NEW YORK (AP) — Jim McKay, the venerable and eloquent sportscaster thrust into the role of telling Americans about the tragedy at the 1972 Munich Olympics, has died. He was 86.

McKay died Saturday of natural causes at his farm in Monkton, Md., said son Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports. The broadcaster who considered horse racing his favorite sport died only hours before Big Brown attempted to win a Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes.

He was host of ABC's influential "Wide World of Sports" for more than 40 years, starting in 1961. The weekend series introduced viewers to all manner of strange, compelling and far-flung sports events. The show provided an international reach long before exotic backdrops became a staple of sports television.

Shit.

I was just thinking about him because of the Israel thread. The olynpics will never be the same without him.

I will allways remember his coverage in Munich 1972...."They are all gone"

He was a terrific broadcaster; knowledgable (sp?) and classy.

I remember him from wide world of sports when I was a kid.  I'm too young to remember the 72 olympics' tragedy.

slvemike4u -> RE: Jim McKay dies (6/7/2008 12:59:14 PM)

IK he was the ABC anchor in Munich ,when the terrorists took their hostages Howard Cossell ,in Munich covering Olympic boxing petitioned ABC to take over the anchor spot...claiming the story could only be covered by someone with his unique qualities...Thankfully the powers that be at ABC resisted Cossell's offer(demand)as well as the efforts of the news division to wrest the story from Mr.Mckay....what followed was of course tragic but the coverage was a classic example of a journalist reporting with grace and dignity a truly horrendous event...if my memry serves me right his words were 'They are all gone,they are all gone...simple understated and fully conveying the depth of the tragedy...

Sorry.  I remember reading about the event but I don't remember it.  I probably should have stated that better.  The details were not what I was missing, just the personal memory of the coverage that you spoke of having.  Even seeing it on documentaries after the fact is not the same.  But thanx for the info anyway.  Its nice to see folks out there willing to help.

No problem IK I didn't mean to sound like I was filling in any lapse of knowledge on your part ,just conveying my memories of the event....

"the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat"...
i always loved that part.  Especially the defeat part...it was a skiing demo gone wrong....that mental picture(along with McKay's voice) seems to pop up whenever i make a big mistake.

PanthersMom -> RE: Jim McKay dies (6/7/2008 2:13:07 PM)

damn, another one gone.  i remember the 72 olympics, my family was glued to the television.  he was so emotional, but the perfect professional at the same time.   i used to watch his broadcasts every weekend with my dad.  another part of my childhood slips into history.
