What gets me in the link provided is that they give you a certificate. What about the Dom who has been honing his skills for years, through trial and error, forming his own experience... does a dom like that get a certificate that states how they were overqualified to go through "such and such" training seminar?

From the website I saw, it doesn't look like a bad idea... just bad framing by the marketing guys.

Haha, next they'll have submissives accepting resumes from Dominants... excuse me but what degree did you get?  PhD?  Doctorate?  Oh yes, and that's from a very prestigious boot camp school.  Aha Hrmmm... and you spent lots of time volunteering at this club?  Hrmmmm..  that's quite interesting.  I think your degree and experience can be of use here at True Submissives Incorporated.  [sm=crop.gif][sm=champ.gif][sm=cheering.gif][sm=writing.gif][sm=weightlift.gif][sm=whip.gif][sm=slappy.gif][sm=sm.gif]

As I browse around on Collarme
I'm no longer surprised by the things I see
Where domliness is just an illusion
Tinged with madness and confusion
What becomes of the Doms at boot camp
Who were men but became twue Masters
I know I've got to find some sanity in this mind
Help me please

I see Doms with female subs all around
But for me subs just can't be found
And though my messages get one word longer
It's my pain which is getting much stronger
I search in chatrooms looking for girls
Just need one to light up my world
Hoping and praying for one who will come
And say nice to meet you I need a twue Dom
What becomes of the Doms at boot camp
Who were men but are now real Masters
I know I've got to find some sanity in my mind
Help me please

I'm searching but I don't succeed
For a real Dom there must be some sort of need
All is lost been so long since I had a good ... coffee
All I have is an empty Collarme Inbox
Now what becomes of the Doms at boot camp
Who were men but who are now real Masters
I know I've got to find a sub with not much of a mind
I'll be searching everywhere just to find a female sub I don't scare
I'll be looking every day to find a female sub who isn't fake
Nothing's gonna stop me now, I'll even search through Idaho

with apologies to Jimmy Ruffin

If I was a Dom that went to a seminar like that I'd totally frame the certificate like someone would a PhD. Then put it in my basement dungeon next to the whipping post so if a sub complained I could point to it and say, "Are you the certified Dom here?". Of course, in my imaginings I'm a huge douche as well.

virgini970 -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/29/2008 11:47:12 PM)

MstrVik -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/29/2008 11:56:37 PM)

Bootcamp?? Doesn't sound tempting at all, and seems like a really odd term to choose for something like that - whatever it is... And this about a certificate truly sounds like a joke, and I guess it must be. -

Nothing wrong with getting together for a fun and relaxing time and exchanging ideas. But making money from some people's insecurities is something entirely different, allthough very common for sure. It's nevertheless truly ironic in just this context.

Abraxus -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/30/2008 12:18:41 AM)

I think many new doms can learn creative and different play techniques from such a class as well as gain insightful ideas on rituals and effective communication that they can employ in their own relationships. However, I wouldn't hold up that certificate and say "now that I have taken this 16 hour class I am Dom here me roar".

HalloweenWhite -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/30/2008 3:28:14 AM)

I saw a website  a week or 2 that was for a Domme/Dom bootcamp, I think it was more about how to do impact play etc, less about attitude, which isn't really something that can be taught. It was in the U.S.

DesFIP -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/30/2008 4:23:27 AM)

I looked at the sub boot camp description and am turned off by the mandatory 'processing the pain' course. The assumption that only sadists can be dominant and all subs are pain seekers by itself negates anything else they say IMO. Because not all dominants are sadistic and not all submissives are into pain.

There have been several subs on here that have stated that they received their "training" at some weekend training academy.

Yes and one in particular was willing to share her "spice" and "point" training with us all[image]http://www.collarchat.com/upfiles/smiley/biggrin.gif[/image]................luci

RedMagic1 -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/30/2008 7:27:16 AM)

The Other World Kingdom provides certificates of citizenship for women who complete courses of study there.  I've been to the home of one "Divine Lady" and she had it framed.  She also learned how to use two five-foot singletails, one in each hand.  I can't do that.  I don't see why I should point and laugh if someone is proud of an accomplishment.

I ran across a "Dom" referencing  a dom bootcamp he had attended for 16 hours. WTF?  is that for real?  what about "sub" bootcamp, well, that would be absurd, wouldnt it?  I think I am going to faint.  Sorry, but I guess I thought a Dominant man was born that way, not created in a  16 hour bootcamp.  What next?

I'll agree that, after looking at the site, their marketing skills suck.  They are designed to pull at the insecurities of those among us who have them.  Same goes for their marketing of their submissive course.  And the whole certificate thing makes me roll my eyes.

