mistoferin -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 10:48:06 PM)

No, I haven't always consciously assisted myself. For the first 8 or 9 years that I was involved with BDSM my journey leading up to subspace was more like a frustrating fight. I think that it happened then more as a result of my brain and body overloading but I didn't have the ability to really control it. I knew I loved the feeling but I had no idea how to get there.

How I learned to "help" myself was purely an accident. I was very, very sick and in constant and chronic pain. Some of the coping skills I learned were biofeedback and meditation. It was found that I have an amazingly natural ability to do those things and I got a lot of relief from them. Actually, I had been doing a bit of it on some level already but didn't fully understand the techniques. I should also say that by this time I had already learned that I could mentally pull myself out of a place I didn't want to be.....although I had no understanding of exactly "how".

Anyway, when I started to really learn how to control my pain through these techniques I realized that my efforts took me to a place that felt very similar to subspace. So the next natural progression for me was to "play" with it, if you will, during scenes. It was a slow and bumpy start but eventually I found that I could pretty effectively and consistently give myself the push that was needed to go smoothly without all of the frustration and internal struggle.

The downside to that is that I know the path so well that sometimes I rush to get there and Sir literally will step in and prevent it so that I go on his time frame and not mine. There are also times when we are in a place where the energy in the room will be off that I just can't find the focus that I need and it will take me a long time to get there, if I can at all.....or my subspace experience will be altered in a negative way and I will go for a rather freaky or upsetting ride.

Im actuallly glad that I asked you to go more into it as it supports the theory behind my asking this question in the first place... Im really working not to influence anyones answers and I know everyone has different experiences so Ill wait before I get more into that ... thank you though for both of your answers.

You're welcome. I hope that you and maybe a few others will find it helpful.

MadameXTC -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/3/2008 12:12:38 AM)

humm I guess for me I would say subspace is the same as taking morphine- when you morphine to relieve pain it takes a bit to get working.. You do not realize the effects until your body starts reacting to it. In my experiences of subspace- I am in a scene and my bodies natural endorphines kick in. I feel my body is able to take more physically then it would have taken otherwise. I find that pain is no longer intense, I have a warm feeling that washes over me. My brain becomes dull and extreamly relaxed, at times I cannot speak, only make soft kitten sounds or something of that nature. I am very slow to respond to questions. I feel like my body is jello and cannot hold my own body weight without help. Its like I have entered a comatose state and I experience everything but can react to little. I feel at peace and happy and what I would think a drugged person would feel like. I would say that it is very much like meditation, you are relaxed and focused on one thing- my one thing I am focused on is pleasure in the moment. Subspace does not happen too often for me, but after it does happen.. since my body has gone through so many harmonal changes during it, I need lots of aftercare- After subspace I feel a huge drop in energy and need to get something to drink, sugar to eat, and a blanket to keep me warm. Whenever someones body kicks in like it does during subspace it is always good to take care of the after effects.

leakylee -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/3/2008 1:00:03 AM)

i almost dont know how to explain the it. with whips i know i have to stay still. there isnt much choice. if i move the wrong way there is no stopping a 6 foot peice of leather in mid stream. i have to maintain a bit of conherence for my own safety. it kinda sucks..hehe..

with the knives and needles, it really isnt needed. ok, wise maybe, but.. there is just something about it that triggers my buttons. it isnt about fear really, it just turns me on. sexually it really flips switches. something raw comes out when my skin starts getting peirced. the only thing i know to compare it to is some kind of animalistic energy is released. hence the biting. i tend to do that when the one track mind thing takes over. it is nothing more than a pure sexual response.

hope that helps

I'm looking forward to the specifics about what your research is on.

(fast reply)

I've only been in subspace one time (and I've been playing for a very long time)

Usually when the man and I play hard, an intense session, I end up losing chunks of time during the play...but I dont lose myself, meaning I do not hit subspace. I think I lose bits and pieces simply because everything happens quickly...or better said, one thing blurs into the next and after all is said and done its hard to remember exactly what happened.

To me, that is not subspace.

When I hit subspace that one time, I was being spanked on the ass with different implements. He started of soft, slow and graduated to harder and faster. It was a long session. After a bit of time I still held the position he had me in...but the next thing I knew he was saying my name over and over..softly...It was like I could hear him calling my name but he was so very far away and as he kept saying my name it felt like he was getting closer, and then I could 'focus' again and I saw him, and the room, and my surroundings. And then the feeling was over.

