ThinkingKitten -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/7/2008 7:44:48 PM)

I find myself in a dilemma on the whole Renn Faire/SCA/LARP business. The misnomered Dark Ages (for instance) is one of my favourite periods of history, but when I think of the realities of the period - TB, leprosy, tetanus, scarlet fever etc etc, endless taxes for every bloody bean/grain of barley produced,  priests telling me I'm too stupid to be able to learn how to read and write, let alone study the bible - by which I have to live my life or face eternal damnation, all my teeth gone by the time I'm 30 (if I live that long and haven't been taken out by a tooth abscess that rotted out my jaw and finally invaded my brain....), and constant childbearing and rearing, hubbie likely to be dragged off to fight in some bloody skirmish at a moment's notice..... need I go on?

It's nice to fantasise about the past, but the reality tends to keep the fantasy in check...... I'd want to be one of the so-called "authenticity nazi's" at one moment, and a mead (which I am actually drinking right now...mmmmmmm) guzzling "wench" the next. But I'd have to get a boob job first....[:)]

Aneirin -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/7/2008 7:59:18 PM)

For the present, I have given up with making things for re-enactors, that is until I can find something they want which is not common, as I like to respond to specific needs.

I am currently working on micro scale (quarter inch scales)armour for the belly dancers, that is when I can get my ,'on an extreme budget ' RT blanking to work properly. That and building a wearable statue based upon a lorica musculata for my college project. Perhaps a bit ambitious, but I have three years to do it.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/7/2008 8:13:14 PM)

Ohhhhhhh... yeah, gotta admit, as one of said belly dancers, I doo like the sparkly chaine jewelry... sometimes to much so.  I still have (and wear both as costuming and just cause) a chainmaille belt hung with actual coins that a friend of mine custom made for me about 17 years ago.  In all the time that I've been playing with reenactors off and on, that is the One piece I have fought tooth and toenail to hang onto.

Good luck on building the lorica - if you happen to finish it, post photos!

Oh ya, I recall the "belly" dancers too.

I am awaiting the arrival of the rest of my armor.  My old armor was no longer safe for what I do so I had to spend some serious do re mi to get new stuff.  It was almost completed when last I talked to the man making it.  He sent me some picks just as the faire he runs was beginning.

Oh and that picture, since nobody guessed, is me with Cory of Slipknot/Stone Sour fame.  I did not expect to meet him at a ren faire.  It was kind of cool hanging with a real performer that day.

CruelDesires -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/7/2008 8:37:13 PM)

Armor is my thing. All of my stuff is stainless steel. And yes. The faire Nazis hate it. LOL.

I used to be a paid Rennie performer, authenticity and all, but I much prefer the SCA and larps where I can get into comfy clothes and fight with steel, rattan or boffer swords.   Much more fun to be had there.

The next time the faire nazis start in on your stainless armor, you should let them know that there is an actual historical precedent for it.  I'll have to do the research to find out where it was actually from but my aching brain thinks it was Germany.
The funny thing is, it was completely unintentional and they didn't realize what they had stumbled onto.

CruelDesires -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/7/2008 9:20:17 PM)

It doesnt bother me. There are faire and sca snobs. Im an armor snob. I cant stand ugly nasty smelly armor. Its all good. Here is another one of my SS pieces. [:D]

Spectacular piece, CD - but how's the periferal vision?  Looks from the photos that it would be a tad more vision constricting that my Personal preferences..  it's absolutely georgous metalwork, though, regardless of what the vision limitations might be.

CruelDesires -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/8/2008 6:04:26 AM)

*Shrugs* It is like any other Armet. Visibility is not as good as some. Better then others. More for looks rather then for practical use if one was stick fighting. To me.. it is all about the style of armor rather then the visibility factor. Open face/wire grills don't do anything for me. Never have.

I was going to say that I don't know if Australia has ren faires or SCA but we must as IronBear just posted about attending them.  They do sound like that would be fun to experience.

Irishknight -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/8/2008 7:42:23 AM)

CD, that helm rocks!  Did you make it yourself?  If the gauge is right, I would joust in a helm like that one.

Nosathro -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/8/2008 9:21:41 AM)

As for me, I enjoy Renaissance Faires, SCA, and Adria.  That period of time interests me.  I enjoy the people, the other Rennies, the clothing, yes I do mean the Wenches and all.  A few things I have noted have changed where I am.  One, is since 9/11 Insurance is hard to get so there is less "Live Steel" fighting, with the rattan there also has been more "World of Warcraft" groups and as I like to say "Ninjas in jeans and sneakers" and Pirate groups coming to Ren Fairs.  The Promoters say they have to let them in, that is what is popluar.  Most stay in their camps and just hang out or fight with rattan sticks.  They don't interact with those who come to faire nor any of the other activities such as the Progress Parade or Battle Pageant.

bipolarber -> RE: Renaissance Fayres (6/8/2008 11:37:00 AM)

I used to be a "Rennie"... the midweek parties used to be wonderful. But...

$30 at the gate for a craft fair?

Hottest weeks of the summer and everyone's wearing wool?

Stupid ass storyline that NO ONE, aside from the people involved in it, have any fucking idea is going on?

And finally...  interpersonal polititcs/ personal dramas X infinity?

No thanks.

A buddy of mine made it when he was doing it as a hobby. He no longer does it which is a shame as he was and still is quite talented. It's made from 14 gauge stainless and is quite heavy as well as usable for jousting. All my stainless helmets including the two others in my profile pics are 14 gauge.

Is this the horse?

Thanks for the pics.  My wife tells me that they moved him to a different show.  Krishna is a beautiful dapple grey.  Of course, that horse looks pretty good too.

As for the helm, if your friend ever decides to make more helms, I want to talk to him.
