LadyAngelika -> Playing the Angel (10/26/2005 8:16:08 PM)

About 2 months ago Depeche Mode released their new single Precious.

I just got my hands on the album Playing the Angel yesterday which has been in Canada for a week now. I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. Their sound has gotten more sophisticated and they managed to stay current while staying current.

Some of my favourite bits of lyrics are

All this running around, well it's getting me down
Just give me a pain that I'm used to
I don't need to believe all the dreams you conceive
You just need to achieve something that rings true

….

From the blackest room I was torn
you called my name, a love was born
So I believe

I just hang on and suffer well
sometimes it’s hard, it’s hard to tell

….

We're damaged people
Drawn together
By subtleties that we are not aware of
Disturbed souls
Playing out forever
These games that we once thought we would be scared of

When you're in my arms
The world makes sense
There is no pretense
And you're crying

When you're by my side
There is no defense
I forget to sense
I'm dying

I think in general, over the last 25 years, Depeche Mode has been a staple band in the realm of WIITWD.

Any comments, opinions, insights on this new album?

Yeah....

I've heard through the grapevine that you have a fantastic voice. Do you think there might possibly be a chance that this message board might one day be voice enhanced, so we could actually hear you sing those lyrics? ; }

I did not know that they are still singing. They are pretty good. I always liked their music but with age i got into some boring music/singer like Damien Rice.

Yes our tastes mature & change. I found Depeche Mode is one of those bands that matured right along with me.

As for Damien Rice, perhaps a little more subdued but I have to say The Blower's Daughter, played at just the right volume with just the right sound system and just the right person can be bone chilling ;-)

Do they call telephones "grapevines" in the US, boy? ;-)
