(First post on the boards)Greetings.

i think your mistaken about animals loving unconditionally..they arent that far from humans..if you mistreat them..in many cases they will not respond in love(it may take them awhile but they will get the picture).i think they have an immense ability to show love and affection past the point of humans but they can be pushed over the edge much like us from maltreatment.i know we would like to believe our pets would do the opposite and love us no matter what but it's just not the case.

Pets understand the difference between caring and uncaring abuse, they can tell between stupid and not stupid, and they have personalities which may or may not mesh well even with a loving, alert master or mistress.

Firm,

valid points all.  However....maybe it's a girl thing?

Perhaps it's an extension of the damn female monogamy gene?

A dog's "world view" if you will, revolves around his place in his pack, and how he reacts to the other members of the pack -be they canine or H. sapiens.

This pack mentality can also be said of humans but you very rarely see a human as devoted so unconditionally to a person as a dog is to his owner.

It's a symbiotic relationship that's why. Symbiotic relationships are based on exchanges rather than conditions.

In such relationships unconditional love is possible.

Am I the only one who's noticed that nobody has mentioned the obvious unconditional love? The love of God?

Oh the love and joy I get from Mickey is like nothing I've gotten from a human people person biped. Sometimes I feel almost guilty because she loves me and trusts me utterly to always be there and take care of her. Guilty if I go away for a bit because I know she lurks at the door for days waiting for me.What on earth could I have done to deserve that sort of love and devotion? I've simply no idea.

Stella. Perhaps it is only obvious to you and others that happen to believe in God?It certainly never entered my mind.

My parrot loves me, but I know full well that it is not unconditional.  A bird can change, and there are no guarantees.  That said, seeing that little grey head looking down at me first thing in the morning makes it worth waking up!

As far as loving humans goes....I am in agreement with LaTigresse, it is possible to continue loving someone no matter what, even if you can't have any kind of contact with that person.

And Stella, god? Um...sorry, not a deist.  Nice idea, though.

My personal reply to that :-
