I'm sorry Ironbear, but on this we will have to disagree. My former Squire brother Viktor lived in Australia for several years, is from  the Seattle area like me, and get's along very very well out there in Australia. So it has nothing to do with you being foreign born. I'm not saying you being treated poorly is your fault, just that the fact that you are foreign born is why you are being treated that way by the SCA folks.

I would kill to be able to draw on your years of experience training a group, Ironbear.  Anyone who would pass up the chance to have another experienced person to help train the younger crew is a moron.  Just my opinion.

Interestingly enough, I have been invited to attend a few SCA functions in this area.  I have politely declined twice and the weather got the other event.  The group around here isn't even recognized by the "barony" or whatever because they keep falling apart and starting over or something like that.  I was a little fuzzy on the whole explanation they gave me.

Bashful, you look exactly like a guy I used to work with. Almost caused me to choke on my coffee.  Then I saw that you can actually spell.

In the long run I decided I had better things to do with my time. It might have been different if the whole thing was not set up around someone's ability to whack someone else with a stick-and focused on actual history more.

As it is, "sca" now resides on my "hard limits" list.

Along with gor,and female supremacy.

Well for some ex SCA there is Adria Empire.  I joined due to the drop in live steel in SCA.  I do have friends in SCA and attend activities.  I have noted in my area Rapier are now allowed in SCA ...now my interests is returning.

SCA: for people who don't have enough "interpersonal politics" in their lives.

Gor: For preople who find being a Trekkie... too mainstream.

D&D: Fun, but you're only one bad DM or "rules lawyer" away from having all the fun sucked out of the whole damn thing.

My SCA time started when I lived "downtown" in a huge kingdom, in the largest barony in the kingdom.  There were camping events every weekend of the month for most months.  If you didn't like one group, there was another in under an hour's drive.

Then I moved to the far edge of another kingdom, in a small barony (population numbers), and while it was a big adjustment (one or two camping events a year), I had fun for a while.  Then the politics and "inbreeding" got so ridiculous that in order to escape "those types of people", I would have had to drive at least four hours to go to a one-day event.  I did it a few times, but I lost my enthusiasm for it and just gave up.

My gowns are in a portable closet in my garage, my camping and feast gear is packed up in the garage, and my inkle loom is in my bedroom closet.

Cali

Cali!!!! I didnt know you were a Scadian...

OMG you had to drive 4 hours.. the horrors!

I used to have to drive across 3 states to get to an event ya spoiled brat! LOL

I still have to drive a few hours now.. but I moved closer.. it is no longer a 6-7 hour trek to any "local" event.. just 2-4 hours.

I find if you dig in.. and get really good friends that dig in beside you.... the bastards have a harder time settling in.

I've been a proud member of the SCA now for 14 years. Like anyother large body of people, there are good and bad in it.
I've been a heavy fighter for the entire time I've been in, and have learned so much from the people I choose to call friend in the Society. I have also learned alot from those I don't particularly like at all.
I don't let other's obssessions with titles stand in my way of having fun, I don't allow other's obssessions with the SCA above all else, including real life get in my way, and I've learned that the only fighters out there that talk trash are those without any skill whatsoever to back it up.
A huge part of the Code of Chivalry, which I choose to try to live my life by, is to be humble, merciful and charitable. I've been most blessed by living in a great Kingdom, one full of extremely talented artisans, some of the best fighters in the Known World, Knights that truly know the Virtues of a Chivalric life, great teachers, and truly loving and friendly people.
One thing I have noticed is that every Kingdom has it's own culture. Some Kingdoms are more friendly and open than others can be.
I'm sorry to each of you that has had bad experiences within the SCA, and if you ever decide you want to truly see what the Dream can be about, and want to have a seriously great time, you just come up here to the Seattle area. I would most joyously host you, and try to show you just a little bit about how great the SCA truly can be when you are around people that truly care, and want to show others the joy and happiness they've found.
I've learned so much about being a submissive in the SCA, simply because I am a Squire to a Knight, and am in Fealty to the Crown. I have also served as Captain of the Queen's Guard, and been Champion to my Baroness 3 times, so placing myself on bended knee before people of higher rank has taught me so much that I can take with me into my life as a submissive. For me, being a submissive isn't about the pain or the sex (although those things are nice), it's about the happiness I feel when I am allowed to serve another, to bend myself to their will and not my own.
Again, I deeply apologize to any of you that have had bad experiences in the SCA, and invite you to come to my Kingdom anytime you wish, and I will guarentee you the warmest of hospitality, the finest of food, and the merriest of laughter.

With Sincerity and deep respect,
the bashful one

Greetings,

I had the great joy of hosting one of your Kings and Queens in my households encampment at a GulfWars years back... 2001 if I remember correctly. They were both very down to earth, and wonderful people to share time with.

