I have seen and heard the term "sissies" used in BDSM on many profiles and journals, but I don't think I understand its meaning in the lifestyle. For instance, I keep hearing about "male and female sissies." Please elaborate on this for me.

A sissy is generally a male who, within the lifestyle, enjoys being feminized and(though not necessarily) humiliated as a result.  More often than not, light to heavy crossdressing occurs and the male will quite often develop a whole "female" persona.  This can lead to forced-bi activities or to domestic servitude in the form of a sissy maid.  Though, of course, nobody has to follow any course.

Some would say it's a very diverse kink and others would say it's very limiting.  It always manages to bring a little controversy from time to time, because it actually offends a fair number of female dominants.  Rather controversial.  So much so that I just stay in the middle and don't take sides. :-p

That being said, it's really like every other subset of the lifestyle...there are wonderful people into it as well as tons of wankers.

From a friend who is an accomplished sissy maid (she is a celebrity in that group!), the term sissy refers to ultra, or exaggerated femnity. For example, the outfits are usually frilly. It may or may not include a sense of humiliation. We spoke about how the term sissy came to be. She did not know the answer to that question. She thought that the term sissy in a vanilla context (especially a decade or two ago) might be used to describe a boy who acts or dresses like a girl, which likely forms the basis for the origin of this term.

To provide one datapoint, my friend is happily and monogamously married to a wonderful domme and the submissive relationship is present at all times, in and outside of the sissy persona. The domme enjoys the kink as well. The desire to appear feminine comes from an admiration of the feminine image.

Cheers,

Sea

This is also my understanding of the term.  When Libby and I married, all of the servers at our reception were sissy maids.  If there was any humiliation going on, it was certainly drowned out by the giggles and playfulness

As a crossdresser, I have a certain problem with the term "sissy."  When I am 'en femme' I want to be referred to as a girl, or woman (or, if a demeaning term is needed, slut, bitch, etc.).  I don't consider it humiliating in and of itself.

However, I now do think it has some placed in forced or "ultra" feminization.  After all, being made to wear the sort of outfit potrayed -- with tons of ruffled petticoats, lace, ribbons, etc. -- and made to mice steps, curtsey frequently, etc., would be considered humiliating even to most women.  So I think it's not inappropriate to use "sissy" in that context.  And for me, I suppose it would make the humiliation much more real...

The term sissy is not used by us because it is usually associated with humiliation which plays no part in our relationship. Although I am kept quite feminine at home it is Her preference and She wants no negativity attached to it.  The more girly I act and dress, the more attention, affection, and treats I get and am punished less. My toenails are always painted and my fingernails usually on weekends if we arent going out. I find that all of this seems to make me feel more submissive than when just a boy and is the effect  My Lady desires.
