In a truely amazing ethical swampland, physicists at Northeastern Univ.conducted a study of P/pl's location by tracking which tower T/their cell phone was using.  An illegal activity in the US, the researchers went to an undisclosed area of the world where apparently privacy law did not prevent them from this.  The researchers never consulted an ethics committee before starting the study, and claim they never obtained actual cell phone numbers or user identities...but who really knows?

i remember when P/pl used to grouse about a national i.d. card...this takes government interference in our private lives to a whole new level.  In my mind there is no chance at all that if they have learned HOW to do this, they WILL do it...to A/anyone they choose.

This isn't new.  The feds used cell phone tracking to catch a group of drug traffickers last year.

Who cares? Are you hiding from someone?

I refuse to own a cell phone.

Using cell phone tracking is a viable law enforcement technique in this country...but as far as i know, police still have to get a warrant based on probable cause.

Yes and that warrant can be issued by a secret court on secret evidence by a secret judge... [:D] Thank god for the Patriot Act.

Meanwhile tracking people via cell phone is nothing new. Remember the Nextel "Dont bother the dots , the dots are working" commercial.... Nextel Phones have GPS in them and I can log into a site and see exactly where it is at any time....  It was invaluable as a security measure for my ex-wifes kids, if they ever got snatched log into the net and poof theres the dot.... "Officer go get my dots..." Right now I use it to track flight students. If a student is supposed to make a solo cross country to say "Galveston" that cell phone I send with him better be showing up at Galveston Intl. airport ... If I see him sitting 5 minutes away at Baytown Municipal, (as I have done already with some little snots who thought they were smarter than me.) hes not getting his cross country sign off and hes gonna shit his pants when I drive over there and walk in... [:D]

I dont understand the fucking privacy concerns people have. Jesus Christ, what are people hiding? If the cops / NSA / CIA / FBI / Delta Force / Black Helicopter people want to tap my cell phone god bless them... They will learn that I like "Shrimp Chowmein with extra duck sauce, the orange stuff in the packets not that red shit in the cups, and the shrimp roll instead of the egg roll. mix my soup 1/2 wonton half egg drop.." They will learn that the chick at the Walgreens Pharmacy is as fucking dumb as Miss Teen South Carolina. They will learn that I either try to have phone sex with telemarketers, or pretend to be retarded when they call and will probably piss their pants laughing. ("Im not a smart man but I know what alumininum siding is. Will you be my girlfriend? Hey Hey you you I dont like your boyfriend, hey hey you you I think you need a new one...") They will see exactly how many idiots I have to deal with every day and will discover that my friend Jen is a drama queen who should be medicated and who should get a better vibrator and swear off men forever. Oh yes I almost forgot - MAJOR national security issue here - NO avocado on my torta, everything else but no avocado and I want the MILD salsa not that spicy green stuff that makes my asshole bleed on the way out... I really pity the spy assigned to monitor my cell phone!

Hey, me too! I thought I was a rebel. Wow, there are others out there. Maybe we could form a community, get togethers....we could unite!!!

Pretty much all cell phones have GPS tracking in them anymore.  All digital phones.  I have a few friends who kept the analog phones so they couldn't be tracked without their knowledge.

People who I know who work for the government get their paychecks.  Cash them.  Carry no cell phones when off duty.  Will not use a credit or atm card.  Its a cash and carry world for them primarily because we are tracked with everything electronic we do.
Including everytime you log onto the internet..and everywhere you go when logged on.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Big Brother Tracks P/pl's Location by Cell Phone Use (6/5/2008 7:54:11 AM)

I have a Razr, if someone monitors my phone they had better be prepared to be bored, cause all I use it for is to make sure people are going to be places, and to order pizza or chinese on my way home from work, sure there is the actual conversations I have, but, since the closest thing to illegal I've done all year was drive with a suspended licence that I didnt know about, im not too worried, the fact is that there isnt the manpower available to monitor every minute of everyones day, even though in this modern age it is theoretically possible...

also, that gps you are so worried about becomes invaluable if ya get in a car wreck during a road trip, or get lost while hiking, so Ill happily take it

atursvcMaam -> RE: Big Brother Tracks P/pl's Location by Cell Phone Use (6/5/2008 7:58:32 AM)

If i remember correctly, that was how they located OJ Simpson, leading to that painfully long low speed search televised across the west.
if someone is that focused on your activity, you are already in trouble.

