pinksugarsub -> Hating on The History Channel (6/8/2008 12:10:59 PM)

Most tv just sucks IMO.  i was excited when my cable company added the History Channel to my channel line up.  i like history. i think it's interesting.

Then i start watching, and low and behold, the shows are about things like UFO's, the Apocalypse, theories about how the world will  end, etc.  WTF?

Occassionally this channel broadcasts s'thing i find interesting -- even historical in nature.  There was a great series of shows on the Roman Empire, for example.  This is the exception, though, rather than the rule.

So, i am hating on the History Channel.  Big disapointment.

They're not The History Channel anymore, they are simply History.

On March 20, 2008, The History Channel dropped the "The" and the "Channel" parts of its name to become History.

Raechard -> RE: Hating on The History Channel (6/8/2008 12:20:58 PM)

What annoys me sometimes about history programmes I watch is that they tend to repeat things over and over again. To try and fill the whole programme length they often go over what they have already told the audience as if the audience was some how incapable of grasping what they said the first time. History is fascinating stuff but for me only if it contains a bit of mystery. For example I'll watch a programme about the reasons why they think Stonehenge was constructed but not if it is only repeating what I already know about it. I love when they theorise as to why things were done in the past and they use logical arguments to back up their theories from artefacts they have discovered or other scientific processes they have conducted. That is the fascination for me, not the kind of history where we are sure how things occurred and it is just a lecture from an expert. I like to see the expert has questions about the past that they want answered too.

If there is some amazing channel that never runs garbage, please let me know what it is.  I have seen some very good programs, plenty of Modern Marvels when I just want to sit and vegetate for a while, and complete crap that sends my thumb right back to the button.  Pretty much like any other option on the dial.

Raechard, Yr in the UK.  You have the BBC!  Don't You have vastly superior tv content, compared to the US?

<Wonders if Canada has better tv content too.>

Sorry, faerytattoodgirl.   'NCIS' makes my skin crawl -- so does "CSI Miami'.  Generally i love crime shows.  i'm a devotee of all the 'Law and Order' series.  There's just s'thing about the writing on 'NCIS' that puts me off.

But i fully support your viewing choices!

i'd support your choices even if you watched reality tv shows.

That's how much i like you.

The BBC spends all it's budget on overpaid stars, Dr Who and a webpage that no one in the UK uses.[:D]

agreed. i watch a lot of natgeo now and even they have similar programing. discovery too. though i'm also big into the whole alternative history, 'supernatural' stuff to the point where i write papers on it periodically. i like watching how people handle the unexplained so i would rather watch that stuff than killing pablo for the 18th time.

Well, i have nothing to recommend.  Even TCM and NatGeo are very uneven in quality.

Maybe it's my cable company's fault.  Gawd knows that's an evil corporation.