You're not missing anything, Aviator.  I read a few of them out of curiosity, and I still don't understand the fascination with them.  The books are written at around the 5th grade level.  I am not joking about that.  Seriously, they are just absolute moronic pieces of shit.  I am saying this from the perspective of someone that is a pulp literature and B-grade sci-fi and horror film fanatic.  So that should give you a clue how bad they are.  John Norman basically ripped off the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels about Mars and added sado-masochism to them.   Different strokes as you said, but holy jumpin' Jesus some people just take shit too far

But how do you REALLY feel, slaveboy?.....................luci

My experience with SCA sadly is that they need costumes and names and to get fairly drunk so they can relax their inhibitions, feel comfortable socially and have sex as freely as they want to do but can't otherwise.

I dislike that in the kink world, and even more where it doesn't even have air conditioning.

Well Miss Gwyn, you are a better woman than I am.  Although, being born in downtown Ansteorra, well, there just is no comparison when you move to another Kingdom.

There's something wrong when the King apologizes to you for the way your own Baronial Seneschal has been treating you.  Life is too short, ya know?

Ooooh ickies...

I hate the politics... ( hell I have been in for 22 years and I have dodged getting my AoA at every turn ) I do stuff and help to do stuff and help.. not for a piece of tin on my brow. and I hate the silly I have to party till I puke folks. I dont hang out with drunks mandanely... why would I do it on my vacation days?

I hang out with the folks who have mundane lives they actualy work hard at.. and care about.. ( nurses, Dr's, Firemen and women, home biz. owners... ) and who go to the classes and learn and re-create things. The SCA is a educational non-profit org. I love cooking... and sewing, embroidery, beading, leatherworking, equestrian arts, all sorts of stuff. I cant be a stick jock anymore.. ( too broken! Fall off horsey doing cool stuff go boom!) but I dont mind watching them and helping them armor up and waterbearing. ( not to mention talking shit.. )

I feel bad for those who ran into the wankers.. or had bad exp. in the SCA... but it isnt bad all over.

As it was stated.. every Kingdom has it's own culture and "feel" some are more friendly and open.. some are more closed and cliquish. ( you couldnt get me to move to the East... not even if one particular nummy man begged me to. ~ I'll see his ass at Gulf Wars. )

It is also why I am so particular as to where I can relocate. Some places suck.

Gwyn

That's what I finally decided.

I don't do drugs or drink. And I don't hang with druggies and drunks. And there was WAY too much of both at An Tir events-and there still is. You should hear them whine whenever a site is declared "dry"

Well then Leatherist, you are hanging around the wrong people to be honest with you in An Tir.  I happen to hang out in a crowd that does not drink heavily, and they most certainly don't do drugs. Hence why alot of them are very respected in the fighting community, they take good care of their bodies and are great athletes.
For those that complain the SCA is only about drinking and getting laid, they haven't taken the time to investigate the amazing artistry that alot of people exhibit, or the huge amounts of knowledge about history, or the hour upon hours of training it takes to become a great fighter, wether it's heavy, fencing or archery.
Sure there are mouth breathing goobers in the SCA, there are idiots in every aspect of life. I choose to spend my time with the people that are in the SCA because of a dream. The SCA is the last bastion of the true Warrior/Poet in this sad world. I go to dry sites all the time, and I don't hear whining by the people I'm around.
I guess I choose not to be so judgemental of people though, and try to accept them for what they are. Yes there are people there that treat the SCA as a costumed cocktail party and orgy.
However, there are those of us, and in An Tir we are in great numbers, that are in the SCA out of a love for history, family and friends, and knowledge. Is it everybody's cuppa? Nope, but that's what makes this world such a wonderful place. We can all have different interests.
And Gwyn, you ever want to come up to the An Tir area my dear, I'll make sure you are well taken care of. The household I'm a part of is very hospitable and friendly. Like you, I was able to avoid getting awards for a long time, up until some very good friends won Crown, and I was asked to be the Queen's personal guard. She happend to be a Dominant. They found out I didn't even have an AoA. I tried to sneak off, but when she demands the guard not allow me to leave, and gives me the look, and points to the pillow at her feet, I didn't have much choice hehe. The submissive in me took over and I meekly kneeled at her feet while she gave me my AoA. From her hands though, the award really meant something to me. I do have to admit I do aspire to Knighthood one day though, and would love to win Crown.

Blessings and peace,
the bashful one

My AoA meant something to me because of who was behind it.  My kingdom service award meant something to me in my new kingdom because of who was behind that too.  My baronial service award which came later meant NOTHING because it was given so that the baron & baroness wouldn't look bad - after all, the Kingdom had already recognized me.

I did the things I did because I'm a service slut (running lists, sitting gate, lady-in-waiting, autocratting) and I love the arts (dance, needlework, weaving, sewing, brewing, cooking).   I can't help but miss it when I look at that list, then I remember that as a single parent I have precious free time as it is.  Sigh.  Maybe if I move back to my home Barony one day.

The live steel group that I started with had a set standard of qualifications for everything.  You wanted to earn a title, you earned level 5 in at least three skills.  Most chose combat as one of those three skills but it was not required.  The "king" was elected from among those who had worked their way up.  The system worked extremely well and is the model upon which I would try to build a reenactment group.  I've never liked the "fight for the crown" types.  It seems to me that the non fighter types get left by the side.
