That's it. That's my reason.

I feel sorry for Obama. He's going to have to fix the fuck ups of Shrub Jr. and even some wrought by Bill Clinton - that's at least 16 solid years of fuck ups, and maybe more if the truth be told.

I don't know if he can or even wants to fix things in the way that he claims with his rhetoric. Maybe he's just another status quo, soul-sucking motherfucker. Could be...

But a vote for McCain is surely a vote for status quo times infinity. I just can't do it. It's too nihilistic even for me.

I am going to vote for Obama because it's time we get a person of color into that highest of offices. A more color-blind society could only be to the good of all.

I've looked at my choices and that's the best I can get out of any of it - an African-American for Prez. Whoopee!

bipolarber -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 5:34:12 AM)

I don't expect the next Pres. to fix everything. At best, they may slow the slide into financial and foreign policy disaster... but, I think he'll make a good start. Unlike McCain, who seems to be more and more "More of the same McCain." or "100 years McCain" or "The President who will load the Supreme Court with sexist reps from the KKK, McCain."

Yeah. Obama. Because the alternative is the GOP scortched Earth policies.

kittinSol -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 6:39:16 AM)

Mightily controversial, Sugar - the fallout could be toxic.

popeye1250 -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 7:00:17 AM)

In the journalism craft that's called a "fluff piece."
Oh, great source too, The New York Times...
Now this is the kind of thing they're good at writing, opinions, not facts.

kittinSol -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 7:02:10 AM)

Journalism is bias: it's inevitable. The secret is to balance your sources.

I suggest you read "Le Monde": it's pretty neutral.

SugarMyChurro -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 7:20:13 AM)

I have no problem with the fluff piece. It is mostly just opinions - obviously culled from a variety of sources, esp. African-Americans.

Sometimes it's nice to do something just because it makes other people feel good. If Obama winning will allow African-Americans to hold their heads up a little higher than before, hey that's great.

I'm out of issues on this election. I think none of my favorite issues will be topical this election season. So this is my issue: making an African-American the next Prez.

I still hope for a female VP, just not Hillary. Obama's ticket could still set two historical precedents. I'd vote for him just to achieve those ends.

Wow - Making African-Americans feel good about themselves and hold their head up is a reason to vote for Senator Obama? Won't the African-American's only feel half good about themselves? As a expect on social engineering feelings, how can you not consider that there would be some people voting for the white half of Senator Obama? You know, the half that he's embarrassed to say, would walk across the other side of the street if confronted by a group of African American men walking on one side.

No racial prejudice or bigotry of low expectations there is there? A converse vote for Senator McCain to make old balding white guys feel good about themselves is no less legitimate - right? He may represent my democraphic, but seeing him elected will not make me feel good in the least.

I can only hope the racists fools who vote for Senator Obama because he is black will be canceled out by the racists fools who will vote against him for the same reason.

However, prejudice aside, I'm glad and jealous that SMC has a reason to vote FOR a candidate. He's ahead of me in that regard. I'm still working on the third party list of suspects.

christine1 -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 10:34:49 AM)

smc, i see your point a little....in the last few weeks, i've been trying to find a reason to vote FOR anyone.  i'm hoping to find something and someone i can vote FOR, rather than AGAINST, but i need to find something that adheres to my values and beliefs, not what will make another group of people happy.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 10:36:29 AM)

Im voting for The Undertaker, cause I know hed protect us...
(dead serious *no pun intended*)

Then vote your pocketbook. You cannot then vote for McCain.

christine1 -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 10:45:10 AM)

my pocket book nor McCain nor Obama adhere to what i'd like to see in the next President.  i hate that AGAIN, i will have to vote for the lesser of 2 evils.  i want to be able to vote for someone i really want, rather than for someone i dont' want just to avoid the lesser of 2 evils.

popeye1250 -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 10:47:19 AM)

Churro, I think you're onto something there!
If there were an "Irish" guy running for president I'd vote for him just because I'm "Irish!"
Makes sense, right?

Leatherist -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 10:47:53 AM)

At this point, I will vote for anyone who does not seek to maintain a status quo that is not serving the interests of my class of people. And that has not done so for at least the past fifty years. That let's out Mcain as having my vote.

Actually it does. At least you'd be voting for what you like and understand. Perhaps someone with a worldview like your own. I can dig it.

I'm just saying that absent everything else I might have voted for - universal healthcare, reproductive freedom, USA out of Iraq - I will vote for a black man. If he can give me a female VP, so much the better.

My values include the notion that all people have the same rights and opportunities under the law.

And at least with Obama there's a chance that my heavier issues will get some play. We'll see...

Asherdelampyr -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 11:00:45 AM)

So because your values say that everyone is equal, you would pick a race/gender over another?

maybe I read that wrong

cloudboy -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 11:06:21 AM)

You don't really seem to understand, the NYT article was about minorities feeling the system was open to them. Is something like that really beyond your grasp?

Two things are at play: (1) A minority candidate won the nomination fair and square --- showing that a minority candidate can achieve something never done before. (2) The minority candidate is also the best candidate; young, brilliant, precocious, and inclusive.

Its a combination of opportunity and preparedness.

As GWB would say, "its awesome."

Note: I don't support Obama because of his race --- I support his message, platform, and tactics --- but I also understand the larger historical significance of his primary victory.

No one owes Obama a vote to further race relations or to rectify past inequalities ---- he only deserves your vote if you think he's the best candidate.

SugarMyChurro -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 11:06:45 AM)

Yeah, that bullshit isn't going to work on me.

We've never had a black man as Prez and this particular one is clearly superior to McCain. Where's the objection?

Asherdelampyr -> RE: I'm Voting for Obama (6/5/2008 11:09:05 AM)

im not objecting to him being prez... I sure as hell dont want Mcain in (he scares the hell outta me)
my question was in the way you phrased your statement, because it sounded.... off
It seems like you are saying that if two people were indistuingishable from each other, you would pick the woman or black man, because everyone is equal... and that doesnt make sense to me, so I asked, call it bullshit if you will, but at least try to answer the question eh?

What the hell is he talking about? I wont back Barack Obama nor will I ever. And nor will half the country.

The guy hasnt even united his own party. You think those rich white women that were supporting Hillary will now automatically support Obama? Good luck on that!

A turnip is clearly superior to McCain.
