When you are 85 there are not a whole lot of gigs you can get. Ed McMan is so recognizable that he can't even take a part as an extra in a movie for money. I suspect that his income from the Johnny Carson Tonight Show was no where near what Jay Leno and guests are getting or even what JC himself got. Salary levels just weren't that high when he started out and the increases were incremental even with an agressive agent who would have taken 10-20%. Add in the other parasites that movie and tv personalities have to have, accountants, bodyguards, etc and you are supporting a small horde on your salary, and that is not counting your family, home, utilities, health insurance that he has to cover himself since he doesn't work for a studio, etc. I suspect that broken neck wasn't cheap, medically, or with physical therapy and after care. So anyone want to guess what the insurance and property tax bill is on a house with a 4.8 million dollar mortgage? I don't even want to think about it. Especially in earthquake, mudslide, fire territory. Sigh..I am hoping that he will be able to pull out of this, but like a lot of Americans especially the elderly, that circle around the drain is growing stronger every day...many are being pulled under no matter what they try to do to fix the problem. poenkitten (who knows if McMan is getting Social Security the max he can pull is less than 3K a month, he HAS to work to survive)
