Ugh.

Newville, PA and Shippensburg, PA (they are a few miles from each other): culturally conservative, lots of religious fundamantalists, openly racist, too scary for my gay best friend to contemplate moving to, and *no* asethetic sensibilities -- almost the opposite of who I was and am.  I moved there for work and it was soul-sucking hellacious!  To paraphrase The Bridges of Madision County, it may be a good place to raise kids, but it's not a good place to raise adults.

One of the best places ... a broken down trailer next to a pond with peepers in it.  My closest neighbors were a field of heifers.  I called it the white trash version of Thoreau's Walden Pond.

Chillum, MD..............actually had a shoot out in the bldg caddycorner to us, bet the police/a drug dealer. I had to crawl thru the fields WITH the SWAT team to get out safely. Later that night, after my daughter was finished using her potty (no comment!), the drug dealer's gf, threw a brick thru our window, filling the potty up w/glass (we were in bed at that time) and she set the bldg on fire (her bf's bldg cuz he was arrested). As the tenants were evacuating, shots were being fired at us! I was holding my daughter.............shot or burn...........hmmm, what a choice!

Okay...I have to admit, that trumps living with my ex wife.

Worst place?  Topeka, Kansas.  Does the number 666 mean anything?  The zip code of Topeka starts with 666.  Even worse, I'm headed back there tonight for 3 weeks.  I already miss Kohala, and I haven't even left yet.  No laulau, no mahimahi, no warm ocean breeses in Kansas.  Gotta get them ruby slippers working again to get me back to paradise.

Mine was Coney Island NY. I grew up there. If anyone has seen movies about Coney Island and the gangs out there, they are al fairly accurate. Under the boardwalk is the drug and prostitution mecca. You know better than going out there, the amusement park is gangland after sundown. The Bloods rule the area, and think that everyone should respect their terrritory or else they are siding with their rivals. They take what they want and they expect you to give it to them. I was in more fights by age 14 than most highschool men can ever brag about. I have been shot twice, stabbed once, and all of it was from not letting some gang idiot take my stuff or rape me. On the upside, they all looked worse than me when the cops finaly got there.
I sure as hell dont miss Coney Island. nd from the looks of it when I was back in NY a few months ago, it hasnt gotten any better...

Haha, I lived in San Antonio for a bit. It's not bad until you walk too far, and then the mexicans chase you back to where they think you belong. Nothing really severe happened, altho I did get jumped one night at a hotel. Lucky for me I was still in the army, and a bunch of guys from my company jumped down from the second story to go kick some ass. ^_^ I met my best friends there, I miss it...

oh i have one more place. i was probably 7, this was right before we moved to LA.   it was with one of my dads many girlfriends in a tiny trailer in Kamas, UT.  it was off a tiny mountain road and it was winter and cold as hell.  there was no shower or bathtub and the toilet had a shower curtain around it....that was definitely the worst place i've lived.  i'll never be able to view Kamas as anything besides what it was back then, even though it is really quite beautiful.

Would your ex think enough of you to set the place on fire in the name of her man like the drug dealer's gf did?

In a single wide in Lawton OK, right under the flightpath of incoming airplanes and a neighbor who broke into my singlewide and stole my microwave, stereo and CD's.
The cops would not do anything, even so that you could tell that he jumps over the fence, broke into the back door and carried right into his trailer, there was mud in mine and a trail leading from my backdoor right to his frontdoor.

the lower westside of Chicago.

i was mugged one day while riding the train - the guy just walked right up putting me in a chokehold and snatched a necklace that was around my neck. the other passengers in the "L" car didn't say or do anything to assist me.

second worse place - where i'm living now ...on the edge of Englewood.

I would have helped you, blocked his way, called the cops, screamed and scared him. I am known for doing stupid things like standing up for my friends.

I lived in a van for 2 months.  Did ALOT of sleeping in rest area parkinglots or truck stops. Was in May and June and hotter than hell.Only way to clean up was in a rest area bathroom.Took a towel, wash cloth and bar of soap and waited till it was clear to strip down and wash off.  I got pretty efficient at only taking 5 minutes to do. On the 2 or 3 days a week Id be lucky enough to rent a campsite that had a shower room,I enjoyed that. Plus had it set up with a dresser& bookshelf . On the bookshelf was a TV and coffee maker. As long as I was at a camp site I couldplug in and at least have coffee and watch TV. Bad thing was the windows had no screens and the mosqitos were awful......

Honestly... right outside of an apartment building in downtown vegas, I lived there, in a broken caddy for 3 months until my dad could find an apartment (coincidentally, in the same building)

Kentucky.  I found it bizarre that they called me a Yankee.  It was worse for my husband, they called him a "Damned Yankee", they laughed, but I think they were sort of serious.  That was 10 long months of my life I'll never get back.

No you can't have my ruby slippers (now disguised as croks).  I know all I want to about Fred, had a couple run ins with him.  A few years ago he was in Honolulu, was planning on coming to Kohala because some teacher at the middle school mentioned something in class about gays and lesbians...until my daughter riled up some of the locals who threatened to beat him up.  He never showed up.  LOL.  And for those of you who don't know about Fred, don't bother.  Ya don't want to know.  I agree, Wichita can be pretty bad.  If you get over to Liberal (The armpit of Kansas), there's the wizard of Oz museum.  Maybe you can steal their ruby slippers.

Well I was young and quite naive at the time.  At this point in my life I'd know better than to move to Kentucky.
