Thank you, John, that was lovely.

So, just, you know, THEORETICALLY SPEAKING, what if the US had hardly or no military at all?

For defense, we have a militia with 200 MILLION guns. That's more than all the largest armies put together. Invade us? Haw haw haw haw good luck.

We have DHS keeping us safe with color alerts and airport idiots.

There's the Coast Guard, for when Al Queida or drunken Siberian fisherman cross into our territorial waters.

Maybe we keep a skeleton crew to launch a couple hundred MIRVed nukes, but that's trivial.

SO what do we need a military for?

Well there's the little matter of the Mlitary Industrial Complex and all the political toadies who need to promise jobs to their constituents so they can get elected. That means inventory and since expending inventory on home soil is generally frowned upon that leaves picking fights elsewhere in the world to justify selling the leftover and pre-owned crap to  friends while blowing off the new stuff at whomever has been designated the latest enemy.

Hope this clears things up for you, HK.

When I am Dictator of the World, I will decree that no glass remains half-empty. [8D]

Yeah, but what if all that restless WASP paranoia and Angst could be directed at something meaningful? Like making good beer?

Seriously, Costa Rica manages just fine.

What are you suggesting? That we use a fraction of the resources we'd save not having armed forces to actually provide the stuff we usually fight over to everybody, equally? That's sounding down right comunistical.

Well, call it what you want, just don't take my Little Red Book from me. [;)]

Well, we have now branched out into the pre-emptive business and Iran is becoming a pest, so...

Mass unemployment.[:D]

War is a business.

With little or no army, would countries like China and Russia become more militarily adventerous? If so, it'd just be tough shit for whoever they acted against?

FullCircle -> RE: Imagine there's no Army... it's easy if you try... (6/1/2008 4:11:25 AM)

Sure but it would be an adventure and you could put your domestic stockpile of weapons to use.

Where is your sense of adventure Mr Level?[8|]

See, if we didn't have this big military, all these bloodthirsty righties wouldn't get involved in these foreign adventures, and we could have a real country for ourselves. Sigh. I'm going to bed. Coming?

I must have left it in my sock drawer [:D]

The threat of nukes might indeed hamper some, but I have to wonder if other nations would have an equal sense of adventure, and engage in a game of chicken with us. Let's say we called their bluff, and used our nukes.... who could really be called the winner then? Anyone?

I do see HK's point; it'd be nice to be able to put all that money towards other things.

kittinSol -> RE: Imagine there's no Army... it's easy if you try... (6/1/2008 5:32:14 AM)

The US army is a costly luxury, especially when it's being put to 'good use' like it is now. Get rid of it - just keep a bulk of highly trained people for the purpose of disaster relief. That's the only thing I can see the army is truly useful for.

GreedyTop -> RE: Imagine there's no Army... it's easy if you try... (6/1/2008 5:36:08 AM)

I dunno, KS...some of those guys look pretty damned tasty in the uniforms *grin*

You're born with nothing,
and better off that way,
Soon as you've got something they send someone to try and take it away...

Well, we need a strong standing army, given that we are more or less king of the hill at the moment.....

But; the wanton misuse of  military might; has been in times past, and remains today, one of our most grievious problems.

Agreed, Ron.

Irishknight -> RE: Imagine there's no Army... it's easy if you try... (6/1/2008 6:28:24 AM)

We could do away with a huge standing army if everyone in this country would serve in a reserve force.  In that case, we would not be able to invade other countries at a moment's notice but all of the whiners would have to shoulder their portion of the load.  Being able to call up every man and woman between the ages of 18 and 60 would even make the chinese war machine think twice.
The bonus is that every weekend there would be men and women in uniform for all of us to gaze upon.  Some of the ladies look really tasty in their uniforms too.  Yummy.

That's the thing though... I find uniforms unattractive. A person may be attractive despite the uniform, but a uniform doesn't enhance their beauty. I don't like the little dangly badges and silly hats. Makes them walk funny. Nah, give me a metrosexual anyday [8D] .

No Army?
But then Obama couldn't fight , "genocides in Africa."

KittinSol, that's what Obama said he wants to do if he's elected president, "fight genocides in Africa."
No mention of what he'd do for the U.S. though. Just "change."
Funny he wants to do things for other countries but not for us.
I mean what does "genocides in Africa" have to do with the U.S.?
