Pixelslave and I must both be in reflective moods today.  Here's my contribution for describing the responsibilities and "cosmic energy" between Domina and submissive (albeit, this quote is much more ethereal than Pixel's more pragmatic source material).

Keep in mind that the original is clearly written with M/f dynamics in mind, as follows:

"Sexually speaking, the masculine is the force of direction and the feminine is the force of energy.  That is, the masculine provides the form in which the feminine can freely flow, like the structure of the riverbank guides the energetic flow of water.  Less obvious is the fact that the force of the river's water carves the shape of the riverbank that guides it."  ~Unknown

However, remove the "sexually speaking" caveat and flip the genders around, and it becomes a much more insightful, useful, and accurate model of how we, the enlightened folk here in Ask A Mistress, know that the world actually runs. :-)

As follows:

"The feminine is the force of direction and the masculine is the force of energy.  That is, the feminine provides the form in which the masculine can freely flow, like the structure of the riverbank guides the energetic flow of water.  Less obvious is the fact that the force of the river's water carves the shape of the riverbank that guides it."

Opinions and comments are graciously accepted and encouraged.

Elan.

Being a Switch myself... I can see the validity in both statements.

I'll perhaps go a step further and replace all gender roles and replace them with Dominant/submissive, but if that's the case, this thread will belong in a different discussion. heh

Elan,
I've observed where Mistresses have provided the spark to energize me at times as well as the structure to guide my actions.  They've helped to shape the man I am today and I'd expect one may wind up guiding my development into the man I'll become tomorrow.  As such, I think your analogy is perhaps a bit too simplistic to encompass the dynamics of all D/s relationships.

What you've written here is a much more balanced, multi-faceted approach.  Add the somewhat egalitarian viewpoint that "submissives sometimes provide the spark to energize their Dominas and also assist with structure in Femdom relationships" and I think we're onto something here.

Agreed.  But it's poetic as all hell and that's why I like it. :-)

There's no doubt that a good submissive knows how to push their Dominant's buttons, but I'm not so certain about the structure part.  I tend to view a Mistress as more of a manager of the relationship: deciding how our resources are going to best be put to use to our mutual benefit, primarily along the lines of such things as which tasks are best performed by one or the other of us, regardless of the egos involved.  I'd expect we'd discuss those things before they were cast in stone, but that's still the way I see it happening in general.

That approach clearly doesn't seem to fit with what you've written.  Plus, I prefer to see her provide structure by helping set a routine for us to follow; deciding when or if spontaneity should rule and the routine broken for some off the wall fun.

Yes, I would say I agree with that. When I first read the quote I thought that from my perspective it seemed that women were better at guiding and men at being raw energy. I know some will disagree in that gender distinction, but I do tend to think of men as generally unruly and needing their energies to be structured, contained and directed a bit. Especially when it comes to relationships. Mileage may vary, but over all, I think it's a good analogy.

It's the testosterone.  It makes men crazy.  They need a firm hand to keep them focused.

I'm with Celeres...I don't like broad gender distinctions and think inserting dominant and submissive works better.
It's very lovely and not off the mark, either. :)

For me,  TNstepsout has hit it right on the head.  Women are better at guiding, channelling, directing, controlling...men are better at doing.
