Venatrix I love it when you speak Latin.

Thank you.  And they say a classical education is of no use anymore.  Hah!

Man i've gone through more incarnations here than a genie; i get bored with my nick after awhile and just feel the need for a fresh start.

i dun suffer as much from insincere people as i used to; i've learned to ask some questions and if i don't get answers...or don't like the answers..i just shine T/them on.  Seems to help.  Just a suggestion.

Best wishes.

Poofing like a real genie too.   I've learned a few things from my experiences dealing with people online.  Actually, the ratio of real people so far out weigh the game players.  The whole online dating game/match thing is rather new to me.  Trust me, I've made some blunders along the way.

Oh, I am bummed! I read the profile of a dominant on here and he sounded *perfect*...or at least perfect for me! ;) But I didn't think I would fit the bill for him. But tonight I decided it wouldn't hurt to send him a message, just to say hi - without any expectations. But his profile is gone! :(

It could be a sadistic head game ..........designed to have you mail him the very second he re-appears and say: 'Oh I have really missed you. You sound perfect to me even though I didn't think I fitted the bill or came up to scratch for you. I was so sad when I thought your profile had disappeared.....'
Gotcha! kerchung!

L8bloomer -> RE: Waaah! Lesson learned (6/5/2008 12:23:56 AM)

Wow! I wasn't expecting so many responses! Thanks to everyone who commented and for the great advice. One of the lessons I seem to endlessly repeat relates to my naiveté...because it just didn't occur to me that he could possibly be fake - despite the fact that I have encountered plenty of fakes in the past! It isn't like I'm some ingenue, so I have to shake my head over my reaction to his profile. It's possible he is real, possible he's fake, or, perhaps, somewhere inbetween.

I will check to see if he comes back. But, I certainly won't obsess on it. I did notice that he had been a member for a couple of years, so I don't think he was a fly-by-night sort.

In answer to the question from crouchingtigress, he appealed to the romantic in me for one. And other things he mentioned in his profile made me think he held some of the same values I do. Plus...he's a Dom! :D

At any rate, thanks to those who posted for the reminder to keep my head in the real world. ;)

Jack Nicklaus said "The more I practice the luckier I get."

But my fave was some graffitti I saw on a building out in Gunnison in '92 after a winter ascent of Uncompagre,

*LOL* I'm sure I must have seen this one before, but if I have, it's been a long time because it rings only the vaguest of bells. ;)

I think you just have to grab the bull by the horns and go for it in this life. What's the worst that can happen, they say 'thanks, but no thanks'

Prospective partners are like buses, you miss one, there will always be another coming along sooner or later

It's the choices you make. I am in a very slow and deliberate search. I've decided (after being conned once too many times) that I will take my time. I want to watch a person's postings over time. I want to see if a person is a fake or if they are real. I want to know a person's faults and strengths. I want to know what they want out of a relationship, play or serious. So, I keep re-reading their profile, watching their posts, looking to get a feel for the person. I check out who they have listed as friends. If someone disapears quickly, I don't worry, because I didn't have enough information on them to wonder if it would work. It's a choice that I make. Everyone has to make their own choice on how to approach things.

I have read a lot of profiles, responded to a lot of profiles, and even met several women in real life.  I can still remember the perfect profile.  It was awesome.  She was funny, well read, into gardening and the outdoors.  I wrote her, and she wrote me right back.  I was ecstatic.

Turns out it was a Nigerian scammer who had copy-pasted a profile from Match.com.

True fucking story.

Did you join Match.com to meet the author of the original?

JohnWarren -> RE: Waaah! Lesson learned (6/7/2008 5:41:08 AM)

As I've said many times, munches and other dating venues are like consignment stores.  Much of the stock is crap, but if you find what you are looking for, that doesn't matter and the "good stuff" rarely stays on the shelf for long.

The nigerian scammer I'm currently stringing along (since last November I think) just had a friend of hers send me a $1500 check via Fed Ex Priority Overnight.

She was stranded during a photo shoot (yes, of course she is a model, and wants to spend the rest of her life with me) over in the dark continent and needs the funds to pay her hotel bill and purchase a plane ticket to me.

ROFLMAO.

I string them out for as long as they're willing to keep initiating contact and chat. Time invested on my part is maybe 20 - 30 minutes a week.

This one I've even told flat out I know she is a he pretending, and only to try and have me send money.

These folks can be as delusional as any addict or alcoholic. Never underestimate the power of denial.

Ebola Monkey Man is more serious and skilled at this than I am, and he seems to have an endless amount of time to devote to it as well. If you want a really good laugh check out his site:

So I guess the lesson here is...don't wait...even if you don't think you have a chance, because...to quote - and I can't believe I am quoting him! - Wayne Gretzky, "You miss 100% of the shots you never take."

I never trusted that bastard.  His eyes we're too close together.

(Sure sign of criminal intent, if you ask me).

AMaster -> RE: Waaah! Lesson learned (6/8/2008 11:27:15 AM)

I agree that one should not hesitate to contact a person of interest. You won't know if you don't try.  However, this guy either gave up the search or found his perfect match.  Move on.
