Because We didn't make comment on how you handled your business I made comment on how we handled ours. YOU chose to address how I also had a day job. So a matter of you appearing to be trying to tell me I wasn't making it as a mainly one ofs maker. You contend one can't I contend I do You shrug it off with the idea that I have a day job as well.(and thus I'm not actually making it ) The slap is pretty obvious from where I sit.

I "made it" doing a lot of custom work mixed with stock for over 25 years. Just not very well-because there is just not a lot of work out there in it that pays all that well. I'd really be surprised if two people working in a limited market doing one-offs could make over fifty k a year. That's the point I am trying to make-net, not gross. The op asked if there was enough demand to make it worthwhile-I contended that realistically-there is not, unless you can automate to take a lot of the grunt work and labor hours down. For instance-I can cut a set of falls for a flogger with a press and a clicker die in about thirty seconds. And do it perfectly. How long does it take you to cut those by hand? And how much MORE time would that free you up to do more fancy things you would rather be doing? In the past, it took me almost a full day to make a decent heartwood styled flogger. Max I could get for one was around 150 bucks, and materials were about thirty. Overhead was around thirty. That left me about 90 bucks for ten hours work. Does your day job pay better? MINE sure pays more than nine bucks an hour.

Although I am certain and most confident that Master Archer and Elegant can defend themselves, I must jump in here to say that the couple that you have so obviously slapped in the face, happen to be one of the most prominent couples on the national and international leather scene. They have spent years building their relationship, their business, and their skillsets, and they have been recognized for doing so by the greater leather community. They have been nominated for numerous Pantheon of Leather Awards among many others. Elegant in her own right is one of the most knowledgeable and most highly respected bootblacks in the world. You my friend Leatherist have absolutely picked the wrong family to attack. As to whether or not they can survive solely on the money they make from their leather business who cares? But I can say that they attend nearly every lifestyle event in their area along with many more outside their region, and have donated significant amounts of product to lifestyle organizations, raffles, events, runs, and fundraisers. How do you support your national community?

How do you support your national community? I didn't "attack" anyone, you people are making mountains of molehills. Why does a business HAVE to be a charity anyhow? Do you think the public scene is the entire market?

And yanno, I wasn't trying to slap Archer, I know they both make nice stuff. Nor will I get huffy over them getting huffy. I really really just do not like the politics in public scenes. It makes things distinctly un fun to get in the middle of people playing fantasy politics and popularity contests. I didn't like high school then, and I don't like it now. I'm not a scene kind of guy, and I will not be. You can guage my "reality" by the work you will see. I DO like kink and kink gear, and I have a definite passion for it. I do NOT like taking commitments for less than large amounts of money, and with an absolute certainty that I can get said projects done on time. Archer was correct, reputation is very important. So I'm generally not interesting in selling "vaporware". Gear that I do NOT have in stock, and that the numbers are not sure on. That's where most people screw up and get a bad rep. It's also where they go in the hole, and bankrupt. I have no plans to go there.

Ermm...when I answered this, I just answered the original question. I did not realize that there was a conflict in here. Anyway, I think everyone who has posted in this thread is an artist.
