there was an easier way

quote:

Mouse balls are now available as Field Replacement Unit . Therefore, if a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel. Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon manufacturer of the mouse. Foreign balls can be replaced using the opo-off method. Domestic balls are replaced using the twist-off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge. Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately. It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction; and that any customer missing his balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items.
To reorder, specify on the following:
P/N 33F8462 - Domestic Mouse Balls
P/N 33F8461 - Foreign Balls

I prefer the optical mice myself....never any ball problems and they work well on slippery surfaces.  And wireless is even better!

Heres what happens with mice.

They clog up with lint and grease.

quarter turn the little thing underneath with the arrows on it, take alcohol and wash the rubber covered steel tracking ball.  look inside, you will see two rollers that are at right angles to one another (sometimes three if you have an expensive mouse).   take a toothpick and pick the gobs of linty shit off them, take a qtip and wash them with alcohol. Stick the ball in, turn the retaining ring on and....

Now; your mouse works better than new.

I agree with that and now they do infrared ones that don't blind you when you look at the underside to clean the fluff off of the feet.

wireless is even better!

When I bought this computer about 18 months ago I also bought an expensive and heavy wireless optical mouse. Within a month it fell from the desk and refused to function again. Subsequently I bought a cheap, light, optical notebook mouse on a wire. Whenever that mouse falls from my desk it dangles unharmed from its wire. I still use it. I wish that I had bought another one for a spare, though.

What if  as it falls the momentum transforms into a swinging motion and it hits a wall or furniture.

At the moment my mouse will dangle from one centimetre of wire when it falls, so there is not much momentum. Also there is no wall nor furniture near, just a foot of empty space.

I prefer a light batteryless mouse on a wire rather than a wireless mouse with heavy batteries.

1cm of wire?

You have a point about the heaviness but since the mouse is resting on a desk it only makes a slight increase to the frictional resistance between the desk and the mouse. If we reduce the µ influence by polishing the desk surface this increased frictional resistance due to the increased normal force can be reduced slightly.

Congrat's on your accomplishment pss.  I love it when I figure out these techy things without having to call my friend Bill up frustrated.  Its really a same when my friend has to drive for an hour to come over and show me how to do something in five minutes that I couldn't figure out in hours.  Then again, he gets his back in trade and we are both happy so I guess I don't hate it so much after all hehe.