He told me I had been like that for about 20 minutes and he realized I was not making any sounds, no 'ooomps' or 'ahhhs' or 'ouch shit' when he hit me, and so he slowly started backing off until he finally stopped hitting me altogether. I remember none of it.  Bummer heh? (smiles)

MRandme -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/4/2008 2:53:09 AM)

When i am in subspace, i have trouble talking. It's like the higher brain shuts down and i can only react on a primal level -- yes or no questions i can handle, but more than that and i really have to concentrate in order to speak.

i have ADHD. Most of the time it is like there are several channels playing in my head at once. Subspace turns off all the channels but one so that everything seems sharper and more focused.  There aren't any other thoughts in my head but what is happening at the moment.  The rest of the world is gone and i am hyper-focused on that moment and space in time.

i still feel the paddle or the cane or whatever, the pain is still there.  But i am separated from it a bit. In that way it is a bit like a meditative trance. Yet, it is as though every nerve is more alive, and i can feel the slightest sensation and orgasm more easily.

This is part of the reason it is difficult to describe, because seemingly conflicting statements can be true, like  being extremely relaxed, yet energized;

A side note: for some reason, when i am deep in subspace and floating happily, i hum. Weird.  It isn't really a song, just tuneless humming.  my Master says that He likes to hear it because then He knows i am happy.

lizcgirl -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/4/2008 5:47:02 PM)

This topic has me wondering.....
I haven't been in the life long, and I had an experience I couldn't explain, that has never happened before. Master and I were playing for quite a while and I was really getting into it. Next thing I knew, I was laying on the floor after we had finished and couldn't remember what happened. All I remembered about it was I was practically buzzing, like my entire body was a live wire, I remember having an insane amount of energy, but that was about it. He told me things I was screaming on command and I don't remember doing it, and given WHAT I was screaming (it was really out of character) I can't believe I don't remember. Afterwards I was shivering, my entire body seemed to collapse on itself, and it felt like I had been slammed back into my body after an out of body experience. I know that what He said happened really did happen, I had the marks the next morning to prove it, but I couldn't remember it for the life of me. That's not like me at all. I have nothing to compare it to, and it may seem silly to ask, but would that be subspace?

Prismfire -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/4/2008 6:34:43 PM)

As has been mentioned before in this thread subspace has differences for everyone and different experiences of it can be different even for the same person ... It definately sounds to me like it could have been :)

BBWnNC72 -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/4/2008 6:36:29 PM)

i know it is "subspace" after i have been slapped back to reality and the calm i feel.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/5/2008 5:03:30 AM)

for me - i have out of body experiences once i hit subspace and won't feel a thing.  then i get disoriented and dizzy afterwards.

boytoy4female -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/5/2008 5:22:20 AM)

The question is much like asking, "how do you know when you are drunk?"

Im not sure that I can define it. Whateveryone else says is true. Each time is a little different. Though I know I've been there before, I am always dumbfounded by the fact I'm there again. I know I am there when that little safety switch in my head starts flicking on and off. And, I realize that normal world and the normal me is way out there (pointing down the long dark tunnel). I do get a feeling of split-personality. I can see the "normal" me, but I cant imagine it. Much in the same way as in the vanilla world, I cant fully fathom subspace.

BDOMsecret -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/5/2008 7:53:07 AM)

This has been interesting reading.  I have always thought i do not experience subspace because i do not want to "leave" the situation, but perhaps i have to some extent.  There are times when i hear the question, but dont realy feel like answering.  I guess i would not call that subspace, just me turning into mush, lol.  I do not think i would enjoy not remembering what He has done to me.  Revisiting the scene in my head later is part of the enjoyment for me.

CrazyC -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/5/2008 9:23:33 AM)

I think Beth discribed the sinsations that happen the best. Everytime i go int an altered state of mind, I am more sensitive to noise, smell, and touch. I see things seem a little more vivid. These happen everytime I go to subspace, but there seems to be for me two diffrent kinds of subspace.

One is when dealing with pain. It becomes internal and i get lost there. At times, i don't even notice the person inflicting the pain but just the sinsation. The other times are hard to explain. I seem to be placed straight into subspace at time when servicing my Dom. This seems to be sort of a peaceful space. I have also known myself to get lost in the uphoria while having sex with multiple partners. It is sort of like a being drunk on the adrinalin. Both these times I am still very coherant, but still in a space that effect my chemistry.

Phoenix2raven -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/6/2008 1:20:59 AM)

for me, i feel different types of subspace depending on what's going on. i've been trance meditating for years and when we have a very spiritual, deep scene, subspace feels quite a lot like entering a trance, a "lifting" sensation at my heart chakra and a sudden quieting of the background noise of my mind while i feel the physical sensations far more intensely. sometimes it's simply physical, an endorphin rush: a lovely warm, melty feeling similar to when i'm in pain and have taken a strong painkiller (although that's the kind of subspace from which i drop the most heavily).

if we both enter Dom/subspace simultaneously, "the space in-between" (as Sir calls it), i feel like i'm flying, out of body totally! i tend to see blurry-bright white light and can't really tell where my body ends and his begins. Sir says it's the same for him at those times. quite a trip! *smiles*

Every person's sub-space experience is different. Though we all have a kitchen, your kitchen does not look like mine. Your subspace is a product of your personality, the environment and the type of bdsm you practice