Actually if you got into a car wreck or got lost hiking you wouldn't be priority enough to track.  So it then becomes nothing. There are people who get lost every year...on that mountain...some they never find even though their cells were on and they were trying to make calls to the rescuers.
The people I know who don't like it is because they see what the gov does to many times innocent citizens and they don't want to be one of them.

kittinSol -> RE: Big Brother Tracks P/pl's Location by Cell Phone Use (6/5/2008 8:04:48 AM)

Fast reply - I don't get this: some people are suspicious of government intervention and fight it at any opportunity, but they don't seem to care a toss whether the government is able to know of all their private activities and exact whereabouts. Can someone explain this to me?

as much as I hate arguing this early in the morning...

Last July my best friend went hiking, he went alone because nobody else could get the time off, he was in Parley's canyon and got lost (we usually go up Big/Little Cotonwood or the Oquirh mountains) within 24 hours past the time he stated hed be back he was in a medivac chopper coming home, the rescue team that found him did so by having Cingular/AT&T track down where his phone was. Obviously a 22 yr old tech support agent is, in fact enough of a priority.

BlackPhx -> RE: Big Brother Tracks P/pl's Location by Cell Phone Use (6/5/2008 8:17:32 AM)

They can track your cell phone using triangulation, or linear usage of cell phone towers as you are passed from on to another. The odds of them listening in at random is low, and if they are listening in they are looking at you for more than a phone conversation. Theyt can track your email and have programs that constantly scan emeails coming and going for certain keywords and phrases. One pops up and it is passed to a human to review. Get in an accident with any car newer than 2003 (I think it is) and there is a black box (computer module) in there that will tell them how fast you were going, in what direction, when you hit the brakes, if you were weaving etc. Insurance companies also have access to this information not just the cops. Have an easy pay pass for tolls? They know where you are by the booths you use and which direction you are headed in. Frankly if they really want to know, they can find out what books you read (library and store bought), what foods you buy and where you shop, where you get gas, atm, and sites you visit.

Nothing is out of reach of Big Brother's information gatherers, save your thoughts as long as you don't express them, in writing or out loud. Look up folks, they have added something new to the street lights..Yep, they don't even have to have a cop there to nail you for running a yellow or red light. Glance around..in some cities there are cameras on the light posts..not watching the street but the sidewalks.

Get used to it.. the Gladys Crabbize (Bewitched) ain't just watching from next door anymore.

Ive been telling people here to worry about big brother several times and everyone thinks Im nuts.

Kind of like the election....everyone wants more government in their lives. People are in search of that parent to take care of them.

popeye1250 -> RE: Big Brother Tracks P/pl's Location by Cell Phone Use (6/5/2008 8:19:05 AM)

I watch that cop show, "The first 48" where all the dumb criminals talk their way into jail.
They use phone tracking to catch those low i.q. criminals too.
But, they're easy to catch anyway, for one they rob banks that are within their own media markets then act surprised when they run the surveilance photos on t.v. and someone recognises them! lol
If you're going to rob a bank do it in a different media market!
If you're in Boston rob a bank in NYC or Cleveland or whatever.
Then, you won't see your surveilance photo on your local t.v. station!
Morons!
It's just unbelievable how *fucking stupid* criminals are these days!
Maybe I should start a "crime college" and charge big bucks for it!
"Rule number one, *Keep your mouth shut!"*
*Don't say ANYTHING, ever!*
I don't use portable phones.

There is an old chinese curse, as follows:
"May you live in interesting times, and come to the attention of those in power."

If you have a concern, use alternate forms of communication....land lines, "disposable" cell phones that don't carry your name....or don't do anything that would bring you to the attention of "those in power."  Some days it's good to be a small fish in a big pond.

I couldn't agree more, but my question wasn't based on my personal concerns...

Irishknight -> RE: Big Brother Tracks P/pl's Location by Cell Phone Use (6/5/2008 8:49:42 AM)

To be honest, this doesn't bother me a bit.  I carry my phone in case of emergencies so the ability of them to track me is fine.  If I want to be untrackable, I'll pull the battery out.
I found it interesting that they can even listen to many models of cell phones when they're "off."  They can know what you're talking about even when you aren't on the phone.  Thats one of the things that caught my attention about the drug dealer case when I heard it on the radio.  They put a tap on the suspect's cell phone and taped it just like someone wearing a wire.
