Vista wireless connectivity problem.HELP! - 6/6/2008 8:44:40 PM

I have an HP laptop that's about 7 months old. The other day, it stopped picking up the internet connection from my wireless router. I get a "local connection only, no interent connection" message..
Here is what I tried:
First the obvious:
*reboot computer
*turn radio off and on
*delete wireless network and rediscover
*update the adapter driver (I have an aircard)..

Before I wound up uninstalling the wireless router and reinstalling it, I had my ex try to get on my wireless while he was over to see if it was my computer or the router. He had no problems getting on the wireless network using his laptop.

So, it's my Vista laptop..
I tried to restore it the last known good configuration, but that failed too..

Any suggestions?

Call HP, they sold you the turkey. Could be a known issue.

I get this from time to time too usually when other networks start up in the same area. Disconnecting and then reconnecting seems to work fine for me though.

I'm not a techy, BSB, so, I'm afraid I can't be much help. Afriend of mine did, however , have the same problem. It seems that, given that your friend's laptop aquires a connection at your place, that is not the problem. I suggest you recheck your internet connection settings.

It's Saturday morning, yanno. Some sleepy eyed techy will come along and be of more help. I'm sure.

A tech friend of mine updated her Vista and then could not get it to connect with her wireless connection--she's got a sat dish. Come to think of it--I haven't seen her AIM name since she mentioned the problem so I am wondering if she ever got it solved. Hmm, doing some calling this morning to find out.

Hello BSB

If it says, 'local connection only' that would tend to imply that you are connected to the router, however it is likely that you have not been 'authenticated' correctly. So check your password (WEP key). Try re-entering the key, making sure you type correctly or failing that, if you have a network cable, jack into the router, without using wireless, to set up a land connection and change the security settings on the wireless router using a new WEP key which should be entered into the router and also into the connection settings on your laptop.
Apparently, restoring to last/previous config on vista doesn't always work like it does with XP .(So I have been told before). Hope that helps?

No if your WEP/WPA key was wrong you wouldn't be able to connect to the router in the first place. It may be the router has intermittent connection issues to the internet or a program on the laptop is limiting access to ports.
If you are looking for the unobvious then it's banana fumes disrupting your signal.

Could be, but I have not had anything limiting my connection from a laptop (I have a Dell, Vaio, HP and a PB/NEC with a linksys router) in my experience, but then I have no idea what BSB is running. I often get limited or no connection and yet still connect to the router, when the WEP key goes bizzarro. Jacking in is probably the best bet and check all the router settings, particularly the wireless security and if only specific MAC address' are allowed to connect.

And just another suggestion - I know you said you have rebooted the laptop, but have you rebooted the router? Even if your ex's lappy connects, when you connect to a wireless network - your computer is given a 'lease' occasionally it can retain the details of your PC and technically 'refuse' to give it a new 'lease'. So rebooting the router may help.

Why would a router give me access to your local network if I didn't have the right security key? If it says local access only that means there is local access already.

MAC address filtering problems is also unlikely to allow you to access the local network either. I think all this is a red herring and is more likely to be a known problem with Vista, I get similar happen to me and when I go to disconnect and then reconnect I often see another network in the area. I changed the wireless channel once to avoid the conflict, not sure that helped though. It usually comes down to quality of signal not access settings.

So you are saying, that the OP should have access and should have access to any other computers connected to the local network through that router? I am sure BSB will inform us the answer when she reads this. But as she stated her ex has no prob getting on the wireless network and she does - has she really managed to obtain a connection?

With all due respect FC, these are suggestions - and BSB can try them. If they fail, then at least I offered. I run both vista and XP on a variety of different laptops and these are problems that have occured and that have been rectified. Yes it can be frustrating attempting to get systems working again. Yes it might be a vista problem - although frankly vista is much more stable than six months ago, but unless she jacks in and checks the router and settings, who knows? They are options - that worked on our systems and the OP can try or disregard. I don't see many others offering any constructive advice.

If she hasn't changed any settings recently to cause this, changing them isn't going to fix it in my opinion, it just adds more possibility of error.

I don’t know enough about where they connected the other laptop from to comment on the reasons why one works and the other doesn’t but quality of signal is the biggest factor if it’s an unexpected change i.e. she hasn’t installed anything recently that could be in conflict. Computers aren’t so unpredictable in nature; I find usually once you set something up correctly it stays set up correctly.

If the signal is poor quality the connection sometimes can drop to local only i.e. capable of handling less traffic.

Im not suggesting that BSB has changed any settings herself. But every router I have ever had in say - six years - has at some point, needed to have its settings reset. Be that the wireless security, the ISP settings whatever - wireless routers infamously tempremental. There are many reasons why setting get reset within computers - fluctuations in power supply, windows updates, installations, programmes doing things they shouldn't etcetcetc.

First assumption you make is that everything is fine - that the operating system is fine and router is fine. And settings reset. In part, because that is the cheapest thing to assume. If changing settings does not work, trying to connect to anothers system (friend, neighbour etc) to see if it is problems with the router, specific to her machine, because the router is already tested by her ex and his. If she cannot connect to a different network, then it could be the wireless network card in the machine or you are then looking into operating systems and other blocks into the net from software. Although the first step should probably be that her firewall internet lock has not been applied, ie - zone alarm, norton etc all have a 'panic button' which will stop all net activity if set/pressed etc.

Another possibility is drivers - but that would manifest when trying to access to another network.

So my advice would be, check the firewall, if that is ok then check the settings (which has always resolved any problems we have had apart from when a router died). If that fails, check connection to anothers network.

BSB I have an HP pavilion dv2500 running Vista too, and this happens to me occasionally. Try this, on the bottom right hand side of your screen click on the little two computer icon ( right click ) and from the menu that opens up choose the diagnose and repair option. Try that first then if that doesn't work, from the same menu click on the "disconnect" option, disconnect from your wireless network, then use reconnect option. Usually for me that works. Good luck.

Thanks Dark and Full Circle.. I had already reset the wep connection and even took out the 128 bit security code to see if I could get on or was entering it wrong.. No go..

I went a restaurant with free wireless and couldn't get on there either..

Rebooting the router is probably the first thing I did when this happened..

It's definitely my laptop.. Everyone can get on my network that has tried..

Definately the machine then - it's just a case of narrowing it down. Have you picked up the latest drivers for your wireless card?
Is the wireless card internal? Have you tried an external network adaptor?
