the piece and hidden on the backside. Don't cut your fabric until after the foam is in place.

i usually secure one whole edge, moving from the center out, holding tension on it as i go. Stop about an inch (half-inch for smaller pieces) from the edge) Pull it tight across to the opposite edge, and fasten that at the center, then tension it towards both corners (clamps help... i assume you have some clamps ) and fasten from the center out. Then do each side in the same way. Always work from the center out, because the only place you can really hide extra material is in the corners. Corners are usually folded over on to one side, rather than being compressed in the middle... easy to demonstrate, hard to explain

Couple other thoughts-

If you can scrounge up a cheap mattress, they're usually a solid block of foam. Same with couch cushions, and large upholstered chairs. These can often be obtained dirt cheap off of Craigslist as long as you have a pickup truck and a friend to help carry it. Unzip or cut open the cushion, Febreze the foam, leave it out in the sun for a couple afternoons.

If you think foam is expensive, you'd better be sitting down if you start looking for leather to upholster with! i use vinyl (pleather!) for furniture, but there is a huge variation in quality, so make sure you see it in person. i think i paid $9/yard for the stuff i used on my bench, and that was 5 or 6 years ago... very pleased with it, though.

And... there was something else, but i'm impressed i even got that much down at 8 am. Ah well. Have fun!

Dave, good information, thanks, any chance you have remembered the "something else"

One question that will probably be a little retarded.... lets say that I wanted to add aditional padding for her head, I assume that I would have to sew an expansion into the vinyl cloth, right? If I do... no aditional padding... I am already stepping WAYYYY outside my comfort zone with the upholstery...