That being said...I have no problem with the idea of going to classes and learning more.  One of the things I've developed through 25 years of going to mandatory continuing education classes is a pretty good ability to be able to take what is sensible and process it and incorporate it into doing what I do as a professional health care provider and setting aside that which is bullshit.  Because of that, I've attended demos and classes on BDSM techniques and D/s interactions and have been able to do the same thing.  Stuff that seemed unrealistic?  Process it, talk about it with submissives to get their point of view, talk it over with other dominants to get their point of view and then, apply my own filters to it and make a final decision as to whether it really IS ridiculous or has some merit.

I've said it before...I'll stop learning when I am either too jaded or too dead to learn anymore.

Personally, I think its a bad idea to laugh at anyone who can do something you can't... ESPECIALLY if it involves two single tails.

Missokyst -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/30/2008 8:35:31 AM)

When ever I read these threads I am quite convinced that many people truly believe dominants are born dominant, jump out of the womb and slap their doctors, rope the nurse with their umbilical cord, grab the scapel, cut and yell out "I AM DOM!"
Personality and skill are not the same thing.  One is attitude, the other is activity.  If people can pick that up somewhere without breaking things along the way, fabulous.  A weekend surely will not make a dom (certificate not withstanding), but it might help someone with those leanings learn a trick or two.  And maybe it will inspire some creativity.

I think that a LOT can be learned from others, both dominant and submissive. I would never discourage someone from seeking knowledge. I think that the well of wisdom of those who HAVE been doing this for the long haul is one that is not drawn from often enough. I don't however, think that a weekend boot camp will "make" a Dominant...no matter what gets printed on the certificate.

There are some excellent dominants, for example Midori, who charge a fee for presentations.  There are a number of others, like myself, who don't.  Well, I'm retired now and one of the reasons for that retirement is I was getting tired of the attitude of people who presumed that I should be overjoyed for speaking to their group.  One time Libby offered a bit of advice to some event organizers and was told "what are you complaining about?  We paid your room and airfare."  That's an extreme example, but it did happen and that sort of subsconsious attitude is wide spread.

BDSM seems to be almost unique in this.  Libby recently learned to SCUBA dive.  She paid an instructor.  I'd been living in Boston so my pistol skills have deteriorated.  I spent several hours with an NRA instructor.  Paid.  The same for Libby's art courses and my welding classes.

Libby got a card for her SCUBA and I got a certificate from the NRA, but these didn't have any impact on our learning.  In this notestream, people seem to be thinking that the offering of a certificate somehow invalidates the concept.  To me, it's clear.  Some people want tangible evidence of their work; some don't.  More people will take the course if a certificate is offered, so offer one.  After all, a certain critical mass is needed for the business to make a living.

akisha -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/30/2008 9:20:47 AM)

I know up here the Leather community hosts a "Kink Kamp" every summer and They teach different techniques on flogging etc etc etc.

I think It's a great idea and according to a freind that attended it's informative and alot of fun.

I think a boot camp or weekend seminar for both Dominant types and submissive types would be an excellent idea.

To the OP, just because a man or woman is born with a dominant personality does NOT mean they are a Dominant. Wanting to learn and improve themselves as a Dominant in a D/s and or S&M dynamic is a good thing, not something to scoff at in my opinion.

I think any desire to learn and improve yourself is a good thing, but hey, again that's just me.

CalifChick -> RE: Excuse me, "Dom bootcamp??" (5/30/2008 9:31:05 AM)

I went to the Submissive Survival Course put on the same weekend as Dom Bootcamp by BDSM Mentors, and I know a lot of people that have attended one or both courses, as well as others put on by the same group (fireplay, needleplay, choosing a slave, etc.).  The "certificate" part is really a non-issue, I can't even remember if I got one... it might be in my binder.  Maybe look past that part of it and see the value in what they are teaching.

Someone that I know went to the course just to be there at the same time I was, to help me process what was going on. He went into Dom Bootcamp thinking he wouldn't really get much out of it other than meeting people and networking.  At the lunch break he came up to me and said, "all I can say is WOW"... he got FAR more out of it than he thought he would.

Some of it is hands on, some of it is discussion.  I find it a bit amusing to see so many people denigrating a course they haven't even attended, just based on the web page.

Heh... probably why I replied using your post.  You don't jump on the bandwagon.  I generally skim over posts now and pick out people who are unfailingly fair in their assessment.
Personally if I were dominant I would love learning from JW, or Midori, or anyone who learned from watching them.
The idea of dominance by osmosis seems too fiction based for my taste.
<g>
I almost always agree with your thoughts.
