I'd like to hear about others' experiences- large or small, public or private, individually or as part of an organization- working to maintain or expand the civil rights of us kinky folks. Suggestions for activities welcome.

NCSF and Woodhull

My activities have been mostly observing and occasionally contributing.  I've been to board meetings and dinners and fundraisers, but I'm not the activist personality myself, much more the organizer/supporter/education type.

It may or may not count, depending on your view, but I'm a registered Libertarian and contribute to the party whenever I can. Beyond that, I give money to organizations like JREF... because rather than fight for kinky rights in particular, I'm a freedom across the boards person.

I have contributed funds and supported fund drives for the NCSF numerous times. :)

when you start looking for it: NCSF starts popping up everywhere sex related.
walk into any porn store and many of the DVD's and Sex Toys will have a "We Support NCSF" somewhere on the box. I like it because it covers many of my different concerns on both a personal and proffesional level.

Cheers

We just live our lives openly and honestly. Doesn't sound like much, I know, but we believe that before people in general are going to be excepting of us and our lifestyle they have to be able to see that it isn't that leather clad, chain weilding crap in porn movies and we aren't serial rapists or murders like you see on the news. We're excepted with open arms by our neighbors, and believe me, you don't get more 'nilla then them... One is a preacher and another is a deeply religious (get this... ) mormon. She finally found a way to wrap her head around us as a "couple", she sees us a like mormons minus the religion.... lmao. Such a sweet woman.

We just live our lives, openly and with honesty, and hope others get the quiet message that there is nothing intrinsically bad having different proclivities to others and feeling able to fulfil them and stay balanced and happy.

Having spent many a year as a lobbyist i now put most of my energies into life at home and disability issues.

I'm developing a charity dealing with social stigma and the human rights of the individual. The charity is run like a fringe theatre and we small scale fringe productions on primarily social issues. We're working on one of my plays at the moment which has a BDSM theme with a view to putting it out in wider society to explode a few myths and some of the stigma wider society attaches to BDSM and D/s.

I'm trying to promote the term 'intimate lifestyles' and try and bring together an idea to form some sort of SLGBT community (Straight, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) as I feel 'intimate' is a little more honest than 'alternative' (working on the premise that kink is a part of human nature).

However this is just one part of what the charity is about, as it is to do with removing social stigma right across society not just the community, but also for example with regard to homelessness, racial issues, disability, mental illness, ex-offenders, etc.

Civil liberty shouldn't really be conditional but the right of every human being.

"...doesn't sound like much...?"  I think that living openly and honestly as a person with a "(fill in the blank)" sexual lifestyle is the bravest and most effective thing that you can do.

I don't have time for any causes... but if I did the ACLU tops my list.  They seem to defend the little guys rights.

Thank you Lilith. It's not bravery really, it's more laziness... I just don't have the energy to put up a false front... lol Lying has never been my forte'. It's like drinking, I can do, just not very well... and then I forget what I said or did the next day. Easier to just not do either.

And now, for my flame retardant suit time... Honestly... I feel like if you are doing something that you feel you absolutely have to hide, then a part of you feels that what you are doing is wrong on some level. But that's just me and I realize that a lot of people out there don't have the luxury of being in an environment where they can live openly and honestly and I'm sad for them. So maybe, in our own way, we are trying to open doors for those people. Unfortunatly in a town of under 2000 people, there aren't a LOT of doors we can open... unless they all want to move here? lol
