The types of pain are completly different. If you haven't used either before I would say start with the crop as you can do real deep damage with a cane.

Persoanly I hate the cane being used on me but love the crop.

I enjoy using canes, crops, switches and jump bats because they are light, produce a lot of sensation, and it doesn't hurt my wrist or shoulder to weild one - but yes, canes can do a lot of damage.  Cropping uses mostly the small leather tongue to produce the sensation, as with jump bats and equestrian switches.  Caning uses the length of the shaft which produces almost a cutting or slicing sensation.  I also enjoy using thin strips of hardwood as sort of a crop alternative - not quite as cutting, but not quite as percusive and difuse as a paddle.  One of my favorite toys is the lucite mini-blind wand.

I like canes... a lot... I have an extensive collection of lucite ones... a few wooden ones.. and some lovely rose bush canes in the back of my car that need to be finished... *grin*

tsatske -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 5:35:09 AM)

I LOVE lucite miniblind wands! and, if you check into a hotel without your toy bag, they almost always provide one as a room amenity! You have to get it down from where it's hanging, but just leave it sitting out on the dresser for the maid when you check out.

I am also very, very fond of the light, whippy switches that are sticking around your yard with little orange flags stuck to them. Actually, they are ridiculously hard to find, the utilities companies, caring naught for my kinky needs, want to use the ones with metal sticks, which rust the instant they are set in the ground, and are therefore useless. I will stop in the middle of the damn highway to steal one of the 'right' kind.

Some toys are easier to do damage with than others, but anything can cause a play accident, so be careful while you are learning. One of my worst play injuries came from a stock whip, which is light and springy as hell, should be able to hit someone, as hard as you can, all day with it and do no damage. But anything can be used wrongly.

peppermint -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 6:40:56 AM)

Each cane or crop has its very own feel.  It depends on the thickness, length, and material used for making it.  They can both 'bite' just fine.

Lynnxz -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 7:12:04 AM)

I have a pref for canes, he's got a set of 7 of them, that start out small, and work their way up in diameter, the last two are very dense, almost no spring to them at all.  Thanks to those, I have a deep set of bruises on my ass, stomach, and legs... *Purr* If you control it well, you can use a cane almost anywhere, from the soles of their feet, to the side of the face. I wouldn't start out there though. [&:]

Crops are annoying little things, altho they are good for pussy spanking I suppose. I'm awkward as hell when I try to use them on others.

tsatske -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 7:18:25 AM)

Lynnxz,
I love a good crop. You need to go to a tack store and buy a real one. My last master owned some damn stupid ass thing he called a crop when i met him, which i refered to as His 'little play toy crop.' I said, oh, for gdsakes, i know your ass is from Philly, but I'm from KY, dammit - when you are visiting me, stop in a fucking tack store and buy a real one?
Finely a sisterslave gave him a real one, pless her heart.
A real one should have an impact and bite (though of course a completely different feel, every toy is different) around the middle of your cane set. a toy one, including the ones that jockeys carry in their hand on the national circuit, (becuase horse loving people do not hit horses with the real thing, the real thing is nasty), feels like an annoying insect buzzing around you, you just want to swat it away.

MistressK1964 -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 7:34:11 AM)

Thats a toughie....I love using both. With a crop I can use it longer and not do alot of damage....BUT with a cane I can inflict enormous pain. With Me being a sadist and My sub/hubby being masochist,it works out great.

kinkypuppy2 -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 8:05:27 AM)

Cane provides more "feedback" a crop is more of a slap. Both are nice but I /we prefur a freshly made live cane.

CruelDesires -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 10:41:58 AM)

Crops:

I prefer crops with large surface areas on their striking faces as they make a much cooler "slapping" sound when they hit. I try to find ones that I like and purchase two at a time as I like to use them in tandem with both hands in a rhythmic way. One of my favorite crops has one side of its striking surface covered with the scratchy part of velcro so I can flip it over and provide a different sensation after warming up an area with impact play. Find a local horse equipment/tack store to find cheap crops for casual play. You can also find quite a selection on ebay. The nicer crops I've found have been custom made for use on humans.

Canes:

Are a much more advanced toy IMO. They are usually used once the bottom has been warmed up by toys with much less sting and bite. Dense canes used in a heavy or unsafe way, can easily cut and break the skin and no only leave deep bruises, but can also break bones if used on parts of body other then the butt.  I own canes made from wood, rattan, bamboo, plastic, water hose, stainless steel and titanium.

hereyesruponyou -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 11:57:14 AM)

Canes are my favorite impact toy for receiving. I'm not into the "stinging" sensations of some, paddles, slappers and crops. Using on others i am more open to whatever stickes my fancy for the moment. One of my favs is a thin whippy cat toy. Feather on one end for fun, but the actual staft of it stings something awful, very easy to leave welts without even trying!  But a slightly more gentle hand can make someone whimper with one of these on the bottoms of the feet. Oh so nice when tied up and they can't get away....

bashfulhuck -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 1:35:49 PM)

For me, i love both. the riding crop has a most delicious slap to it, and it can really get my motor hummin.
But i've also been a heavy armored fighter in the SCA for many years now, and haven't gotten quite fond of being struck with pieces of rattan.
the canes used by a Domme are alot more pleasant in many ways than another 300 LB guy hitting me across my ass with an inch and a half thick piece of rattan, but that's a whole other story hehe.

QuietDom -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/3/2008 8:16:45 PM)

I love crops for their versatility.  A cane can provide more bite than a crop, but there's a much broader variety of techniques available with the crop.

jim64 -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/4/2008 12:41:16 AM)

What is a jump bat? Other than that, crops are light and spanky. Canes can be very cruel and severe. I enjoy both being used on me. One is warm and welcoming and the other takes me home.

masterdstar -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/6/2008 9:41:34 AM)

Gee no fans of rods?
Wood, plastic, metal...so many levels and variations so little give.
; _)
Enjoy your wonder-filled day

deliciousmorsel -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/7/2008 4:24:20 PM)

What people here are calling a crop actually comes in a number of varieties. A bat is a type of crop with a wide popper on the end, a much more useful toy in general. The quality of standard crops with skinny little poppers can be so vast, a bat is a safer bet. GREAT for pussy spanking, in fact being worked over in general with [:)]
I have one that's almost a yard long, better for pushing a sub around with when that mood strikes and worth looking for one of just for the power trip. I think it's a gaited horse prompt of some sort.

SCA- Rattan? Oh please, rattan is for a naked Saturday night. I love the skinny whippy stuff- the trick is to keep it moving in a counter rythym, that is, very uneven timing. In the hands of someone experienced, such beautiful marks!
Real warriors use steel. After twenty years in Modern Olympic Fencing- we actually sweat, you know- there's nothing like a whippy sabre blade! Ooohh! But only in the hands of the trained. And a shirt is reccomended, tiny steel splinters are too Spanish Inquisition. And get infected.
I hate Lucite. Too stiff, no resonance to the pain. It should be like eating sushi, each strike to be savored for it's richness. Lucite doesn't do that, but it looks really cool.

Lordbong -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/10/2008 2:05:38 PM)

Personally i prefer Crops and i would say they are a better starting point if you are unsure of your slaves pain tolerance levels or if you just want to work up to the more painful stuff

lusciouslips19 -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/10/2008 2:10:10 PM)

Canes are scary .              [sm=couch.gif]

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Cane or Crop??? (6/10/2008 2:23:22 PM)

I have a big array of crops, not so many canes....  my fave is one I call "flexible Mr Hand", a long jump bat with a hand shape at the end.  Extra fun for general use AND those hard to reach areas!
