>He (Obama) claimed he'd run a campaign that was different from the divisive politics of the past. "What you don't deserve is another election that's governed by fear, and innuendo, and division," Obama said. "What you won't hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge, and patriotism as a bludgeon -- that sees our opponents not as competitors to challenge, but enemies to demonize. Because we may call ourselves Democrats and Republicans, but we are Americans first."<

I hope he can pull this off. Like many others who have voted for him, I am filled with optimism here.

He's inheriting a tough hand, nothing like the hand GWB had to start with.

What folks aren't getting about OBAMA as I see it, is the he's out to change the way politics are being conducted. IF anyone can do this, its him.

I heard it as enemies to "pulverize" rather than "demonize," but a hell of a good speech.  I'm not making any assupmtions about Hillary showing a shred of class, though.

He'll be the nominee when the Convention says so.

Got home tonight and my wife said that Clinton had conceeded. As I was unloading the dishwasher I said, "That's big news." I was a bit dumbfounded.

Got on the internet and of course saw that it was untrue. Its almost like a live SNL skit or maybe the political equivalent of SUNSET BOULEVARD.

I listened to all of thier speeches.. (naturaly) Hillary will do her conceeding one tomorrow.. but her and Obama both did the uniting speeches tonight... I was happy and moved. glad it is over. *sighs*

I did not vote of Obama in the primary, I have not realy liked him until tonights speech. Something in the sub cockle region moved. Not sure what.. but there was movement. LOL

He might be an ok guy. Certainly better then the wanker they have up against. ( Just say no to Bush's 3rd term!)

So I guess we will have to wait and see.

Here's to hoping.

Gwyn,
who has her "Homos 4 Hillary" button that sadly will get very little use now. *chuckles*

Optimism or naivete?

On the wrong side of the rose-colored glasses, it is hard to tell the difference.

I really don't think Obama has a chance in hell of winning.  Even if Hillary decides to run with him as a VP, I don't think they are going to get enough independents to come on board with them.  The die hard Republicans and Democrats have made up their minds, but there are still some Hillary supporters that are going to be pissed off.  You are seeing the die hard Democrats right now.  It's going to be a completely different story when Obama and McCain start competing for the undecided folks.

Well its interesting that he defeated the heavy favorite and presumptive nominee, Hillary Clinton, to win the nomination. This was no small feat and was a work of strategic genius and execution. Check out the WP article about it.

What works against McCain, IMO, is the failed Presidency of GWB and McCain's age.

Still, after seeing BUSH and Karl Rove in action for the past eight (8) years, each of these candidates looks like a white dove of virtue. It should make for interesting theater.

I'm not sure the Republicans can Reverend Wright (ala Willie Horton & Swiftboats) their way to victory here.

Most Americans are sick of these non sequiturs.

Whether or not you will vote for him in November I have a hard time understanding how any American could not see this as a step forward for the country.A black man has been nominated to run for President of The United States,a man who fifty year ago would have had to drink at seperate water fountains than a white man,how can't that be progress...

How much of his success is due to the Clinton's overweening arrogance in presuming entitlement to the nomination?

Did Obama win or did Clinton lose?

There is a big difference is winning over delegates in a primary and winning a general election.  Obama is going to have to start actually explaining his plans for getting all these things he keeps promising.  He hasn't really done that yet.  I will grant that he is an excellent orator.  But speeches don't get things done.

I don't know why people keep comparing GWB and McCain.  The two have butted heads constantly in the last 8 years.  McCain is and always has been a moderate.  In fact, he's a little too moderate for my tastes.  But he is what we have.  At the worst, I think McCain can do a decent job.  Obama hasn't impressed me at all.  He talks a good game, but I don't see any pragmatism from him at all.

Optimism isn't much different than pessimism....they both usually lack realism.

And Obama's speeches are filled of optimism with almost no realism at all.

I still think the Democrats are making a gigantic mistake. Hillary should be the president with Obama as the VP, and then Obama would be a easy win in 2016. Now it looks like McCain has a pretty good chance of pulling this off and the Democrats will lose their two biggest stars in one big swoop. At this point Im not so sure Obama will win. He is not qualified for that job. And if he does win, he'll go down in flames in 2012. Countries like Iran and North Korea will play him like a flute. And universal healthcare is going to be a disaster. I just dont see any real way that is ever going to work in this country the way Democrats want it to work. We are not going to have a system where you can walk into any hospital, show your ID and have heart surgery right there on the spot and paid for 100%. That's not going to happen.

Remember, the popular vote is meaningless in the general election. The electoral college favors the GOP at this point. Because if the GOP holds Virginia and Ohio and picks up Michigan....Obama is not going to win the electoral college. The math just isnt going to work. And in each of those three states, the polling is a dead heat with a slight Republican edge.

I do expect Obama to win the popular vote. I think he's going to win that by 3 or 4 percentage points. But the electoral college is going to be very, very close.

Don't forget that the Democrats have virtually handed Florida to McCain on a silver platter.  That's 10% of the magic electoral number (27) right there.

You are going to have to do a lot better than this, Cloud.  Denying the legitimacy of the questions about many of the choices Barry has made over the years isn't going to help.

It will be very difficult for the Democrats to win Florida.
I think the electoral college wont be much different from 2004 with a couple exceptions. I think Colorado will switch to blue and Michigan will switch red. The election will come down to Ohio and another swing state somewhere like New Mexico or Wisconsin. I dont really see any massive wave for the Democrats. They will win the west coast and New England areas but will be dead in the south. So that cancels out. So it comes down to states like Ohio.

Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and probably Louisiana will all vote for Obama. The Carolinas very well may as well. Illinois is a given. NY is a lock as well. California too. Texas and Florida will have to get real serious about voter suppression to keep Obama from winning there as well. Michigan,Ohio and Pennsylvania may go McCain but that's going to be the major bright spots for the GOP.

If HRC joins the ticket as VP expect that even the rust belt states will swing to Obama as the Clintons flex their muscle with the unions. In that case McCain wins the upper midwest and the mountain west and Arizona.

Expect urban turnouts to approach 90% which the GOP simply won't be able to suppress well enough to avoid this being a cakewalk for Obama. Look to Harold Washington's mayoral campaign for the blueprint, ironic that they live in the same neighborhood. Massive voter registration drives all summer and fall with intense get out the vote efforts.

Yup, he'll take Cambridge and Bezerkely.
And I just can't wait until Obama starts telling the American People about his plan for *AMNESTY* for Illegal Aliens!
I REALLY want to hear him talking a lot about that. lol
