No it doesn't give them incentive to perform their duties.

Of course it does......political aberrations remain in the memory as a result of a shorter election span, which lends toward gimmicks in election year being less effective.

It gives them incentive to campaign and raise money instead of being in Washington doing their jobs.

Only where you allow this to happen.

Very true.
Speaking of which, shouldn't that stuff be reported more?
I'd like to see a magazine that focuses on Senators as much as some magazines focus on celebrities.
A glossy tattle-tale style magazine for politics would be sooo cool.

What about an election every 2 years, rather than limits? That way, there's more of an incentive to perform, and those performing are kept in post.

And this is bad how?

Following your logic, why do we need representation at all? [8|]

I am so sick of "CHANGE - We Can Believe In" and "Yes We Can" I could puke!

There's a developing story that Obama got elected to the Illinois Congress in 1996 by getting his three Democratic opponents' (including popular incumbant Alice Palmer's) petitions to have their names on the ballot invalidated, so Obama was the only Democrat on the ballot in a heavily Democratic district.

Do you know how much Billary and McCain have spent so far?

Yes.

Repeal the 17th Ammendment, go back to State governments selecting their Senators. Right now the people of the State of Georgia have representation. However the State of Georgia has less representation in DC than France does. Nobody up there is operating on behalf of the State Governments, instead they have to play around with making sure they do things that are popular with the people rather than voting in the interests of the States. We have representation for the people of the state they are called Representatives. Changing Senators would tend to happen every once in awhile when the Governor's office shifts hands.

Exactly right. As previously mentioned, perhaps limiting campaigning to the month preceding the election, in conjunction with public financing of the campaigns, is the way to go.

When West Virginians look around and see Robert Byrd's name on everything in this state, including high schools, they think, wow what a great job he's doing for the state.  But what he's really doing is raking in the pork without a real plan for the future.
Living off the government is not a long term plan.

Exactly, and I believe on the News last week they said he's *90 years old!*
I believe in term limits and age limits for anyone serving in the Congress or the White House.
It should be "65 and out."

MissSepphora1 -> RE: You want real change in the government? (5/31/2008 12:29:39 PM)

65 and out is a good idea.  But I think there should probably also be a 3 term limit.
That is long enough to do whatever you need to do, or whatever you promised to do.
