Status: offline 		I searchded and came up with nothing pertaining to my actual question, so I will ask it. I am sure someone will be more than happy to chime in with a list of links that tell me what I want to know if I just missed the forum on it all.

Fox got me a book on beginners shibari. It has the basic knots, the general lengths for different designs and all the other beginners bits and pieces I will need to know. It is illustrated and has step by step instructions along with a pretty decent sense of humor about the directions.

My question is, what sort of rope is best for a beginner? Hemp tends to be too rough on the skin, I know that already. Fox's collar is hemp and tying that damn near killed my fingers. I was thinking about using hikers rope but I dont know if starting with something that thick is a positive or a negative while learning. Asthetically, i think the thicker ropes LOOK better, but I want something easy to learn on whether or not its eye catching. I have time to make it pretty later.

So, I ask all the riggers and rope sluts out there... what do you like to use? What did you learn on? Do you have suggestions for a newbie?

The experienced rope-Tops here will have lots of guidance for you. They will most likely tell you it depends on what you want to do as to which type of rope to use.....I don't know enough to tell you much, however, I love the feel of flax and jute.  The smell of hemp sends me to la-la land. Yum! The smell of flax isn't bad either. I'm lucky here in Texas, lots of excellent riggers all over the state. More than a few of them just came back from Shibaricon.  Enjoy your rope journey! I'm so enamored with rope, I prefer rope to be used as my nightly wrist and ankle restraints.

I use three strand rope from http://www.neropes.com/ New England Rope that makes the best sailing line around, you can buy it any West Marine store.

That said, they recomend the nylon line from Home Depot and dye it various colors.  It takes the dye brilliantly and is quite pretty.

I'm going to second David Lawrence's site. I did a couple of ties with him, his hemp rope is boiled and treated until it's sooo soft, but it still has the bite that helps it to hold the tie in place.

As will the bottoms. Here goes.

Shibari and other japanese bondage techniques take a certain amount of dedication and a considerable amount of time to practice. With that said, you may not end up enjoying it - some do, some don't. If I were you, I wouldn't make a huge investment in rope until I was certain that I wanted to continue the practice. We invested very little money on a cotton/nylon  twisted rope I got on close out when a local home store was going out of business. We bought about 300 feet of it.

While we have a couple of Shibari books, it actually do it maybe 1 or 2 times a year. The trial rope I bought is more than sufficient for these sessions. This particular rope gives just a bit, does not become ungodly tight when moist and allowed me to stay in rope for a couple of hours at my heaviest. Ok, right it's not all about the bottom; but if the bottom is bitching and moaning about being super uncomfortable, it's a fun suck for everyone, sadists included.

In short, I'd buy some inexpensive rope to try at first, and then if your interests and desires are sustained by the art, you can invest in more expensive rope.

Status: offline 		My main interest in the ropework is for my photography. Bondagewise, I am neither here not there about it, yet. I wouldnt expect to be skilled enough to do much for a while. I just want something that is easy to tie, while Im taking my baby steps.
The Home depot idea might work, we have a lowes and a HD not far from me.
I also saw a really great deal on some hiking rope at walmart.. which I am considering.
I have noticed that almost every shibari art site I find is mainly female subjects. I have seen VERY few male models for it, even in the demo books. (And no, I didnt get the knottyboys book, this is from a Fem. Dont remember the name off the top of my head, and i dont have it here in Vegas with me) I wonder if Fox and I will be eventualy linked on sites telling people about stuff like this. *purr*  Is it wierd to hope my photos are good enough to eventualy be a reference?

Status: offline 		I like cotton rope but it is hard to find.  Wal-Mart has it but they are often out of stock. Some hardware stores have it.  Nylon is soft but easy to escape from.  Plastic is useless for anything as far as I am conserned.    Just my Opinion but I am sure you will have a lot of different opinions.  Dave

True. Although I wouldn't classify it as shibari, you might find some inspiration at http://www.meninrope.com/.

Unlike Dave1947 I wouldn't recommend cotton. It stretches too much and is too weak for anything advanced.

Status: offline 		Something from the braided nylon or cotton family will work just fine. Cotton clothesline is fairly easy to find, although it's kinda thin at 1/4". Look for braided nylon bigger than that in your local Dom (Home) Depot.

Status: offline 		i saw a picture on a web site some time ago of a woman in a rope dress that really floated my boat.  Unfortunately i didn't save the image to my pc, and subsequent searches for such a picture haven't been fruitful for me.
 
But anyway, the woman had on a dress of rope draped in different lengths and leaving a little skin showing through...but it was really rather modest (though i suppose it wouldn't be if she moved).
 
A/anyone ever make a rope dress for a woman?  How long did it take?  Does it take real rope afcinado to do this?

Status: offline 		I'm a fan of the Knotty Boys and prefer 10mm and 6mm braded nylon in most cases but hemp is good for those who lobe the abrasive bite. Chains are even better using the snap clips in place of knots.

That only explains why some subs would love it. The friction of hemp rope has advantages well beyond liking the abrasive bite by the bottom. Many shibari techiques are simply not safe with less-friction ropes like nylon.

That rope that's thicker, and sort of 'shiney' tends to do well in photographs, both color and black and white. I knew someone who used it and shot with it and published the photos and they looked good.

Start out with the clothesline.  Easy to tie and untie and won't hurt your hands.  It will be a great learning tool.

Once you have a feel for the ties themselves, move up to nylon rope as it will look best in your photos.  Since that is the main purpose of the rope bondage for you, that's my recommendation.

For me, the feel of new jute rope which has a lot of tooth and does not move is the best.  But we do some serious, hard core ties and partial suspensions designed to illicit as much pain in as short amount of time as possible.  Give and slippage would create hazards in those situations.
